Resident Evil 3 take some more creative liberties with its source material but still comes out on top. The remake offers a more refined take on the original game to become something much more memorable. While some spirit has been lost in translation, Resident Evil 3 is superbly paced and one of the better modern Resident Evil games, and a chapter that any horror fan shouldn’t miss.

Nemesis himself is just an annoyance.  Unable to be killed until the story allows it he’s just a nuisance to run to, and the controls (especially dodging zombies) can be a right pain in the ass when doing so.  If you get grabbed by a zombie you’ll have to mash A quickly, though that doesn’t avoid damage.  You’ll get a sometimes far-too-long animation of being bitten (though not infected) before you fight them off. The title also comes with Resident Evil: Resistance, a 1 v 4 pvp mode that I didn’t like at launch and don’t like now.  The GP effect should help with the player count though, so if that mode is for you it might have a far higher player count at least.

Resident Evil 3 is a solid remake that aptly pays homage to the original RE3 by failing to live up to its immediate predecessor. While the core gameplay remains strong, with engaging gun controls and a new dodge mechanic that very much feels at home, Raccoon City itself feels disappointingly constrained and its star performer, the Nemesis, has been relegated to scripted sequences. The cloud-related hiccups we encountered here serve as a reminder that the technology is far from perfect, but even if it were, Resident Evil 3 is far from essential. We'd recommend it for the most passionate fans of Capcom’s survival horror franchise who are after another quick fix; everyone else should start with — and probably stick with — RE2.

Overall, Resident Evil 3 is a good game that could’ve been great had it received the same level of care and reinvention that its predecessor had. There is fun to be had here but it falls short of Resident Evil 2, in both quantity and quality of content. As such, it will forever live in its predecessor’s shadow.

Resident Evil 3 is a decent horror-action game that falls short of the Resident Evil 2 standard.

It's no reinvention of the wheel, but Resident Evil 3 is a satisfactory survival horror game nonetheless. Despite some wobbles and a sense of victory-lap complacency, RE3 has just enough intriguing moments to survive.

The remake of Resident Evil 3 makes a strong first impression, and its online companion game Resistance has some interesting ideas, but they both struggle to follow through.

April 6, 2020 Read Review

The Resident Evil 3 remake will appeal to hardcore fans of the franchise and those needing their survival-horror fix, but its especially short length and lack of replay value, even compared to the PS1 original, definitely makes it harder to recommend than Resident Evil 2. There are times when Resident Evil 3 is brilliant, but purists may dislike how much it leans into the action at the expense of its scares. The game looks phenomenal, controls like a dream, and it's nice to have the entire mainline Resident Evil saga available on modern platforms, but it's hard not to be somewhat disappointed after being blown away by Resident Evil 2.

That having been said, I did enjoy my time with Resident Evil 3 and I think that fans of the series, or fans of its predecessor, will enjoy it. However, one group I feel like it might struggle to impress are the fans of the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis which is quite unfortunate after how well last year’s Resident Evil 2 was received.

Capcom have been on a bit of a role recently; bringing the Resident Evil franchise back to its roots in Resident Evil VII and the excellent RE2 Remake whilst giving the Devil May Cry fans one of the best action games we’ve seen. It’s been a great time to be a Capcom fan and with Resident Evil 3 remake coming just a year after its predecessor, can this hot streak continue?

April 1, 2020 Read Review

Resident Evil 3 turns the action up but diminishes the Nemesis and loses some of its luster in the process but still delivers a solid remake that will likely divide fans of the franchise.

There’s no question that last year’s remake of Resident Evil 2 was a game-changer for horror fans everywhere. Taking one of the classic trailblazers in survival horror video games from twenty years ago and completely modernising it made for some fantastic results. With a lot of love and care given to the source material, it was very faithful to what made the game special in the first place, but incredibly thoughtful in making it work for today’s audience.

Resident Evil 3 is a tight and slick action-adventure experience that doesn’t quite reach the heights set by its predecessor

Capcom have done a marvellous job with Resident Evil 3, reviving another of their beloved survival horror classics and making it feel completely fresh once again. Nemesis is back and he’s here to smash your face in.

“Resident Evil 3 is uncomfortable but exhilarating. There’s a thrill in the danger, like roaming a haunted house or riding a roller coaster.”

March 30, 2020 Read Review

Following the high bar of last year’s Resident Evil 2 (our 2019 game of the year, no less), this doesn’t just remake the original PS1 game from the ground up, but manages to take inspiration from much of the series’ history.

March 30, 2020 Read Review

Last year’s Resident Evil 2 remake was a bit of a layup for Capcom. The original RE2 is one of the most impeccably-designed games of all time and the remake largely succeeded by sticking to the blueprint. Revamping Resident Evil 3 is a more challenging prospect, as the original game had some great ideas, but arguably wasn’t a great game overall. Resident Evil 3 also leaned more heavily toward action, which the franchise has had a mixed track record with.

March 30, 2020 Read Review

The Resident Evil 3 remake manages to take the core elements from the original and make them new again. The RE Engine also provides the right platform for extremely detailed facial animations and environments. Although this remake might run a rather linear course, don't let that deter you from jumping into this punchy, solid, action title that's extremely well-paced from start to finish. This is yet another example of Capcom taking an already great property and somehow making something new ou...

After the success of last year's Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom has released a new reimagining of Resident Evil 3 which sadly isn't as good as its predecessor but still a fun time all the same.

March 30, 2020 Read Review

On its own, the remake of Resident Evil 3 is another hallmark achievement for Capcom. It may not satisfy purists of the original, but there's no reason that fans of what the RE2 remake accomplished won't enjoy this. It is hard to compare the two, but RE3 does introduce more action elements much like the original version did and it packages the game up nice for a 6-10 hour campaign. Visually, the game supersedes the remake of RE2 in a few ways while it's held back in others due to the frame rate issues at a distance. Both Jill and Carlos are well done and Nemesis is as frightening as ever. The emphasis on strategy is a big part of RE3 as the puzzles take a back seat. What wasn't needed was the tacked on Resistance multiplayer mode, but the grind that it has to offer may entice some people to stay engaged. The technical issues cannot be overlooked, but Capcom states that the main game and Resistance are a complete package, so it's hard to complain about what amounts to bonus content. The main focus is that Capcom did not miss a step on the remake of Resident Evil 3 as it's just as astounding in its execution as Resident Evil 2.

Short it may be, but Resident Evil 3 is also delightfully sweet. Or as sweet as a survival horror game possibly can be, anyway. Pared back, streamlined and completely brilliant, you'll have a blast outrunning Nemesis all over again.

March 30, 2020 Read Review

In terms of thrills and spills, Resident Evil 3 offers what is perhaps the best Resident Evil campaign ever. There’s less busywork to bog you down, allowing you to move through the game at an enjoyably brisk pace. And while it is no doubt more action-focused, it’s incredibly tense at times. The Resident Evil 2 remake reminded us why we fell in love with the series all those years ago and now Resident Evil 3 cements the feeling. This is a wonderful celebration of the old and new, and we just hope that future Resident Evil instalments somewhat adhere to the formula.

Fans will certainly be happy that the Resident Evil 3 remake exists, and will be excited for a potential Code Veronica followup, but unfortunately this adventure just wasn't as worthy of a revisit.

March 30, 2020 Read Review

“This pandemic has spread faster than any disease in modern history.” That’s the very first line you’ll hear when you start up Resident Evil 3. It’s a bit on the nose given the current situation in the world, and while we aren’t exactly dealing with zombies or monstrous mutations (yet), I couldn’t help but grimly chuckle at the absurd reality of it all; a wry laugh as if to say “the timing of this one is impeccable, for better or worse.” It’s a thought that was constantly at the back of my mind while I played through Resident Evil 3. It’s not like the game is all new though. It’s been a long time coming. First envisioned as Resident Evil 3: Nemesis back in 1999, the 2020 game follows the likes of last year’s Resident Evil 2, not only remaking but fully reimagining the original game.

March 30, 2020 Read Review

Fans spent over 20 years clamoring for a remake of a specific entry in the series, and it wasn't Resident Evil 3. Let that serve as proof that developers often know what we want better than we do. I did not go into this review expecting RE3's reimagining to be the best Resident Evil I've played, or one of the best games I've played, ever.

March 30, 2020 Read Review

When Capcom claimed it would be making drastic, sweeping adjustments to its second remake in as many years, the Japanese developer most certainly wasn't kidding. Resident Evil 3 has used the PSone classic as inspiration rather than a rigid structure it largely needs to stick to, dramatically changing the narrative and even cutting some important locations and enemies entirely. The impact of that will depend on your experience with the original game, but for those who return to Raccoon City more often than not, it'll be tough not to come away disappointed. Resident Evil 3 is absolutely more than worth playing. However, it continues to linger in the shadow of Resident Evil 2.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the first third party title to be a part of Xbox’s Play Anywhere program, allowing the game and saves to be playable on both PC and Xbox interchangeably. Previously there have been more than a few hiccups with this program, but Resident Evil 7 runs mostly without any hitches. I played at much higher frame rate and graphical fidelity with a high level of stability with ease. My saves transferred over mostly seamlessly, I think I had to retry my cloud synchronization once but otherwise my experience was good. There is a current issue with DRM for some, where the game itself won’t actually launch on the purchased PC, which has been identified and is being worked on.

February 9, 2017 Read Review

Resident Evil 7 feels as terrifying as it does modern, all while returning the series to its roots. It hits some familiar bumps along the way, but this is the best this series has felt in years.

Resident Evil HD is a remake done right. Rather than bend over backwards to please a new generation of gamers, it proudly sticks by its roots and is better because of it. Those looking to try something "new" should look to the past with this spot-on remaster.
