I grew up in a pretty conservative household where everything I watched or listened to had to be approved by my parents. I wasn’t even allowed to watch Harry Potter as a kid, which was a pretty big deal to miss out on as a child of the 90’s. The one exception to the rule was Aliens, which I watched for the first time at the age of eight. Why? Because my mom loved it and reasons. Given it was the only thing I could watch that wasn’t Disney or Nickelodeon, I latched onto Alien and Ali...

Aliens: Fireteam Elite has a lack of mission variety, technical issues, bad matchmaking, and a repetitive structure. All of that said, it's still a fun time. I’m off to play some more right now.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite could have been a much better game but its many bugs and glitches, and strange design decisions hold it back from shining.

To say that video game adaptations of the Alien franchise are hit and miss is a bit of an understatement. On the one hand, we have genre-defining classics like Alien vs Predator (1999) and Alien: Isolation. Then there's Aliens: Colonial Marines, a release besmirched by industry lies.

The Alien IP has had a mixed bag of representation in video games, with the terrifying Alien: Isolation as a high point, and the awful Aliens: Colonial Marines as a spectacular low point. The next dev team up to bat is Cold Iron Studios with Aliens: Fireteam Elite, a co-op third-person shooter that has the potential to deliver compelling horde gameplay enhanced by deeper-than-you’d-expect character class progression. Unfortunately, I was hoping for game over, man, long before the credits rolled.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite is an unapologetically loud action movie in video game form. It wants you to kill lots of things and it gives you plenty of tools to do so. While its special enemies are a bit of a letdown, the weapon sounds and overall pacing of combat encounters compensate for it. The structure of these encounters can get a bit formulaic and does gradually lose its charm the more you play through the same level, but intense battles and narrative surprises make for a fun first playthro...

The gameplay is almost exclusively shooting. Thankfully, it feels fantastic. Enemies can come from many locations and have a few types, including ones with ranged attacks, extra armor, and grappling abilities. While more enemy types with different abilities — such as being able to grab a marine and drag them away — would be nice, the hordes of xenomorphs were fun to blast. Though the lack of boss fights is a travesty. While objectives have different contexts, such as welding a door or overloading a power grid, it always amounts to you holding a button at a location. The path...

It’s trying its best with an obviously low budget but rather than replicating the tension and thrills of Aliens this has much more in common with one of its lacklustre sequels.

In 2008, Turtle Rock Studio’s Left 4 Dead was a massively successful co-op shooter, where players would fight through hordes of zombies while working their way through a series of campaign missions. The 2009 sequel is still one of the most played titles on Steam every day, as well as a handful of other notable success stories in the genre like Warhammer: Vermintide, Payday: The Heist and Deep Rock Galactic. But the genre itself never really took off as many also tried to replicate that succ...

Aliens: Fireteam Elite mostly delivers the goods with a super solid squad-based shooter set in the Aliens universe. There's plenty to enjoy here, lots of fun nods to the movies, tons of lore, impressive attention to environmental detail and slick Xeno-slaying action that's enhanced immensely by taking the fight to the alien hordes with a couple of friends. It may be a little repetitive, there aren't nearly enough surprises and the campaign fizzles out towards its end but, grab some buddies, get your headsets on and crank up the difficulty and there's hours of properly intense, team-based action to get...

While a few minor AI and presentational bugs hold it back from being the perfect organism fans have been hoping for, Aliens: Fireteam Elite absolutely nails that one last stand thrill of roleplaying a badass marine with your back against the wall battling overwhelmingly insurmountable odds. Let's rock? Aye-firmative.

The Alien franchise is full of hits and misses. The first two movies of the franchise? Hits. The third? Miss. The prequels and sequels since then have also been a mixed bag. And the video games based on the franchise follow suit. Aliens: Colonial Marines was some hot garbage, but that was followed up by Alien: Isolation which is considered one of the best games in the franchise. But how does Aliens: Fireteam Elite hold up?

When the campaigns are finished, players also unlock harder difficulties, a Horde Mode, and a new class, but those add-ons don't encourage repeat playthroughs. The problem with the Horde Mode, in particular, is that the entire game is one large Horde Mode. Besides some minor mechanic changes, the Horde Mode is nothing players won’t already have experienced in the campaign. That’s not a knock against Horde Modes, because they can often be fun, but there is nothing new or incentivizing to continue with it once credits roll in Aliens: Fireteam Elite.

All in all, Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a AAA experience in a AA package. The game is a blast to play and remains stalwartly faithful to the Alien franchise, even adding to its mythology. It's not going to blow players away with its visuals or overflowing wealth of content, but it will impress both Alien fans and co-op shooter players. At the moderate price of $40, Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a bargain for any player with even a drop of interest. They'll be sure to get more than their money's w...

The Aliens universe of video games routinely switches around between horror experiences and mindless action games, never quite striking a proper balance between the two. After Alien: Isolation took the series into the best iteration of horror Ridley Scott's universe has seen since the original trilogy. Now, it's time for the pendulum to shift in the opposite direction and let the Colonial Marines get their chance in the spotlight with a heavy action shooter. Built for squads of three, Aliens: Fireteam Elite shoots to prove whether xenomorphs are just as deadly in packs as they are hunting solo.

Aliens Fireteam Elite is a title that will likely disappoint you during the first few hours, but once you get past the first chapter, the game starts to open up to its potential more. If you have a squad ready for some challenging scenarios in a decent, albeit familiar, co-op shooter, then you could see yourself with an enjoyable couple of hours on your hands.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite does a lot right when it comes to the core gameplay experience, but lacks in its narrative. It adapts all the good parts of a looter shooter and a zombie-like shooter experience at the cost of some repetitive mission objectives.

Ultimately Aliens Fireteam Elite is a solid time-waster that offers very little reason to come back to it once the campaign is done. The combat and attention to detail with the license are the highlights for sure, but removed from the Alien license, there is little here I can recommend over other similar games. Hopefully Cold Iron gets another shot at this and can add some variety and give players that confrontation everyone will expect and truly make it something special.
