With the 3DS nearing the end of its lifespan, games like this are often left to the wayside; but for loyalists and those not quite ready to upgrade, Monster Hunter Stories is definitely a game worth picking up. With a fun battle system that doesn’t rely on grinding to level up, and a bright and open world to explore, Monster Hunter Stories takes its namesake in a completely different and impressive direction.
If it weren’t for the prevalence of strange control issues, Monster Hunter Stories on PC would be an easy recommendation for fans of Pokémon or other creature-based RPGs. Without those issues, it is a charming and smart RPG with some fun, unique ideas and smart design.
Monster Hunter Stories is a fun spinoff that holds its roots close to its heart. Dozens of new ideas were thrown in together to create a fun new take on the Monster Hunter series. With new content, voice acting, and higher framerates, the rerelease of Monster Hunter Stories is one worth your time.
The cuteness of Monster Hunter Stories returns remastered for PS4, Switch, and PC. This turn-based RPG offers joyful hours in an adventure full of love, friendship, and colorful Monsties you can even ride.
I remember a time when Monster Hunter was that one niche-as-hell franchise by Capcom that was much bigger in Japan than the West. With the release of Monster Hunter World, the franchise entered the mainstream with a kung-fu kick. It is now, arguably, Capcom’s main franchise, with each new iteration selling like absolute gangbusters. It made sense for Capcom to re-release and re-promote as many niche spinoffs and additional material they could. Why not re-release the former Nintendo 3DS excl...
Aside from disappointing battery life and no 16:10 Aspect Ratio support, Monster Hunter Stories is flawless on the Steam Deck, and I would highly recommend it.
A few years after the release of Wings of Ruin, fans are finally treated to a remake of the original Monster Hunter Stories and it's great.
Monster Hunter Stories pays homage to the best in the franchise and keeps its spirit in its various mechanics. Because it's a turn-based RPG, it features a grand story and strategic combat. With plenty of monsters to collect and raise and lots of crafting and gathering. Monster Hunter Stories provides everything you need in an RPG.
The original Monster Hunter Stories for the Nintendo 3DS is back with a fresh coat of paint. Everyone is doing it these days. Who doesn’t want see an old favorite brought back in a high quality visual lense? I am certainly not complaining. With the arrival of the re-release, good times are in store. As everyone already probably knew. Monster Hunter Stories returns with a new coat of paint and brings with it something a little extra. Oh and Navirou’s here too.
Monster Hunter Stories is a charming and adorable monster-catching experience. Become engrossed with its characters, hatch some Monsties and have a blast in the humorous world and its weirdly addictive gameplay. Definite recommend!
Monster Hunter Stories is an admirable glow up of the 3DS classic that will please fans and newcomers alike.
Although clichéd and in need of some sharpening, Monster Hunter Stories 2 offers a fun and lighthearted take on the world of Monster Hunter. At the same time, it improves on the Pokémon formula and is much more than just another clone.
Overall, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is pretty friendly to new players. Its RPG mechanics are straightforward enough to grasp pretty quickly and the game doesn't spend too much time muddling the experience with tutorials. Even for someone who's never played a Monster Hunter game in their life, they'll still find plenty to enjoy in this RPG.
Never too late to make new friends – and make them fight your battles for you.
Capcom's monster-collecting Monster Hunter spinoff manages to set itself apart from the crowd.
Nevertheless, Monster Hunter Stories isn’t a game to be played for a deep plot or complex systems, but for its exploration and monster-collecting. It struggles with frame rate and texture pop-in on original 3DS systems, but overall it’s a fun turn-based RPG.
Monster Hunter Stories is an enjoyable 40+ hour romp that adds depth and personality to world that often lacks narrative. Collecting monsters, becoming immersed in in-game events, and taking in the rather beautiful world that Capcom has created are all pivotal to enjoying this experience, while the tedium associated with battles can trigger a desire for multiple breaks during extended sessions. Still, Stories shines in a way that other Monster Hunter games don't, making a name for itself while honoring what came before it.
Monster Hunter Stories is an excellent adventure that channels the colourful world of Capcom’s storied series into a joyous JRPG. It suffers from performance issues on non-New 3DS hardware, but it’s still full of personality, beautifully presented and fun to play, with combat that’s easy to grasp but engaging throughout. Longtime MonHun fans will appreciate Stories as a thoughtfully-made spin-off, but the gameplay template and tone are so different that you don’t need to be familiar with — or even enjoy! — mainline Monster Hunter to have a great time here. Regardless of whether you’ve been hunting Hornetaurs since the beginning or couldn’t tell a Felyne from a Fatalis, Stories is yet another charming 3DS RPG that’s well worth your time.
Monster Hunter Stories is that rare and magical opportunity to befriend your favorite monster and ride it into battle.
Monster Hunter Stories is an adorable instillation to the popular Monster Hunter series, mixing up the normal formula to create a cute role-playing game centred around hatching cool monsters to fight with. Kind of like Pokémon but set within the already existing universe of Monster Hunter.
I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed my more than 50 hours with Monster Hunter Stories so far. It effectively eliminates the oh-so-common boring RPG grind, implements a novel turn-based battle system, and sincerely surprises me with seemingly limitless customizability. Though wrapped in a pleasant, sugary coating, Monster Hunter Stories did all of this while retaining the spirit of the Monster Hunter world with some small yet enjoyable nods to fans. I can’t wait to dive back into the endgame and hatch myself a Kirin.
The world of Monster Hunter is ripe for expansion, and Monster Hunter Stories proves it. In the past we’ve been restricted to taking down the massive beasts and using their skin and bones in order to fashion ourselves some new clothes and more weapons to collect more skin and bones - but Monster Hunter Stories takes a different approach - in fact, despite the title, you won’t be doing much hunting at all.
As someone who is terrible at the main series, I really enjoyed Monster Hunter Stories, even if it is a bit easy early on. The more traditional RPG-style of gameplay is a radical departure from what the core games are like, but that doesn't mean it's not worth your time. If you can put aside the fact that this plays rather differently than the past games, you'll find an enjoyable experience for new and returning fans alike.
I wasn’t super impressed by Monster Hunter Stories but I don’t think the developers intended for it to be a game-changer. It’s an above-average RPG infused with some of the cuteness of the Monster Hunter universe, with portability to boot.
While it’s certainly more approachable than your typical Monster Hunter game, Stories fails to capture what has made the series such a hit over the years. Sure, the setting is evocative but, as many die-hard fans will tell you, it’s the high octane rush of hunting with friends that forms the true backbone of the franchise. That said, Monster Hunter Stories goes beyond your average spin-off and feels like a genuine attempt to expand this universe instead of simply trying to milk it. From the simple yet expanding battle system to its many ties with the core games, there’s plenty here for newcomers and grizzled veterans alike.
Full disclosure: I’ve actually never played a Monster Hunter game before. I do know that the RPG style of gameplay is a drastic departure from previous action-based entries in the series, and I happen to have a strong affinity for it. So longtime Monster Hunter fans may have radically different opinions from mine, but for what it’s worth, I’ve found this game to be full of wholesome fun. It’s hardly unique in gameplay and story, but what it lacks in uniqueness it makes up for in execution and presentation.
The Monster Hunter franchise is well known for offering precise combat, a high-skill cap for weapon mastery, and boss-battling hunts against giant monsters that can withstand massive amounts of punishment. Monster Hunter Stories combines those monsters and biomes with turn-based combat and a monster recruitment system to deliver an interesting spin on the series formula.
