Vengeance is undoubtedly the definitive and best way to play Shin Megami Tensei V, with a fantastic new narrative path and quality-of-life adjustments that are so good you wonder how the game was released without them.

As a good old tradition at Atlus, the studio once again launched an enhanced re-release of its JRPG – now with Vengeance for Shin Megami Tensei V, nearly 3 years since it rocked the Nintendo Switch. Like Royal is to Persona 5, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is not some minor update with a few quality-of-life improvements, but a huge definitive enhancement – complete with a new story campaign centered around a new girl, new Nahobino form, places, demons, and so much more.

Originally released exclusively for the Switch in 2021, Shin Megami Tensei V may have been the first entry in the series many players may have even heard of. While its spin-off series Persona is much more widely known – and the two share a lot of creature and combat design – the SMT series takes things in a very different direction.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, to put simply, is a director’s cut. It’s the original game with a whole bunch of new features – new ways to explore, fight, and experience the story. But most importantly, Vengeance finally breaks SMTV out of its Switch exclusivity prison and into every modern console. Returning mostly unchanged are the fantastically tense battles and exploration, with a plethora of mechanical additions, updates and significant changes to the story. But major and minor t...

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is one of the best and most intricate roleplaying games of the modern era. With two 80-hour routes to play full of endearing characters, engaging story moments, and addictive gameplay, it is a masterclass in JRPGs.

Outside the changes to the plot, multiple quality-of-life improvements have been made to make the overall experience more enjoyable, with the most prominent change being the save-anywhere ability. The new save feature completely changes the game, allowing players to save their progress from the menu at any point. For a long time, Atlus has forced players to utilize pre-established save points, meaning that perishing often resulted in having to replay entire sequences. For a game that can already begin to feel monotonous at times, this feature drastically improves the flow of the game and helps to alleviate some of that...

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance offers a lot for players, both old and new; an impressive enhanced art style, multiple story paths, and a definitive sense of the series progressing from what it once was. There may not be a ton of new things to justify purchasing the game again, but the additions that are here are excellent at keeping fans intrigued about what's going to happen next. Long-time fans will likely already know what they're getting into, as the game hasn't changed its turn-based combat and capture loops in a while. Still, those same fans have kept these games...

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is an excellent addition to the franchise that's a must-play for franchise fans, and well worth picking up for those curious about dipping their toes in the water. The difficulty level is still there, but it has become a lot more manageable thanks to quality of life updates. Just don’t be disappointed if you show up expecting Persona, as the narrative and story qualities of the latter is a world apart.

While the Vengeance re-release doesn't fundamentally change what Shin Megami Tensei V is, numerous adjustments and improvements allow SMTV to be the best version of itself.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is a great refresh of a game that I had gripes with back then. Besides the far more interesting Vengeance route, the additional quality-of-life changes, added mechanics, and greatly improved performance make Vengeance easily the best version of a great turn-based RPG. Great for returning players and an even better deal for new ones. ∎

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is the definitive way to experience SMTV. The new story is much more interesting and makes a perfect entry point for Persona fans, though it does miss out on some important plot points. The tweaks to combat make things feel that much tighter and strategic. With new bosses that even veterans will struggle with, Vengeance feels like an entirely new game.

Despite being a flagship franchise, Atlus has never shied away from taking risks and experimenting with Shin Megami Tensei. Even without taking spinoffs like Persona or Devil Summoner into consideration, the “core” series has taken new forms and reinvented itself over multiple decades and platforms. 2021’s Shin Megami Tensei V was a prime example, both respecting its oppressive, hardcore roots while embracing Atlus’ evolving audience and conventional shifts in games as a whole. It only makes sense that in revisiting such a recent title, Atlus has done far more than produce a simple port with some bonuses. Shin Megami Tensei...

I, like many others, used to describe the Megami Tensei series as “Pokémon for adults,” but I no longer believe that shorthand is entirely accurate. Megami Tensei is Pokémon for the ruthless, those able to exchange compassion and attachment for the cold reality of spiritual warfare. Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance’s “save anywhere” feature, overworld shortcuts, and shallow storyline, however, result in a too-frictionless and therefore flat experience. The moment-to-moment gameplay may still be as fulfilling as any previous Megami Tensei game when it strikes a delicate balance between new and old mechanics, but Vengeance’s overall lack of texture fails...

Atlus took every bit of feedback to heart and its re-do of SMT V feels like the studio’s personal Canon of Vengeance. While I’m not entirely convinced this is the game the developer originally envisioned, with Kazuyuki Yamai’s promises of tackling heavy topics like terrorism and Masayuki Doi’s flashy ideas of riding on Hayataro back, I truly believe Vengeance is the best version of Shin Megami Tensei V that Atlus could deliver.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is the updated and expanded re-release of Shin Megami Tensei V, the fifth instalment in the mainline Shin Megami Tensei franchise. The original game was generally well-received. However, it did get hit with some minor criticisms, especially regarding the human cast. Vengeance‘s new story mode tackles those areas of relative weakness and shows no mercy.
