Playground Games continues to master the art of driving games that are both accessible and complex, and Horizon 4's numerous meaningful changes keep the series lively and looking fantastic.

Racing games can too often trade a sense of character and personality in the pursuit of realism and motorsport recreation – some might even cast that aspersion at the Forza Motorsport games themselves – but Forza Horizon 4 has no such trouble. It’s undoubtedly the best racing experience on Xbox One, and is full of challenges, races and stunts that are constantly rewarding you for your sheer love of racing. With its changing seasons and dynamic weather, Forza Horizon 4 feels new and fresh every week. Whether you’re a seasoned car snob or a virtual learner driver, this Xbox Game...

Unfortunately for Playground Games, they must work within the ecosystem Microsoft provides on PC. It’s just that the ecosystem is such utter trash that one cannot ignore it when discussing the gaming experience as a whole. The Xbox app and Microsoft’s Xbox experience on PC are so intrinsically tied to gaming on UWP that it’s necessary to discuss it. The experience is still utter garbage and does nothing to dispel the notion that PC gamers are still second-class citizens to Microsoft.

While I didn’t think Playground Games could do it again, they absolutely have. Not only does Forza Horizon 4 surpasses their previous entries, but the addition of dynamic seasons helps to push longevity of the game and is well done. Tossing in a huge selection of cars and fun-filled challenges, this game does not disappoint. A game for both car lovers and gamers who love going fast, even if they’re sideways while doing it.

Forza Horizon 4 absolutely nails the driving experience with its tight handling and dynamic seasons, and is as close as you can get to a perfect racing game.

Two years ago I reviewed Forza Horizon 3 and said that I found it to be a surprise due to the path other racing titles were going. It was a game that just offered a great, fun, time behind the wheels of some fantastic cars in a beautiful representation of Australia. The more I played it after the review, the more Australia got a little stale, though still stunning to behold. It was a bit flat and became a little monotonous. To remedy those concerns Forza Horizon 4 comes to my, and Playground Games' homeland of good old Blighty, a...

Forza Horizon 4 is a huge and beautiful game with a staggering amount of content. It sets a soaring new standard for driving games that competitors should be afraid of. A fantastic game, ideal for both casual and hardcore fans of racing.

Forza Horizon 4 is another fantastically fun Forza Horizon game even if it’s tough to pinpoint Playground’s grandest ambition. If it was to reinvent the series with seasons, that falls a bit flat and underwhelming. But, if it was to simply remove the constraints and make everything as open and free as possible, then Playground hit its target in the most impressive way. Regardless, Forza Horizon is still the king of open-world arcade racers, and it really doesn’t look like that’ll change anytime soon.

Against other racing games, Forza Horizon 4 stands alone as the best representation of what arcade fun is all about, evoking the spirit of OutRun, Need for Speed, and Burnout: Paradise. It is a love letter to car enthusiasts that doesn’t shun outsiders and casual players. It manages to avoid being dragged into tired open-world tropes despite being confined to only vehicles, an outstanding acheivement on its own. The game is incredibly well-polished at every turn and offers truly seamless cross-play between consoles and PC with zero compromise. Horizon 4 is the new high-water mark for online connectivity and shared...

Forza Horizon 4 almost overwhelms with the amount of great content it offers. Complete a race, and another three appear. Travel down a new road, and you’re alerted that you still have 500 more to discover. Hop behind the wheel of a new car, and the game dangles another dozen in front of you. As you pick away at each of the game’s 26 distinct campaign threads (yes, you read that correctly), you may find yourself distracted by hidden billboards, landmarks, seek-and-find missions, and instanced events that pop up at the top of every hour. Forza Horizon 4 offers an...

Forza Horizon 4 puts everything together. It’s the most complete racing game that I have ever played, and there’s no stone left unturned here. It has a plenty of single-player content, races, and side activities to keep the offline fans happy. Playground Games doesn’t abandon those fans. On the flip side, there’s so much to explore, see and do with friends and strangers in the game’s remarkable shared world which will cycle through all four seasons weekly, offering new challenges, events and experiences as the colors change. Topping even the extremely impressive gameplay is the game’s jaw-droppingly beautiful visuals and...

The only true downside that Forza Horizon 4 suffers from is a sense of familiarity, and for all that the new setting, weather patterns and online options bring to the table, this is, at its heart, just the next step for the open world racer, rather than a giant leap. The already nigh-on perfect handling model is made even more engaging by the changing of the seasons, and the roster of vehicles jumps to 450, an extra hundred over its predecessor. Of course, when it’s iterating on what was previously the best open world racer in the world, it’s no...

Forza Horizon 4 isn’t as bombastic as its predecessor, but still a challenging and all-encompassing online racer. And the more introverted moments of driving through autumnal or snow-dusted Britain are beautiful, especially as a showcase for Xbox One X.

With a beautiful Blighty and an innovative season-based online endgame, Horizon 4 is a wonderfully polished, thoroughly modern racer. Sadly, it doesn’t feel quite as progressive or impactful as its Aussie predecessor, and there’s a sense the sandbox series is ever so slightly coasting on its laurels.

Forza Horizon 4 feels like a labour of love; a game for car lovers by car lovers. But also, it’s an engrossing experience that’s rewarding every step of the way. Exploring the map feels just as worthwhile as completing events. And its seamless multiplayer features, Forzathon challenges and seasonal events mean that you’re not likely to grow tired of it for years. It is, without a doubt, the best racing game available right now. In fact, it might be the best racing game of all time. If you own an Xbox One, you need Forza Horizon 4. It’s as simple...

If Forza Motorsport is for super serious racing fans, then Forza Horizon is the lively younger sibling that is for those more interested in going on a big adventure. In fact, going on an adventure is exactly what loading up Forza Horizon 4 feels like; driving full pace to the iconic Horizon festival to compete with the best drivers in the world in a variety of vehicles and styles across Britain is instantly just as exciting and adrenaline-pumping as its predecessors. I’ll always have a massive soft spot for the down under delights of Forza Horizon 3, but open-world racing has never looked as good as it does in Forza Horizon 4. It combines a beautiful world that’s really four hugely distinct maps in one with a constantly rewarding and self-renewing racing experience and I really can’t tear myself away from it. Playground Games hasn’t just upped the ante once again; it’s blown the bloody doors off.
