The only downside to Reimagined is how much hand-holding it has. It feels like the game is trying not to scare off new players, making sure every point lands no matter what, but there are times when it's all too much. Most players will get the tutorials quickly, but Reimagined keeps explaining anyway, and it starts to feel never-ending.
Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined is easily recommended for JRPG fans, though everyone else may want to approach with caution. The drawn-out storyline keeps you playing but doesn't quite convince you of the game's greatness, which could be a turnoff for gamers who aren't happy grinding their way through side stories.
Another swing and a hit from Square Enix and the Dragon Quest franchise. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined streamlines the entire experience and provides plenty of quality-of-life updates that I wish every studio would implement into their games. The visuals and sound design are once again in the higher echelon, and game's combat is still just as enjoyable as Dragon Quest combat always is.
A gorgeous remake of a classic JRPG that many players missed out on, this version of Dragon Quest VII swings hard towards accessibility (and might actually overshoot the mark a little bit). Visually gorgeous, with a fun episodic structure, this is a great way for fans to revisit this story or encounter it for the first time. My only caveat is a warning to be very careful with the "Quality of Life" settings, which make it entirely too easy to break the game, removing all of the challenge (and therefore all of the fun).
A slow burn reverent reconstruction, where lost worlds, deliberate design, and timeless role playing values prove that patience is still the most powerful mechanic of all.
Whether it will bring on those who couldn't get through the original or not, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a finely honed role-playing game and a fitting retake on a divisive classic.
Let's start with the good. Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined looks fantastic. From the diorama-like environments to the doll-like designs of its characters, everything gels well. With apologies to the improvements and changes in the HD-2D remakes, this kind of art style is much more my cup of tea. Reimainged feels more like the PS1 version of DQ7, which always had a wistful and sometimes melancholic atmosphere, something missing somewhat with the vibrancy of the 3DS remake.
A beloved RPG franchise returns with Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. Does the new streamlined package of updated visuals, straightforward storytelling, and snappy combat live up to its storied roots to deliver a complete and heartfelt package?
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined succeeds at streamlining a lengthy adventure at the expense of player discovery and friction, leading to a version that feels like Diet Dragon Quest VII.
With both the original PlayStation version and the 3DS remake of Dragon Quest VII largely inaccessible due to outdated hardware and digital storefront closures, the timing of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined couldn’t be any better. This second remake of the classic Japanese RPG game has been streamlined to be an approachable experience. While its new art direction and mechanics make gameplay more engaging than ever before, the lack of challenge may put off veteran players. Dragon Quest VII Reima...
Remember that sense of adventure you had as a child, eager to explore the world around you? Imagine how much brighter that would burn if your island was the only one in existence. Your father, a renowned sailor, has sailed the seas and found nothing but pilchards as far as the eye can see.
Dragon Quest VII is over 25 years old. In fact, it has already been remade once before, for the 3DS. For this second remake, everything has been rebuilt from the ground up with modern sensibilities in mind.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a comfy blanket of JRPG nostalgia, and despite having some pacing issues I never wanted it to end.
Dragon Quest VII is a game about discovery and learning from the past. It makes sense that the first real 3D remake of a Dragon Quest game is Dragon Quest VII. But what did Square-Enix learn, and was it enough to sell a remake of a game that already has one?
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a Dragon Quest that is not only full of whimsy but also has a lot of heart. It fixes a lot of the issues of the original game and adds more substance to love from this world.

DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined uses modern visual and gameplay improvements to breathe new life into a classic game. It is a prime example of how to approach a remake, and there is so much to enjoy for both new and old Dragon Quest players.
You could tell me Dragon Quest VII Reimagined was an entirely new game released for the first time in 2026 and I’d believe you. At the same time it stays undeniably true to the original, with still enough tweaks to feel more approachable than many other RPGs.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined flawlessly combines the old-school feel of this game, but revamps many of its systems to make it one of the most accessible entries in the whole series.
As a long-time fan of Dragon Quest, I've been spoiled these last couple of years with remakes of the classic games and here we have a remake that goes even further with DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined.
From its art style to its streamlined mechanics, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined takes a classic and makes it feel fresh. A cast of engaging characters, sparkling voice work, and combat that can be tailor-made, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a substantial game that almost never wastes your time. Ardent fans of the original might be skeptical, but it’s hard to imagine fans of classic JRPGs not enjoying this thoroughly engaging journey.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is still as grand an adventure as it was 25 years ago, mostly. The 'Reimagined' moniker bleeds down to the refined art style, remixed combat mechanics, and streamlined main quest. All of these, plus ample amounts of Quality of Life updates, make for a fun and modern experience that stands tall even next to recent installments. However, all of the bells and whistles look a lot less shiny when you realize that they came at a cost, with content being cut. Dragon Quest...
Another home run for the series, fans of old-school JRPGs will absolutely love Dragon Quest VII Reimagined.
Square Enix took a risk with Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. After the success of their HD-2D remakes for Dragon Quest I through III, they could have played it safe with the same formula. Instead, they chose to reimagine one of the series’ longest and most challenging entries from the ground up. Our review of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will examine how the remake handles the modernization of a notoriously slow-paced classic, looking at its new visual style, gameplay changes, and whether it ma...
DQ7 Reimagined takes all the things that worked in the original release and turns them into a fantastic package
Ultimately, what matters in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is the journey. Every character you meet, every party member you recruit, has a tale you want to experience. With reworked combat and vocations, a stellar party, and dozens of memorable locations in need of help, Reimagined is one of the finest games in the series.
