Godfall is often great in its moment to moment gameplay, though fails to ever make anything of its story. It's a fun time, but never feels like it reaches its full potential.

Godfall is a godlike load of fun to play. I am a firm believer in giving games a second chance and this one is no exception. Gameplay is smooth and uncomplicated, as is really the rest of it, making it easier to get into, and it’s oh-so-satisfying.

There’s something special here, but the gem that is Godfall is buried deep underneath a pile of issues and lackluster content. Godfall hamstrings most of its good ideas, crippling the game out of the gate. Offering multiplayer but no matchmaking or cross-play, throwing numerous enemies at you at a time without a way to toggle between targets, forcing you to chase after enemies hitting you with projectiles when your only long-range attack is on a too-long cooldown, and of course, that $70 price tag. It will be interesting to see what shape Godfall is in a year from now, but...

A visually stunning game, Godfall suffers from repetitive combat and a lackluster story that is forgettable after the first hour. In an industry with so many Dark Souls-style games, this is not one to spend time on.

The next generation of consoles is finally here and like all console releases, we look for the games that really push the hardware to the limits. Games that show us what the next-generation will look like for years to come. May it be with fancy graphics or new gameplay that we’ve never seen before. Godfall promises to be that game, the worlds first “looter-slasher, melee action-RPG”. A bold claim, considering the Diablo franchise exists. Unfortunately, this is a game that lacks any ori...

It's hard to say whether Godfall will receive the support it needs to really help with its longevity in the long run. We've seen so many live service games get a lackluster launch, only to flourish a year or two later. Sea of Thieves did it, No Man's Sky is practically the poster boy for "games that bombed at launch before getting redeemed later", and I hear Fallout 76 is actually decent now.The same could happen for Godfall, but at least for now, unless you're really itching to play a brand new looter game, you can probably give this one...

Godfall review for PS5 and PC. Godfall is a game that’s stuck in time. The graphics and combat are top-notch, delivering what you’d expect of a modern hack-and-slash with some unique aspects thrown in the mix. However, when it comes to story and game design, Godfall feels more like it’s out of the early-2000s. Unfortunately, this produces a title that makes an excellent first impression that quickly fades to monotony.

Like other looter-style games, Godfall could become a much more appealing prospect in time. Godfall's $70 price tag works against it big time because as it stands, it's difficult to recommend such an expensive game to anyone when it recycles the same content repeatedly throughout the entire experience. Godfall's core combat mechanics are great and it's a visually-impressive experience, but gamers may want to wait and see if the game gets some compelling post-launch content updates first.

Last week Mitch gave an overview of Godfall and his thoughts thus far. Now he's ready to pass his final verdict of the PS5/EGS title that ushers in next-gen.

It’s a shame this had to be $70 out of the gate on PS5 (it’s $59.99 on PC) and that it has to be tethered to an always-online system. Whoever made that decision doomed this project’s reputation, at least in the short term. Godfall is going to go down as one of the most divisive games of this generation’s launch: a relic to some, a wild whispered-about gem to others. Make sure that before you get it, all of your action-junkie boxes are checked.

Developed by Counterplay Games and published by Gearbox, Godfall has the distinction of being the first game announced to release on the PlayStation 5. With this distinction as well as that of being a console launch exclusive, Godfall did garner a significant amount of attention. While some of the games and series that the title drew comparisons to set the bar quite high, Godfall ultimately became a thing of its own while falling into pitfalls that similar games have experienced.

A disappointment in almost all areas besides combat and graphics, Godfall feels more like a next-generation showcase than anything else. A boatload of stats and unsubstantial loot are just some of Godfall's major problems.

Godfall's monotonous structure is held together by punchy combat that can't bear the full weight.

It takes a while for Godfall’s combat to truly open up and when it does, you’ll revel in its beefy ballet of well-timed blows and counters. That said, it’s hard to ignore the flimsy scaffolding that keeps this PS5 launch title standing, the lack of matchmaking, and a loot system you’ll quickly lose interest in. Although still great fun in short bursts, this isn’t the rousing next-gen RPG experience you’ve been searching for.

The much anticipated launch of Sony’s powerful next generation PlayStation 5 console is upon us, and so are some new games and new IPs. One of the biggest titles that I was looking forward to was developer Counterplay Games’ Godfall—a futuristic looter/slasher, with online co-op, set in a fantasy world, centering on unlocking new suits (called Valorplates) to enhance your gameplay and also earning better and better weapons to increase your power in combat, somewhat akin to the Destiny series.

New console generations are always exciting, and Godfall as a launch title is certainly an appealing prospect. An action-packed hack-and-slash combat-focused looter that looks completely stunning is appetising for sure, and I was one of many who were hooked in by the pretty gameplay footage, hoping for a strong experience with lots of depth to its co-op campaign and enticing endgame. Sadly, Godfall feels like one really solid idea fleshed out ad nauseum across repetitive looking environments,...

Console launches are notoriously difficult for developers as they work to get a grasp on new technology. Historically, many launch titles come off as rushed, but with great promise for a new franchise. Counterplay Games’ first project falls into that category. Godfall packs together a splendid and deep combat system mixed with a quality loot system with plenty of variety. Great boss battles await players during their playthrough but getting through to those boss fights can be a chore. As good and varied as the combat and loot is, the same level of variety doesn’t extend to the world and...

Godfall is one of the most beautiful games released in recent memory. It's just too bad the gameplay and story can't quite keep up.

The combat feels good, but that doesn't stop it from being an aggressively mediocre game that lifted most of its gameplay ideas from better titles. Play those instead.

Godfall's tried and trusted combat feels pleasant from moment-to-moment, but doesn't do enough to distract from an otherwise hollow experience.

Backed by razor-sharp combat, Godfall is at its best when a boss steps into the arena. These foes put up good fights and push you to use everything in your arsenal. The back-and-forth clashes against these titans are intense and lengthy, demanding speed, skill, and strategy. When you eventually deliver a finishing blow, you're rewarded with a feast of loot raining down in a dazzling showering of next-gen particle effects. The gear you obtain is almost always beneficial, giving you more powerful weapons and currency needed to make your existing equipment better. What comes next, however, is a daunting amount...

It's derivative, only has three zones, and doesn't have much to offer besides its combat, but Godfall will be enjoyable to anyone who just wants a well-tuned, good-looking action RPG to slash their way through.

An enjoyable hack and slash looter that plays well despite a sparse, repeating structure

“Godfall's dazzling visuals and promising combat are held back by repetitive dungeon crawling.”

Godfall's incredible visuals and stylish combat lift up an otherwise repetitive and bland hack n' slash adventure that lacks depth.
Read Full ReviewGodfall can be an enjoyable and lovely gear-based action game while it lasts, but the repetition of its missions wears thin before the end of its campaign, and even thinner in the endgame afterward. Its combat is packed full of decisions to make and a healthy mix of familiar and genuinely novel mechanics, but its Valorplate suits aren’t as mechanically diverse as they initially seem on their gorgeous exteriors. With neither an interesting story nor a deep pool of varied content, all the choice Godfall offers doesn’t amount to much more than a bit of brief and shallow fun.
