Arms’ clever take on boxing provides a simple premise with a startling amount of depth for those who would seek to master the stretching appendages. Its rapidly evolving lobby system had me sticking around for “just one more match.” There may not be a lot worth unlocking right now, but planned free updates may just give Arms some additional legs.

There’s a lot of personality on the surface in Arms (mainly I love that title theme song), and I hope Nintendo continues to build on it as planned. It works as a fighter, I just wish there was more to do in this debut entry — both pragmatically in terms of modes and on an emotional level, as I haven’t really connected with its universe yet despite its raw sense of style.

Although ARMS may not be perfect, it’s a really good time playing both online and locally with friends. Its single player offerings are underwhelming, and more story content to experience and the removal or refinement of the three bland mini-games would have pushed ARMS to near perfection.

ARMS is a clever game that brings something new to the simple boxing formula. Those seeking to master the game will find it harder than they initially thought, but will enjoy every frustrating fight they get into. With more free DLC on the way, including new characters, stages, and weapons, ARMS is shaping up to be a great new addition to the fighting game community. Final Score: 4/5 Disclosure: Our Nintendo Switch review copy of ARMS was provided courtesy of Nintendo.

A new fighting game being announced by Nintendo is a big deal. The company have played with many genres over the years, but aside from the convention-breaking Super Smash Bros., fighting games usually get the short end of the stick. That is, of course, until ARMS showed up on the scene. Announced along with the first wave of Switch titles, ARMS has since been a bit of an unknown quantity. On the one hand, footage of developers playing the game saw hints at high-level strategies and tactics. On the other hand, footage of people playing the game at events at...

ARMS staying power will depend on its ability to form a community around this punchy little title. Currently, Nintendo has plans to release additional stages and fighters for free. This DLC will help the title keep its legs underneath it while the Switch install base grows and the ARMS community grows with it. The early success of the Switch and the level of detail that Nintendo has crafted into ARMS assures that this is a great franchise with huge potential for growth that is fun for newcome...

My excitement for ARMS (the Nintendo Switch’s new fighter and answer to the Wii’s Punch-Out!) has been pretty high since I was fortunate enough to attend the Nintendo Switch reveal earlier this year here in Melbourne. Getting to spend approximately 10 minutes with the game that evening, I was not only impressed, but also left with a desire to play more. Well now that desire has been fully satisfied and I can happily say that ARMS has hit me with its best shot!

Your best mate? They deserve a slap. Your know-it-all in-laws? A swift uppercut to the chops. That tight-fisted clown you call a boss? All of the above.

ARMS is a shallow yet approachable experience that could have used just a bit more depth, detail, and personality.

Many Nintendo fans remember the Punch-Out franchise fondly. The rudimentary exploration of boxing's sweet science challenged players to find the best strategy against each opponent and capitalize upon weaknesses to rise up the ranks and eventually claim the championship. Arms explores similar mechanics while pushing the concept far into the realm of the absurd in a way that is exciting, challenging, and fun.

In ARMS, players will find the same texture of game design that has made Mario Kart and Smash Bros. so beloved and enduring worldwide. For a brand new multiplayer game, there can be no higher praise than that.

ARMS is a great addition to the Switch's growing library of unique titles. Featuring a fresh new world full of color and character, the content might be light, but if you get hooked you'll find lots to enjoy here.

One of the most enjoyable and original fighting games of recent years, that fully justifies its use of motion controls – and it’s only set to get better in the future.

In order to conduct this symphony of fisticuffs, Nintendo opted to go off the beaten path and establish a brand new way of play. In that sense, ARMS is a success that will rope players in for hours through its multiplayer and online modes, but will only garner interest from solo consumers for a short amount of time. At its core, ARMS isn't a flawless technical fighting game, but that's never what Nintendo wanted it to be. It's accessible without feeling primitive, and the layers of depth that are present are easy for fight aficionados to get lost in.

Arms sessions are quick, fun, and satisfying. With easy-to-pick-up mechanics, solid stage design, and quirky characters, Arms genuinely feels like a fun and different addition to the fighting game genre. More than that, it feels like just the kind of game that makes the Nintendo Switch itself feel fun and different.

Bringing motion controls back with a bang, ARMS can feel surprisingly retro, yet it also fits in perfectly with Nintendo’s modern twist on gaming and the Switch. ARMS exhibits Nintendo’s flair for game design to its fullest, confidently taking a well-known genre and injecting it with colour and character to craft something that’s inimitably their own.
