Back 4 Blood's first major expansion deepens the roguelite elements of the game, but still stumbles on issues that have been present since launch.

Many Left 4 Dead fans have been clamoring for a sequel over the 12 years since Left 4 Dead 2 was released—not to mention PlayStation players, who were left out. While a sequel was reportedly in development, it was ultimately cancelled. The problem is Turtle Rock Studios became an independent company back in 2011, while the L4D IP stayed with Valve. Other games have attempted to fill the gap, but now Turtle Rock Studios itself is back with its own attempt. It isn’t called Left 4 Dead 3, but it’s the closest we’re going to get because our Back 4...

I am not saying Back 4 Blood is bad by any stretch, as I said I enjoyed it (issues and all), but it is what it is. Do I recommend you pick it up? Yes - on its own merits it does change the formula enough to be a different flavour, but it’s also co-op so even if the game bores you, the fun you can make with the company won't.

Back 4 Blood is a great multiplayer shooter for the masses that ultimately neglects its single-player crowd. Playing through the campaign with friends or a legit human team can make a big difference when engaging with this title. It’s best to stick with multiplayer for this title since it’s not solo-friendly. But with literally everything else that comes to mind (from Swarm to the cards and online matchmaking), it’s essential to recognize this game as a damn good time. The bugs are few and far in-between; they definitely won’t get in the way of having a good time – unless...

I so badly want to love Back 4 Blood, but its grindy nature and difficulty spikes out of nothing let it down, leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth. It has potential for those in it for the long haul, accumulating cards and building specialised decks to match the challenge, but right now I just have no desire to go back 4 more.

In Back 4 Blood, we have been given a finely tooled zombie shooter, but it lacks the power of the original.

Celebrated filmmaker Jim Jarmusch once said, “Originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it.” Back 4 Blood, a new zombie-themed co-op shooter developed by Turtle Rock Studios, sure puts this principle into practice. Even its name is a direct callback to the studio’s earlier creation, Left 4 Dead, which heavily “inspired” this game.

It’s unfortunate that Back 4 Blood does lack some of the personality of Left 4 Dead but I can safely say that Back 4 Blood is nearly everything I wanted in a Left 4 Dead 3 and then some. Hopefully, over time, Turtle Rock will be able to fix the issues that are present and maybe add in more harrowing Infected, erm, Ridden.

Back 4 Blood is a worthy successor to the Left 4 Dead franchise. It maintains the fundamentals of what made the original so addictive and satisfying while adding its own little flair with the rogue-like deck building system. What holds Back 4 Blood from getting a better score is its high price tag and lack of solo play progression.

Whether I’m laughing out loud over a brilliant strategy gone awry or just barely getting onto an escape vehicle with Ridden right on my heels, Back 4 Blood has the right formula for a good few weekends of co-op fun. If it gets even more support and updates down the line, I could see this taking up a spot as a go-to social game for quite a while to come. Really, it just feels good to have this sort of game back again.

Back 4 Blood is the spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead and is Turtle Rock Studios’ first major title since releasing the poorly received Evolve. However, since Turtle Rock Studios produced the original Left 4 Dead, Back 4 Blood isn’t a clone or a ripoff. Instead, it’s very much what Left 4 Dead 3 could have looked like if we lived in a parallel universe where Valve hadn’t largely abandoned all its IPs.

While the majority of what I’ve written above has been negative towards Back 4 Blood, there are going to be loads of players ready and willing to take the jump. Lots of the issues in Back 4 Blood can be overlooked when you have a team of friends willing to back you up. How long you and your friends are willing to stick with the game beyond the initial jaunt is yet to be determined, but if you are all hot to collect cards and craft deck builds, it could have legs. Likewise, if you are burning to play a...

Back 4 Blood is a wonderful call-back to the games that have come before it. And even though it’s not a direct sequel to Left 4 Dead 2, it brings back the most important elements of the series. But it shouldn’t be seen as only a spiritual successor because it adds so many new features that make it an extremely satisfying modern-day FPS. While a few elements impede the gameplay, they can be easily overlooked when you have a great team to play with.

From the team who gave us the original zombie horde shooter, Turtle Rock Studios returns with Back 4 Blood. The online multiplayer first-person shooter is a spiritual successor to the beloved Left 4 Dead series, mostly similar in gameplay and tone. While there are certainly issues making some ravenous, overall everyone should have a fun time blasting through swarms of Ridden in this action romp.

Back 4 Blood could use some more polish for bugs, technical concerns, and more. Its technical issues are not a big deal all the time, sometimes resulting in zombies just running into walls or not reacting to the player’s immediate presence. But when they are a big deal, it can be painful for players. Watching an NPC stand in place and accept death by a horde of zombies is bewildering and discouraging, while the game crashing just before the final mission and resetting to the start of the previous mission is an even bigger issue. Overall, it’s got a lot...

Back 4 Blood manages to recapture much of the magic Turtle Rock Studios crafted more than a decade ago. In short bursts, Back 4 Blood is a fantastic co-op shooter filled with tight gameplay, a robust card-building system that lends itself to replayability, and a buttery-smooth performance that manages to capture that frenetic, zombie-slaying action of its forebearer. The game does have its fair share of issues, though, some of them copied over from Left 4 Dead, including a paper-thin plot and characters. The AI Director can be brutal, bordering on unfair at times. Level and enemy variety also take...

Back 4 Blood’s concept is a slam dunk. Give the team responsible for trailblazing the zombie co-op shooter with Left 4 Dead another shot at the genre, adding a plethora of modern trappings and a new wrinkle to differentiate it from Turtle Rock Studios’ past work. But after countless tech tests and some massive shoes to fill, can the frenetic first-person shooter recapture the magic? While not perfect, Back 4 Blood is a genuinely fun time with friends, and it has enough new tricks to keep fans coming back for more.

I’ll reiterate: Back 4 Blood isn’t a bad game. But it could have been so much better. Its difficulty needs balancing, as does the amount of enemies thrown at you at any one time. Ultimately, most levels simply have too much going on to be enjoyable – and each Act would have benefitted from being substantially shorter. Get a competent group of friends together and you might have some fun, but chances are zombie fatigue is going to set in long before you reach the end of the campaign.

It’s safe to say that we’re probably not going to be getting a Left 4 Dead 3 in our lifetimes, but Back 4 Blood is going to be as close as we’ll get in the time being. The game preserves mostly everything that made the two Left 4 Dead games so great while integrating it into the modern gaming sphere.

Is Back 4 Blood the Left 4 Dead 3 we've been waiting for? Yes! It's a worthy spiritual successor to Valve's classic zombie-slaying series of multiplayer games, and offers a well-designed Campaign mode with some impressive new features such as its strategic Card system. The difficulty perhaps needs balancing a little more, and the lack of meaningful progression when playing Solo Campaign needs addressing sharpish, but otherwise we've had a blast with Back 4 Blood so far, and we look forward to many more Campaign runs in the weeks, months and years to come.

In spite of its shortcomings, though, Back 4 Blood is already starting to feel like it could very well become my go-to zombie shooter whenever I just want to have a fun, social experience with friends. Despite how saturated the zombie game market has become, Back 4 Blood cuts through all the noise and delivers a solid co-op shooter that oozes charm and prioritizes fun with friends over everything else.

The Left 4 Dead series had a massive impact on video games as a whole, featuring many of the mechanics that still power modern co-op games. Despite the series' success and legacy, Left 4 Dead has disappeared from the spotlight, leaving fans no choice but to play the two classic games while waiting for a new entry in the series or for its spiritual successor. And such a game has finally arrived.

You'll find a lot of fun in Back 4 Blood. Turtle Rock Studios managed to take something that was old and give it enough of a touch-up to make sure we recognized it but played with it differently. It's fun to hop on with your friends and blast away the zombies and compete in the PvP, but you have to get past the first half of the game to get to the best parts. It doesn't help that the story gives you nothing to cling to, but once you get past those parts, the tension and excitement kick in. But...

Back 4 Blood is a good game, it improves on the Left 4 Dead formula in a way that is challenging and creative. However, the move to forcing people to advance the overall game by going online, being forced to work with randoms in a very badly connected cross-platform multiplayer games where without a solid communication base, resulting in Back 4 Blood being an experience in frustration rather than a very enjoyable game. If Turtle Rock allows for private games where you can do under 4 players with bots instead, then maybe this game can truly be something that is...

Few games have a beta a couple of months ahead of launch that somehow plays better than the retail release. Back 4 Blood is one of them, and I’m baffled how it happened. If they can fix up the controls, or you’re like my friend who seems to think bad FPS controls on console are actually great then this game is worth a check-in on Game Pass. If you’re on PC I’d say go for it no matter what, as if you’re able to look past how bad the dialogue is the gameplay itself can be mighty fun.
