With an expanded endgame, new difficulty tiers, and new story content, Worldslayer adds a lot to Outriders, even if none of the additions are mind-blowing.

“Outriders features stellar action and deep customization, but it lacks personality.”

The best time I had with the game was a ten-minute stretch that contained (a) no crashes or bugs, (b) the right level and world tier—essentially, a measure of enemy toughness—and (c) a harmony of tactics, sorcery, and gunfire.

At the end of the day, Outriders has a lot going for it. The gameplay is fun, I love the fact that there is more than enough loot to collect and spec out my characters. However, once you hit the end game, the game is essentially dead and that’s troublesome. Adding to that, the game still suffers from a number of issues including terrible online, random crashes, abilities either not working or working correctly and random crashing – Despite People Can Fly putting in overtime to get the game to a better place. For now, I’d wait for the game...

Outriders from People Can Fly (Painkiller, Bulletstorm) is the latest in a long line of 'looter-shooter' games, a new breed that was arguably spearheaded by Bungie with Destiny.

In many ways, Outriders is the perfect example of how a co-op looter shooter should be. The crafting and character build system undoubtedly raised the bar for any to come in the future. The combat is thrilling, unique, and a blast to play. The visceral action and superpowers, simply feel good.

Outriders is far from perfect. But a game doesn't have to be when it facilitates such a high degree of fun and interesting gameplay mechanics.

Developed by Painkiller and Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly, Outriders is the latest high-profile entry in the genre of co-op focused looter-shooters. Despite a rather rocky launch, impacted by server issues and a few major bugs, the end result is a rather compelling shooter, providing a surprisingly engaging story mode and enjoyable endgame content. However, more improvements may still be required for Outriders to fully meet its potential.

Outriders is the type of game where players get what they put in. For those who want a pick-up and put-down RPG with an emphasis on story, Outriders has that covered. For those who want hundreds of hours of gameplay in tense and adrenaline-pumping combat with powerful builds, Outriders has that covered too. Ultimately, the strength of Outriders is how it connects to its players and what they want out of the game, meaning everyone walks away feeling different about it, and that can only be a good thing.

Despite all of the ways that Outriders is stuck in the past, the moment to moment gameplay is so compelling that it’s impossible to say it’s not a blast -- especially with friends. It’s also remarkably expansive in its crafting and skill trees, with plenty of ways to customize your playstyle. I may not be that invested in the story, and this certainly isn’t that different from most third person shooters, but Outriders is well worth the time and effort. Even if there may be extra effort put in because of crappy server connections.

Outriders Review - Outriders is unapologetically Outriders. It balances the power fantasy with providing players a challenge, and weathers its flaws to offer an engaging gameplay loop.

Outriders is able to crack into the crowded looter-shooter genre, carve out a niche all while telling an entertaining story. Its character-building is top notch, its PvE gameplay is challenging and rewarding, and despite not being a live-service game, comes complete with end-game content that is more robust than most games that are trying to be live-service.

Outriders isn’t what I was expecting. In the lead-up to launch, it looked like one more Destiny-like looter shooter to toss on the pile. But while it does have looting, shooting and even online co-op, Outriders isn’t just another live service game. In a lot of ways, it feels like an experiment to blend looter shooter mechanics with single-player design and hectic, old-school combat. It doesn’t completely succeed, but enough of it works that I want more.

Outriders is an exciting evolution of the third-person shooter genre, with thrilling sci-fi powers and satisfying gunplay that makes nearly every battle feel fast-paced and gripping until the last enemy drops. The memorable planet of Enoch alongside a steady flow of loot with plenty of promising ways to mod and enhance your weapons and armor are both strong motivators to see the game to its conclusion and beyond, even when the story does little to intrigue and the server issues plague both the solo and co-op experiences. Additional mission variety could have helped keep the game feel fresh for a...

Outriders is one of those rare games where it not only lives up to expectations, but completely surpasses them. The game's multiple character classes and seeming endless amount of customization makes for a fresh and engaging gameplay loop long after you finish the campaign.

Outriders’ stellar gunplay and abilities make for a standout take on the cover-shooter genre, even though the overall experience is dragged down by server instability.

This story-driven looter shooter thrives as you see it play out. Once you finish it, you will ask yourself what else you can do without getting bored.

Outriders juggles some truly captivating ideas for the looter shooter genre, yet fails to deftly execute them. While it succeeds in combining traditional third person shooting with rewarding dungeon crawling, its messy matchmaking, repetitive mission design, and a dull sci-fi story hold People Can Fly back from delivering to their fullest potential.

Outriders has great ideas and those come shining through at various high points to spectacular effect, but it is pushing against the weight of inconsistent execution and unstable systems.

Outriders is a brash and bold looter shooter that will keep you entertained through the campaign and side missions, but its endgame content gets repetitive fast.

Still, in time, Outriders‘ bugs and server issues are likely to be eradicated, leaving its only real downside to be its poorly-told story full of loose ends. And even with that said, the narrative remains interesting and engaging – just nothing special. The real draw here is the captivating looter-shooter action that grabs you early on and simply doesn’t let go. You’ll love running into each combat encounter, commanding the battlefield like the Altered being that you are, before sweeping up any loot left by those you’ve slain. Then, back at camp, you’ll paw over your stats, improving and modding...

Outriders takes what previous looter-shooters have done well and adds its own RPG flair. The result is a game with a good story, fun gunplay and a staggering amount of build diversity.
Read Full ReviewFor its weird flaws, bugs, always online issues, obnoxious use of cutscenes, and b-movie attitude, Outriders is still mostly what I wanted it to be in execution and I think it's built for a wealth of future content and improvements that mean it's just going to get better from here. Whether I jump into the game on my solo character or team up with my friends, I know I’m in for a good, visceral, and rewarding time. I look forward to exploring Outriders’ missions and challenges, discovering how to make my Outrider a more powerful vehicle of battle, violently annihilating...

It’s been a rocky launch for Outriders, with server issues preventing players from progressing during most of the release weekend. Even when playing solo, this always-online experience has kicked me from missions and forced me to restart lengthy boss fights. And yet, I’ve come out on the other side with a smile on my face and an overall feeling of satisfaction. While Outriders may look like the mirror-world clone of Destiny or The Division or Anthem, it does just enough to set itself apart and come out with a win.

Outriders is a good looter-shooter at times that has some moments of greatness buried beneath a generic, if well-realized, sci-fi veneer.

Outriders' fast-paced combat and imaginative sci-fi setting make it a journey worth taking. For all its flaws at launch, this could be the start of something very special for developer People Can Fly.

I am having a blast gaining power and experimenting with builds in Outriders' Expeditions, but it almost wasn’t worth what it took to get here.

People Can Fly's inconsistent looter shooter isn't worth the ride.
Read Full ReviewIt doesn’t immediately appear to offer anything new, given its sci-fi premise is also about humanity looking for a fresh start, as your custom character is among the first to land on the lush alien planet of Enoch, which looks like something out of Halo or Horizon Zero Dawn.

Our relationship with looter shooters has been long and tumultuous. We’ve spent years mowing down monsters, dancing in the rain of treasure that erupts from their shattered bodies. Outriders is the latest milestone in this grim harvest, the newest always-online Arrow Examination simulation from Square Enix and People Can Fly. Don’t get me wrong! I love a good looter shooter, and Outriders delivers that core experience with effortless grace. I’m not as sold on the rest of the package, but rest assured: fans of well-crafted, fluid loot grind cycles are going to love this game.

While familiar and somewhat basic, Outriders has a lot of riveting action and a compelling gameplay loop that will satisfy people looking for their next looter shooter fix.

Overall, while Outriders doesn’t invent any new mechanics, the story is enjoyable, and the interesting classes, gear system, and world tiers make for some very challenging but fun gameplay. There were definitely a few hiccups on release day, and there are some easy alterations that can be made to make Outriders more accessible. But I would definitely recommend picking up this title.

Outriders has some of the most enjoyable gameplay I can remember in quite some time. If you’re reading or watching this a few months down the line then hopefully the issues with aiming sensitivity have been worked out, because once that is fixed this will be one of the better playing games, maybe ever. The story is ok, but the dialogue is horrendous. If you find it annoying just skip every cutscene and conversation you can and get back to that fabulously frenetic action as quickly as you can.
Read Full ReviewOutriders offers some genuinely great sci-fi action, alongside some really interesting world and creature design that I'd love to see more of. Its mostly satisfying take on RPG loot progression is well worth putting up with a lackluster story, a few clunky interfaces, and some lingering technical issues. Outriders is the good kind of grind - especially if you're into goo-ifying your enemies with a couple of friends.
