Black Myth: Wukong infuses the cultural heritage of China, its rich mythology, and one of its most important pieces of literature with an action RPG structure that's as deep as it is grand in scale. However, this same scope leads to some inconsistency across the board that is a detriment to the overall quality.

Black Myth: Wukong is visually impressive and has decent gameplay. However, its story relies heavily on the source material and may ostracize those unfamiliar with the novel.

Black Myth: Wukong is a visually stunning, action-packed adventure that continues the tale of A Journey to the West. You'll encounter formidable bosses, explore breathtaking locations, and discover how this epic story unfolds. Despite a few shortcomings, the game guarantees an unforgettable experience for anyone who picks it up.

Black Myth: Wukong may look like another soulslike on the surface, but in truth, it is a fantastic action RPG with great boss battles, memorable characters, and my favourite mechanic of the year so far, Transformations. You can be a rock with legs!

Black Myth: Wukong turned out to be one of the best games you can play in 2024. The challenge has been properly balanced, and the whole thing is complemented by impressive graphics. However, Game Science studio had some technical flaws.

Packed full with secrets, Black Myth: Wukong offers a lot more content than meets the eye. While the main story path feels a bit repetitive with one boss after the other, the exploration and hidden side content makes up for it. Having a bigger arsenal of weapons and stances would have made the experience more fun, but it’s a good experience nonetheless.

Ultimately, Black Myth: Wukong is what I like to call “Peak Fine.” It’s great when it finally opens up and lets you play it, and has a number of memorable bosses to fight. There’s a lot to explore and see and do, and I imagine most players will miss a good chunk of the game’s optional content on their first playthrough. But even at its best, Wukong never reaches the highs of the genre’s greats, and never completely comes together in the way the best action games do. It’s not bad, but it’s not special. It’ll take you to the...

Game Science’s adaptation not only pays homage to the beloved Journey to the West but also introduces innovative gameplay mechanics and stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5, making it a standout title in the action RPG genre. Black Myth: Wukong is by all means an ambitious title for a studio’s first project, and for the most part, it succeeds in aiming high. Its strengths in gameplay, visuals, and music are undeniable, but it is held back by technical problems and design choices that may not appeal to everyone.

Black Myth: Wukong is, ultimately, a game about boss fights. Tense, dynamic boss fights that'll have you gawking in awe one minute, and potentially spiking your controller the next. This is a challenging action title — a constant push against increasingly complex and deadly opponents, and there are no difficulty settings to fall back on. That fact alone will be enough to put some people off, but if you can stick with the game and become invested in its rather unique brand of staff-based battling, you'll be rewarded with a degree of spectacle that's so rarely seen outside of bona...

Black Myth: Wukong uses the wonderful canvas of Chinese mythology to draw you into its world that is both beautiful and dangerous. Struggling at times to fully tell its story, its narrative mostly gives the game structure while leaving out a lot of detailed substance hoping for you to somehow make it make sense. Sure, the game’s emphasis is combat, but for a soulslike game that looks this beautiful and has so much lore attached to it, you would hope it also spent more time focusing on its story.

Its dramatic and spectacular boss fights just about keep Black Myth: Wukong afloat, but behind all its glitz and glamour is a frustratingly hollow and rudderless action game.

Black Myth: Wukong features stunning graphics, engaging mechanics and an imaginative setting. However, it's bogged down by odd level design choices and a few technical hiccups. Despite its faults, it's a solid action RPG that fans of the genre will enjoy.

Black Myth Wukong is the latest retelling of the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West, this time developed by locals at the China-based (slightly problematic, allegedly sexist) GameScience.

Four years after its reveal, Black Myth: Wukong, the hotly anticipated game from developer Science Works is here. It is an action RPG that adapts the Chinese mythology story of Journey to the West, with jaw-dropping views, flashy combat, and animations topped with striking, challenging bosses. It’s understandable why such a hook has gamers chomping at the bit to play it. Following all those years of hype, the game mostly delivers on all its promises, providing a cruel but beautiful world...

Black Myth: Wukong is a game that shies away from the Soulslike label, yet it is clearly gunning for the Soulslike audience. It is far from the best in the genre, but it's also not the worst game that has followed in Dark Souls' footsteps. If you go into it expecting a mostly standard Soulslike experience with some blood-boiling boss encounters mixed in with basic level design, you will have a better time than if you were going into it expecting it to be like a traditional character action game. Black Myth: Wukong offers about 30 hours of gameplay for...

Black Myth: Wukong is an incredibly engaging and entertaining action RPG in many ways. While the overarching narrative leaves a lot to be desired, and the technical and balance issues can be a hindrance, the game still provides an epic, unforgettable gameplay and cinematic experience that not many games can rival.

Black Myth: Wukong made more than a few heads turn with its reveal trailer released back in 2020, but it was with the switch to Unreal Engine 5 that the action role-playing game developed by Game Science entered most players' radars. With beautiful environments and highly detailed characters enhanced by the engine, Black Myth: Wukong promised to be one of the first truly next-gen action role-playing games.

The retelling of the popular Chinese story was done right as my eyes were glued to the screen at every in-game and animated cutscene. The immersion was inescapable and the feeling of conquering a challenge after every boss was all the more satisfying. I would rate Black Myth: Wukong a solid 9/10 and looking forward to more content for this game and other releases from GameScience.

All in all, Black Myth: Wukong is an astounding triumph, one that blends a story celebrating Chinese and other East Asian cultures with an original retelling that has resonant themes, all complemented by spectacular design and exhilarating combat. While the narrative is confusing at first — as I can personally attest to — it nonetheless encourages you to embrace that sense of strangeness and wonder as you venture into distant lands, much like a certain journey written centuries ago that has stood the test of time.

Black Myth: Wukong took us by surprise. It had a lot of potential from its initial reveal, but what Game Science has been able to create is nothing short of greatness. This is a visual treat that brings ancient China and Chinese mythology to life like never before, crafting a story that, while somewhat vague, will have you compelled to progress further thanks to its creative presentation values. On top of that, the world design and quest design are monumental, as each area has a ton of exploratory value and will always keep the campaign fresh. The combat can get...

Black Myth: Wukong is living proof that developers other than FromSoftware can create top-tier action-RPGs. Its exploration and character customization are more restrictive than I'd have liked, but its combat and boss fights are second to none.

If you’ve been following Black Myth: Wukong‘s development, you know there’s been lots of discussion and speculation about what kind of game it is. It’s an action RPG for sure. But is it a Soulslike, an open-world RPG, a boss rush Monster Hunter-clone, or a distant cousin to God of War? Yes, no and it doesn’t matter. In the end, developer Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong blends all these elements while retaining an incredibly strong identity. It certainly looks like nothing else. Few games come close to Black Myth: Wukong’s intricately detailed, photorealistic environments.

More than a few bosses brought memorable battles to the table, but most of them were just a relief to get through. Other aspects, such as exploration, a lack of danger, and a boring protagonist, make most of the journey subpar. Even if it may match other games in terms of graphics and art, this title never truly provides a fantastic Soulslike or action-adventure experience.
