Redfall tries to bite far more than it can chew and delivers a package with a middling presentation, a lack of interesting mechanics, and some pretty woeful performance.

“Redfall makes concessions to work as a middling multiplayer game at the expense of a promising single-player experience.”

One can argue that Bethesda has been one of the best publishers in 2023, when you consider the vast majority of its releases. Hi-Fi Rush is easily one of the best games of the year, as well as its biggest surprise. The remaster of Quake II is one of the best ever made. Their latest Elder Scrolls Online expanson, Necrom, was equally exciting. Finally, even though it was plagued by inconveniences, I really enjoyed Starfield. But they just HAD to drop a massive piece of crap alongside all of tho...

Redfall is my biggest disappointment of 2023. As a massive fan of developer Arkane Studios’ previous work, from Dishonored through Deathloop, my expectations were high for the company’s new release. However, this vampire-hunting first-person shooter is messy, plagued with technical flaws and head-scratching design decisions counterintuitive to the game itself. The result is an often-bland experience, made frustrating by occasional glimpses of potential, and it’s sucked the life out of me.

After more than 20 hours with Arkane Austin's latest Redfall, Bradford came away incredibly frustrated and disappointed. From its earliest moments, Redfall fell flat. With the uninspired world building to the lackluster gunplay and brain-dead enemies, almost every aspect of Redfall was a miss.

I really spent most of my time playing Redfall thinking about what else Redfall could have been. I like that Arkane tried something new, and I’m bummed it came out like this. It’s a really unique premise and concept in its first bite, but its fangs don’t leave a lasting mark.

Xbox was looking so rosy for 2023. Hi-Fi Rush surprise released at the start of the year alongside a seemingly confident Developer Direct stream, suggesting the drought of first-party Microsoft titles was coming to an end and finally its Xbox Game Pass service could be onto some big hitters. That’s certainly what Redfall was shaping up to be, anyway.

The town of Redfall is under siege by a legion of vampires who have cut the island off from the outside world. Trapped with a handful of survivors, slay alone or squad up in open-world FPS action. Reviewed on PC.

On its own, Redfall isn’t a terrible game, and if you’re playing it through Game Pass, you might be able to squeeze out some fun when playing with friends, especially if you find glitches funny. If you paid full price for the game, then its flaws will be more noticeable, as it’s nowhere worth the cost. Maybe it will be more enjoyable to play in a year’s time, when the issues are fixed and some very basic features are implemented, but it’s hard to imagine anyone caring at that point.

Redfall never manages to be anything more than fine. My time playing through its single-player campaign rarely wowed me once the skillful crafting of the world itself wore off.

A lifeless multiplayer FPS that lacks any of Arkane's usual brilliance.

Redfall is an unfinished mess of a game, full of half-baked systems and terrible AI, only partially redeemed by its well-designed world.

Redfall is a fantastic idea that just doesn't pan out. Clunky combat, horrible AI, and boring gameplay make this one an easy pass.

Unlike Dishonored's more linear approach to storytelling, Redfall is an open-world game with two maps, loads of side quests, and various story missions to complete. Beating-specific missions are required to progress the game's overarching plot, but at this time, all players level up and keep the weapons they find during cooperative play, while only the host is able to progress in the game's story. There are different story mission paths, but each leads to the same conclusion, and choosing one instead of the other doesn't affect the world or its characters. This helps multiple playthroughs with different Redfall classes feel...

Redfall is ultimately a fun experience thanks to the world, the enemies, and the gunplay itself, but as a whole, it's an incredibly shallow one too. Because of this, some may question whether it's worth the price tag, but it's noteworthy that Redfall is launching on Xbox Game Pass. It feels like the game is designed for the service, with an experience that is easily digestible, is full of simple mindless fun, and is easy to move on from.

Redfall is fantastic in most ways.  A few baffling design decisions around its co-op implementation and some frustrating technical issues hold it back.  It is fun as hell solo, and ridiculously so in co-op.  With a little post-launch support it is going to become something special.  This may end up being Arkane’s worst-reviewed title ever, but it is going to be their most successful.  Alone or with friends Redfall is a game any fan of the genre should play.

After some updates, Redfall may well become a Game Pass must-play, whether you like to play alone or with others. But right now, while you can have fun with it if you grit your teeth and give it some leeway, it’s very hard to wholeheartedly recommend. While some issues here are likely to persist even once the title has been polished up a little, such as the world feeling too empty at times and skill trees being underwhelming, it’s the technical problems that are the stake to Redfall‘s heart.

Redfall feels like a cluttered and unfocused experience that doesn't compare to the studio's previous endeavors. Arkane's feeble attempt at fusing two genres robs Redfall of everything that made its previous games special. There's no saving Redfall from its bloody fate.

From a studio having delivered far better and should in all likelihood have done so once more, Redfall is an uncharacteristically poor and cobbled-together brand of tedium. Though pockets of the developer's signature traits remain when it comes to exploration, level design and reading up on the world of this fictional small-town settlement, it's as far as the game goes in injecting a sense of care or thought to what it's offering and asking of its player. Shamelessly limping from one half-hearted implementation and excuse to pad out its run-time to the next. The killing blow undoubtedly coming by way...

Redfall sees Arkane experiment with melding genres, to mixed results. There's plenty of flashes of the style and narrative flair we've come to expect from this incredible studio as you explore the town and face off with its undead inhabitants. However, the mixing of FPS action and story beats with open world exploration and a relatively relaxed pace leads to a balancing act that may leave hardcore shooter aficionados and Arkane super fans alike wanting more. If you come at it looking for a chilled out bit of vampire hunting there's still plenty to enjoy here, but some irksome AI...

Dishonored’s magic is spread thin across a co-op open world where compromise is everywhere

The latest offering from Arkane Austin, known previously for the Prey reboot, has arrived in the form of Redfall. This open-world, cooperative FPS puts you in control of one of four characters as they fight back against a vampire uprising that has plunged the town of Redfall into a blood-stained and cult-worshiping hellscape. After checking out the game in a limited preview capacity, it was safe to say Redfall topped our anticipation list with its renowned development team and super promising...

Redfall’s a great title with lots to do throughout its world, but the lifelessness of the NPCs and story alongside the amounts of bugs and the steep entering fee, I can’t assume it’ll be for everyone.

I do think that while the skill tree is a bit thinner in a single-player context than Arkane fans are used to, it’s designed to shine in co-op play. The translocator, for instance, isn’t just something you use once, but effectively creates a portal between where you threw it from and to, meaning that while it’s there your allies can use it too. Dev’s electric pulse spear, meanwhile, which zaps enemies in an area around it, can double up as a healing beacon with the right abilities. Once you start synergising those skills with other players, I imagine Redfall will...

Not even awesome vampires and world design can redeem Redfall's repetitive gameplay, which becomes progressively more monotonous the longer you play.

Redfall is Arkane's most underwhelming game to date. A fascinating setting and some remnants of the developer's beloved gameplay formula aren't enough to overcome the game's numerous issues, from stiff controls and disappointingly rote design choices to lackluster storytelling and technical deficiencies.

Considering they’re a staple of horror and fantasy, vampires have been the subject of relatively few great video games. Sure, there’s Castlevania, and Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Legacy of Kain, and a few others. But compared to zombie-themed games, for example, vampires are lagging way behind. Is Redfall a chance to sink your pointy teeth into something great, or should you seek a fun transfusion elsewhere?

For all its shortcomings, Redfall isn’t a bad game; It’s a bit dated but entirely not bad. The PC version suffers from several technical issues that affect the game’s performance, and the multiplayer mode has shown to be a pain to get started. Once things get going, it’s enjoyable, if not repetitive. Sadly, this being a 1st party Xbox title, I feel people will judge it based on its technical issues without giving it a chance. I’m not saying overlook the issues, but at least try it. Thankfully, the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass, so people try...

Redfall feels like a victim of the great, Game Pass machine. A game with heaps of style and potential that ultimately falls short in core areas like story, mission variety and technical performance. I can't help shake the feeling development may have been rushed in order to fill a gap in the subscription service's exclusives release schedule. It's fun in parts and its wider potential occasionally manages to shine through, but it ultimately serves as another reminder that Microsoft's first-party offerings still lag behind the best the industry has to offer.

Redfall resembles the vampires it's based on. It lacks identity, and sucks the life out of you. Every time I see a spark of potential, it's stomped out by bugs, braindead AI, and an empty world not worth exploring. I wish Arkane well in their next endeavor, because they need to let this one die.
