The LEGO Movie Videogame Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

If there is one absolutely infallible truth about life it is this – YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO PLAY WITH LEGO. That goes doubly true if you’re a guy, I’m 36 and saving up for a LEGO Ewok Village to which I have no shame whatsoever. In LEGO’s ever expanding universe they have made the huge jump onto the big screen with the wildly successful (and rightfully so, it’s great) ‘The LEGO Movie’ and if ever there was a movie that was pretty much tailor made to support the movie to video game tie-in then this is it. The difference here is that in rather atypical fashion to most tie-in games this one is a...

It’s not a bad game, but it’s not a “must have” either. The LEGO Movie Videogame does a decent job telling the movie’s story and being its own licensed tie-in game — to its own licensed tie-in movie. Thankfully, both are fun in their own right.

Traveller’s Tales’ familiar LEGO game formula has transformed many famous film franchises into enjoyable family games, with the recreation of iconic protagonists and comic book heroes waving an endearing spell in the direction of consumers around the world. It’s fitting, then, that the recently released flick based on the globe’s greatest toy should get a game of its own, with The LEGO Movie Videogame bringing the events of Warner Bros’ latest blockbuster to your PlayStation 4.

Although I’m a huge fan of the Lego video game franchise I am aware that the formula is becoming a bit stale; run through a level, break stuff, find hidden

It’s not that the LEGO Movie Videogame is bad, it just severely lacks the appeal of what made the previous LEGO titles so endearing. The series is best when it mocks the licensed source material, but the parody is sadly missing from The LEGO Movie Videogame because its solely based on a film about LEGO. Instead of being a copycat, we would have enjoyed seeing an original story set either before or after the events of the movie. Like the previous LEGO games, there are an exorbitant amount of characters to unlock, items to collect, and blocks to bust. But somewhere amidst the cutesy charm and fu...

Fun, but it just doesn't have the same appeal as other entries in the series.

That being said, there will be die-hard LEGO game fans who enjoy this release, doubly so if they loved the feature film. It's by no means a bad game, it actually runs silky smooth, looks quite nice on next-gen hardware, and the controls are fluid and responsive; it just doesn't evolve the base formula enough to make it stand out. The LEGO Movie Videogame is better than most movie tie-ins, but for a LEGO game it's passable at best.

I didn’t so much play The LEGO Movie Videogame as I did gently prod it toward a conclusion. I pushed the buttons that appeared on screen to automatically transform scattered pieces into spaceships and trampolines, performed mindless quick time events, and beat up enemies, though there was never a reason to use anything but the jump attack.

The LEGO franchise has always had the ability to create pitch perfect parodies of the various creative works it has come up against, from Hobbits to super heroes there have been so many spot on observations and perfectly timed comedy beats in the games to date. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if those many gaming riffs are what led to the creation of a LEGO Movie in the first place, but how do you parody yourself? By taking all the quirks of LEGO fans everywhere and making them as ridiculou...

Thankfully, The LEGO Movie Videogame introduces a stellar roster of characters. Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman and even Gandalf are all unlockable and provide an exciting burst of gameplay for a brief amount of time. As always, the game is better played with a buddy. It’s easy enough for anybody to pickup and is great in short spurts. Unfortunately, for older players there is almost no challenge in the gameplay, but this means that it’s completely achievable to beat for its target audience.
