For the most part the gameplay of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is great fun. The combat has some camera and character problems but is otherwise enjoyable and nicely strategic, and the action strategy overworld moments are a highlight. I’m not so sure about the exploration, side quests, Chocobo breeding, etc, especially with the tiny areas and many loading screens, but it’s mostly optional stuff barring the loading screens. The trouble is though, the gameplay is not the major part of the game. ...

: Final Fantasy Type-0 HD marries a strong story with compelling themes and a great cast with some excellent game systems, resulting in one of the most cohesive and best games in the series in recent memory. There’s still some evidence of the game’s portable origins, but Type-0 remains a strong and engaging game even with these problems. Fans of the Final Fantasy series owe it to themselves to check it out.
Patience pays off, as Final Fantasy Type-0 is finally available in English. Whether it was worth the wait or not depends on what you enjoy about RPGs and how much you're addicted to the Final Fantasy XV demo.
A lot of this game's PSP heritage appears to be on display. While the characters appear to look fine for an HD remaster, many of the environments and menus look awkward and even blurry. The gameplay has several moments of frustration, especially with AI not always knowing when to heal you. This would normally be alleviated by grabbing a partner for co-op, but that aspect of the game was stripped away for the HD remaster for reasons that leave me scratching my head.
Overall, Final Fantasy Type-0 proves to be an enthralling game with extensive hours of gameplay that challenges players to strengthen their parties and defend their homeland. With features such as the ability to customize a player’s dream team and play as summoned monsters, Square Enix’s RPG remains true to its name to keep players entertained with its compelling story. Once you get past the long introduction and dry voice acting, it’s a great game to play on all difficulties until Heavensward and Final Fantasy XV hit the shelves.
Final Fantasy Type-0 is the action packed Final Fantasy game that a lot of fans have been waiting for. The frantic and fluid combat system, coupled with intricate customizing option, is an RPG fans dream. While the story is does offer some heartwarming moments it’s still tough to fully immerse yourself in. Once you start playing you’ll easily lose yourself in the world of Orience, it’s that good.
Though fixated on death, this spin-off bodes well for Final Fantasy's future liveliness.
The combat has it’s moments but it has very little to do with Final Fantasy, although the awful storytelling is all too familiar from the rest of the Final Fantasy XIII series.
Final Fantasy: Type-0 HD might not be to everyone's tastes, but the game's combat is mostly enjoyable and there's plenty to explore and discover. The story might be convoluted, but it's engaging and the characters are (mostly) likeable. Final Fantasy: Type-0 HD is good fun, and well worth delving into for a few dozen hours.
Offering the most captivating gameplay from the series in a long time, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD has finally arrived to the West while looking and sounding better than ever.
Type-0’s gritty tone, fast-paced action, and strategic approach to time management is a welcome change of pace from the usual Final Fantasy experience. Though an exasperating camera and clunky mission controls sometimes dampened my fun, I enjoyed meeting the Class Zero cadets and guiding them through battle. There’s definitely no other class quite like them. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Meghan Sullivan is IGN's database master and a huge JRPG fan. Follow her on Twitter.

While not the next-generation Final Fantasy game fans are anxiously waiting for, Type-0 is a fun action/adventure with a lot of compelling ideas. There's enough variety in the gameplay to keep the combat fresh for dozens of hours, and the story is surprisingly emotional for a political thriller. Sadly, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is held back by its handheld roots, but don't let that keep you from discovering this oddity.
Not so long ago, few game releases could get me as excited as a new Final Fantasy. After numerous offshoots, spin-offs, and mobile ports, I’m more tempered in my expectations. I came to Type-0 with an eagerness to rediscover my love of the franchise, but concerned about whether this new game could keep pace with other modern role-playing successes. Type-0 has dozens of hours of content with which to stay busy. Unfortunately, the combat at the core of the game is mediocre, and the story is barely comprehensible.
The combat is fun, and makes the game fun to play which is the most important part of a game at the end of the day. The variety of the characters in combat is fantastic and thinking about it makes me sad that you only control one character in the upcoming Final Fantasy XV.
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is a pleasant surprise, and after playing it, I can see why so many people were clamoring for a western release. Although it doesn’t necessarily justify the HD treatment at every turn, the core game is worth playing whether you’re a fan of the franchise, or just enjoy challenging tactical action. If Square keeps highlighting and pushing quality experiences like this, it will prove to more people it hasn’t lost its touch.
