The only downside to Reimagined is how much hand-holding it has. It feels like the game is trying not to scare off new players, making sure every point lands no matter what, but there are times when it's all too much. Most players will get the tutorials quickly, but Reimagined keeps explaining anyway, and it starts to feel never-ending.

Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined is easily recommended for JRPG fans, though everyone else may want to approach with caution. The drawn-out storyline keeps you playing but doesn't quite convince you of the game's greatness, which could be a turnoff for gamers who aren't happy grinding their way through side stories.

Another swing and a hit from Square Enix and the Dragon Quest franchise. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined streamlines the entire experience and provides plenty of quality-of-life updates that I wish every studio would implement into their games. The visuals and sound design are once again in the higher echelon, and game's combat is still just as enjoyable as Dragon Quest combat always is.

A gorgeous remake of a classic JRPG that many players missed out on, this version of Dragon Quest VII swings hard towards accessibility (and might actually overshoot the mark a little bit). Visually gorgeous, with a fun episodic structure, this is a great way for fans to revisit this story or encounter it for the first time. My only caveat is a warning to be very careful with the "Quality of Life" settings, which make it entirely too easy to break the game, removing all of the challenge (and therefore all of the fun).

A slow burn reverent reconstruction, where lost worlds, deliberate design, and timeless role playing values prove that patience is still the most powerful mechanic of all.

Whether it will bring on those who couldn't get through the original or not, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a finely honed role-playing game and a fitting retake on a divisive classic.

Let's start with the good. Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined looks fantastic. From the diorama-like environments to the doll-like designs of its characters, everything gels well. With apologies to the improvements and changes in the HD-2D remakes, this kind of art style is much more my cup of tea. Reimainged feels more like the PS1 version of DQ7, which always had a wistful and sometimes melancholic atmosphere, something missing somewhat with the vibrancy of the 3DS remake.

Ardent fans of the original might be skeptical, but it’s hard to imagine fans of classic JRPGs not enjoying this thoroughly engaging journey.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is still as grand an adventure as it was 25 years ago, mostly.
