Astro Bot is an easy pick for one of the year's best, if not the PS5’s as a whole. The first fully-spec’d adventure might not move the needle forward for 3D platformers, but it's a triumphant effort from Team Asobi that stands toe-to-toe with some of the best in the genre. It's full of joy and surprise, and presented with an astonishing level of detail and tactility and packed to the rafters with reverence for PlayStation history.

ASTRO Bot is a platforming masterpiece that encourages exploration of not only its own worlds and planets, but also those of Sony’s long gone franchises as well. A celebration of Sony’s 30 years in gaming with a joyful flare you’d expect to see from its console rival. Team ASOBI has created yet another wonderful adventure that places ASTRO front and center as Sony’s mascot.

Astro Bot is a massive love letter to the 30-year history of PlayStation. With creative and charming ideas, the game is a blast to experience, with many cameos that left me astonished. The technical aspects of the title, such as its DualSense and physics implementations, sit at the top of the market. While there are some underutilized abilities and features, Astro Bot is a great time. This is exactly the type of game PlayStation needs more of: a focused adventure that never wavers from its mi...

Have you ever felt nostalgic for something you did not grow up with? Ever heard an older song for the first time in your 30s, with it almost feeling like part of your childhood? I think this has just happened with me after playing (and completing) Astro Bot. I have played both previous iterations of the adorable franchise made by Team Asobi in the past, but even though I loved playing them, the brand new Astro Bot game was something else. Not only was it a fantastic game, possibly THE best ga...

Astro Bot is a breath of fresh air from PlayStation’s first parties, as it truly encapsulates that old-school feeling, where Sony didn’t have the same formulaic game and took chances on other genres. Team Asobi knocked it out of the park with a game that is just tremendously fun to play.

From PlayStation references to charming interactions with other Bots, there’s a treat on every level. It’s wild to think that Sony finally has a platformer that rivals the excellent 3D Super Mario Games, but Team Asobi really did it. Don’t miss out on one of the best platforming experiences in gaming history with Astro Bot.

There are games that remind us why we fell in love with video games in the first place. In my opinion, Astro Bot is one of those games. It’s a phenomenally polished title, featuring great audiovisuals and, above all, brilliant gameplay that never gets boring. It's also a family-friendly game, perfect for everyone to enjoy together.

Think PlayStation in 2024 and your mind probably goes to Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War – those eye-wateringly big-budget epics that define the firm’s modern era. But once upon a time PlayStation was synonymous with the mascot platformer: Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot and Sly Cooper, to name just a few. In Astro Bot, PlayStation appears to have finally found a new mascot.

An excellent 3D platformer, with the best force feedback ever seen (or rather felt) in a video game, even if it’s a curiously flawed celebration of 30 years of PlayStation.

Whether it’s the visuals, gameplay, or soundtrack, Astro Bot picks up the best pieces of PlayStation’s most memorable franchises and mashes them all together in the most endearing way possible, all while effortlessly balancing its own identity through its innovative platforming set-pieces.

It feels like it’s so long between when we get a truly breathtaking 3D platformer these days, and yet 2024 feels like a breakout year for them. I liked Penny’s Big Breakaway a lot, but I feel like Astro Bot is top-to-bottom perfect for what it is. This is, without a doubt, the game I would tell a family to get if they’re getting a PS5 and want something that everyone can enjoy. It’s the kind of game I not only suspect, but implore Sony to package with the console from here on out. Astro Bot is a charming and cheeky nod to a lot of PlayStation history and a powerful demonstration of PS5 hardware, but more than anything, it's just a ridiculously good game.

Platformers have so long followed in the footsteps of Mario, with so many titles trying to emulate what the mustachioed plumber has achieved. Astro Bot’s utterly overflowing creativity and ingenuity make it one of the first platformers that feels like it can stand outside the long shadow cast by Mario. It’s a grand celebration of PlayStation’s legacy and a sign of what its future can become.

And yet after 15 or so hours doing damn near everything there is to do in it, I have been left feeling somewhat hollow. Melancholic for times I wasn’t even alive for. There are games mentioned in Astro Bot you cannot play on a modern system. They are stranded on consoles with slowly dying batteries and waiting to be delisted from storefronts you can only purchase things from by using arcane magic. Games that are doomed to never get sequels, not to mind remakes or remasters. All because Sony has decided yet another game cribbing from Overwatch, Tarkov, Genshin, or Fornite that costs 500 million dollars and eight years to make might be the next big thing.

Team Asobi cements itself as an essential PlayStation studio with an imaginative platformer for the ages.

September 5, 2024 Read Review

Thematically, Team Asobi revels in the freedom of the traditional platform game: not having to stick to a theme at all. Astro Bot’s levels are a restless parade of “what if [blank], but robots?” where the blanks are filled in by turtle temples, funky trees, construction sites, or the inside of a giant worm. In the Spooky Time level, Astro pauses time to navigate a haunted house. In Free Big Brother, Astro unshackles an Iron Giant-sized bot and clambers up his limbs. Everything is made out of the same smooth, machined plastic and metal as a PlayStation device, even the rabbits, trees, and penguins; just like in the Mushroom Kingdom, everything has eyes, but in this world, they’re blinking blue LEDs. The robot theme lends a sweet logic to the rampant anthropomorphization, bloodless violence, and surreal non sequiturs of platform games. It’s like an automaton universe, a scrambled simulacrum of random concepts (and PlayStation games) assembled by some loopy machine civilization.Sony has been reaching for something like Astro Bot since the PlayStation launched 30 years ago in the age of Mario and Sonic. It has cycled through mascots like Crash, Jak, and Sackboy in its quest for a breezy family game that could hold its own with Nintendo’s best as well as mesh with Sony’s cooler, tech-centric brand. Sony ended up settling for edgier cinematic action heroes instead, but deep in the consoles’ soul, it felt like something was missing. Astro Bot — a dazzling, joyful game — is a celebration of all the failed attempts and quizzical detours Sony made on that quest. And it might also be the game to fill that hole at last.

Team ASOBI has yet again cracked the code of delivering an experience that's fun, rewarding and nostalgic all at the same time. With nostalgic callbacks, vibrant worlds and welcoming gameplay, there's truly something for everyone in Astro Bot. It's a bite-sized adventure that packs a punch of color and charm that satisfies fans of old and new. While enemies and themes could have used more variety, Astro Bot is a sure-fire Game of the Year contender and poised to be one of PlayStation 5's signature titles that's well deserving of said namesake.

It's a fun, easy-going romp through PlayStation history, and absolutely impossible to play without a smile plastered to your face.

After the real credits begin to roll after Astro Bot's incredible final battle - which itself feels like the PlayStation version of the Super Smash Bros. credits mini-game built into a multi-section boss fight in the absolute best way - players can re-explore every level to find anything they may have missed. One of the many clever design decisions allows players to spend 200 coins at the beginning of completed stages to spawn a helpful bird bot that will signal when players are close to a secret they missed, which helps further reduce the amount of playtime required, even if ultimately I'd rather have spent another 10 hours with the game if possible.

It really feels like the developers thought of everything, and thanks to their efforts, Astro Bot is pure joy in video game form. I went into it with high expectations thanks to Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Astro's Playroom, and it not only met my expectations, but completely exceeded them. It's the best 3D platformer since Super Mario Odyssey hit the scene in 2017 and will be remembered as an all-time classic of the genre. Everyone with a PS5 should get their hands on this game ASAP, and hopefully, Team Asobi gets to continue making masterpieces.
