It Takes Two is a moreish co-op platformer full of engaging toybox puzzles and inventive boss battles. Emerging into a new area is a joy, environments carefully dressed with adorable bric-a-brac that is in equal parts precious and perilous. Yet despite strong writing in the story, its finale is too formulaic to leave a lasting impression even if the heartfelt vocal performances help get it over the line.

Is Switch the best place to play It Takes Two? Probably not: it’s a beautiful game which truly deserves the power of a high-end PC or next-gen console to really shine. But that doesn’t mean that this isn’t a worthy port. If Switch is your only gaming format, or even if you simply want to enjoy it again, this time handheld, you’re going to be in for a treat.

It Takes Two is a fantastic co-op game, and feels right at home on Switch. Sadly the visuals take a big hit, but in return you get a few more options on how to play. It still remains difficult to get a co-op partner for the full game let alone enough controllers, however if you can manage you’re in for a great time.

On Nintendo Switch, It Takes Two supports Couch Co-op (with two Joy-cons), Local Wireless Play, and Online Co-op. Players who own It Takes Two are able to send a "Friend's Pass" to another player, which allows them to play alongside it for free. The game's graphics are noticeably lackluster on the Switch, with the visuals of It Takes Two's wondrous, mishmashed world paling in comparison to those in the game's other platforms. However, the game transitions onto Switch relatively well in spite of this. After adjusting to the Switch's controls and limited graphics, this version of the game is not...

“It Takes Two is a charming co-op adventure that combines the best ideas from Nintendo and Pixar.”

It Takes Two is an absolute delight. The consistently creative gameplay is on par with, if not better than any co-op experience available on Xbox today, and if you have a partner in mind to play it with (don't forget they can access a free "Friend's Pass" if playing online), we think you'll have a real blast with it. We had such a great time playing through its highly memorable adventure, and you know what? We feel like the constant laughter, enjoyment and need for collaborative teamwork even reinvigorated our real life relationship a little bit. That's how good this...

As a video game reviewer, it's very rare I've ever awarded a perfect score. The last two games I awarded with that score were The Witcher 3 and God of War. I say this just to emphasize how It Takes Two really is, in my view, the perfect co-op experience. At least, it's the closest to perfection that I've had the joy to experience to date.
Read Full ReviewIn this crazy Game Pass driven world, while It Takes Two may not be available on the service (at release anyway), it is well worth paying full price for. The novel approach of allowing a friend to download a ‘friend’s pass’ meaning that only one of you has to actually buy the game makes it half price anyway. In terms of replayability, at the very least you can play the whole thing again as the other character which equates to thirty hours gameplay not including the mini games.

It Takes Two has you play Cody and May, husband and wife not on the greatest of terms. Rose, their daughter, has made charming, totally not voodoo dolls of them, and has them get along in her narrative, or so she tries. The real world does call unfortunately for her, when they announce a divorce. Her tears and her wish to see her parents reconcile seems to have given life to the dolls, with Cody and May now forced to navigate a world much larger than them as they bicker their way through chal...

One of my complaints with the video game industry is that there aren’t many couch co-op games anymore. Yes, I know that the majority of them offer some sort of an online multiplayer experience, but it’s not the same. Personally, I love the option of being able to sit next to my husband or friend on a comfy couch and enjoy going through the experience together. This is one of the reasons why I enjoy the Gears of War franchise so much. Thankfully, we have visionary Josef Fares to help fill ...

Think back to a few years ago. Long, solitary adventures once stood stoically across from competitive multiplayer games, with a no man’s land of mostly empty space between them. That void was co-op gaming. The resurgence of couch co-op games since then has been intense, though most efforts have felt tacked on. Games that truly succeed are those that embrace cooperation as a core design component, and that’s exactly what Josef Fares and Hazelight Studios have cut their teeth on. It Takes Two is their most refined effort yet, sporting Pixar caliber polish and a shockingly dynamic set of gameplay...

It Takes Two is a remarkable puzzle-platformer that constantly surprises and delights, as long as you've got a co-op partner.

And at the end of the day, that is what stands out in It Takes Two. It’s fun. The game is effortlessly fun. While the marriage of gameplay and story wasn’t what I had hoped – I wasn’t ever really invested in May and Cody’s relationship – I was constantly having fun playing it. And for me, that is what matters most. Highly recommended.

It Takes Two is the culmination of a decade of novel co op gaming ideas, and that makes it one of 2021's best games no matter what else comes out.

It Takes Two is thus far one of the year's best platformers, best overall games, and can likely stake a claim as one of the best co-op games ever created. It merges a grand platforming adventure with sublime co-op play through a blend of perfectly-crafted challenges and jaw-dropping levels and setpieces that you need to share with someone close to you. It's a triumph in almost every area, with such a wide range of expertly-executed ideas and gameplay concepts that it deserves to be called a true passion project in almost every sense of the word. You need to experience...

Coming from the brilliant and sometimes bizarre mind of Josef Fares and his talented team at Hazelight Studios is the whimsical cooperative adventure, It Takes Two. The game propels its players into a magical and heartfelt world of ever-changing environments and gameplay mechanics. The game also continues Hazelight’s trend of creating mandatory cooperative experiences, with 2018’s A Way Out proving the formula can absolutely work. It Takes Two doesn’t just embrace that formula however, ...

You know that existential crisis that sometimes accompanies playing a new game you’ve been looking forward to, where you feel like you should be enjoying yourself more than you actually are? When you remember what it was like to play games as a kid, when you could get lost in a world of 16-bit pixels and feel like you were actually a part of its levels, and how that part of you has been missing ever since you became an adult? It Takes Two may ostensibly be a game for grown-up couples, but it recaptures that childhood magic better than...

Playing It Takes Two took me back to the era of couch co-op games that I would play with my friends and family. The shared laughs, frustrations, and triumphs are an aspect of co-op games that I had sorely missed. With inventive and creative gameplay puzzles coupled with some unique environments, It Takes Two is without a doubt the greatest couch co-op game I’ve played in recent memory.

It Takes Two is co-op gaming genius and is going to go down as both a classic of the genre and a Game of the Year contender. There's not a single dull moment in the entire game, and we didn't run into any glitches or technical issues of any kind either. It Takes Two is polished to near-perfection, and an absolute must-play for co-op gaming fans.

Hazelight Studios founder Josef Fares certainly doesn’t lack ambition. His last game, A Way Out, was an innovative and affecting co-op crime drama built on an indie budget, and his latest project, It Takes Two, pushes things even harder. In Fares’ own always-colorful words, his new puzzle-platformer-shooter-dungeon-hack-flight-sim-rom-com (to mention just a few of the genres it dabbles in) is “f--king nuts,” and I’m inclined to agree. This may legitimately be the most wildly varied video game ever made.

It Takes Two's refreshing gameplay loop and heavy focus on cooperation and timing results in some of the most satisfying puzzling, platforming, and combat I've seen in a very long time.

I don’t know that I could have fully appreciated It Takes Two 10 years ago. 10 years of marriage and all of the ups, downs, and in betweens that come with it. 10 years of learning and understanding the ever shifting dynamics of a relationship and the simple act of growing older. 10 years of memories and changing priorities and balancing each other’s independence with reliance on one another. It Takes Two is an exceptional co-op platformer, with no shortage of fascinating set pieces, but it’s the story that speaks to the gameplay; and some moments that get all too...

It Takes Two is a great rom-com romp filled with action, oodles of variety, and more than a few twists and turns. No, you won't like Cody and May for much of the game, and some segments do feel a touch drawn out, but grab the right co-op buddy and this is a hoot.

It Takes Two is a spectacular co-op adventure that lays down a path of great gameplay ideas and uses it to play a giddy game of hopscotch. It’s beautiful, breakneck-paced, and bubbling over with creativity, and playfulness and experimentation are rewarded at every turn. If you have any kind of co-op partner in your life, be they spouse, friend, sibling, or other (even a child, though the themes might be too mature for them), It Takes Two is a truly joyful trip you really need to take together.
