Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II won’t be for everyone. But if you are looking for a brutal continuation of a fantastic story that feels like you’re actually playing a movie, you’ll have a great time here.

Hellblade 2 remains the most technically impressive experience I’ve ever played through. Through the chosen medium of games, Ninja Theory tells a compelling narrative that, if you can put up with some rather archaic gameplay, will leave you deeply satisfied - and maybe just a little traumatised.

A visual and aural triumph, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II trades agency, freedom, and longevity to galvanize mood, atmosphere, and other, more cinematic qualities. By its very design, Senua’s Saga will polarize an audience rich with choice-driven adventure games. But by committing to its vision, Ninja Theory has crafted a thoughtful and haunting slice of violent opera - long on style, short on length, and certainly deserving of acclaim.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II showcases a level of visual prowess that blows anything we've seen so far out of the water and uses it to present a journey that, while short, excites from beginning to end.

Much like how a terrific performance can elevate a so-so movie, the technological achievements of Hellblade II are just enough to take the game to an above-average recommendation. The digital-only game being priced at $49.99 and also being available on Xbox Game Pass make it easier to recommend Hellblade II, despite its faults and short length. Even if there are only a few thrills, everyone deserves to go on a rollercoaster ride once in their life. Just remember that any ride, no matter how t...

We were all there, watching that 2019 Game Awards showcase. From out of nowhere, Microsoft decides to unveil their brand new console, the horrendously-named Xbox Series X, as well as a trailer for an upcoming game. That game was the sequel to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, the “independent AAA” darling that captivated us with its amazing visuals, brutality, and take on mental struggles. It’s wild to believe that initial unveil happened five years ago. Since then, we’ve seen it all. P...

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is the best-looking video game we've ever played. It sounds incredible, Melina Juergens acts herself inside out, and on a purely technical level this is just next-level stuff all round. However, we still don't feel as though extending Senua's plight into a Saga is a good idea. We remain unconvinced, and it's because this sequel feels like diminishing returns, as we had worried it might. It's not as vital or as unique in 2024, and it goes for bombast as a means of smoothing things over, resulting in a good game, an interesting eight hour romp...

The sequel to the award winning Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Senua returns in a brutal journey of survival through the myth and torment of Viking Iceland. Intent on saving those who have fallen victim to the horrors of tyranny, Senua faces a battle of overcoming the darkness within and without. Xbox Series X version reviewed. Senua's Saga: Hellblade II is intense, captivating, and breathtaking. From the moment I began to play, the beauty and quality of this game has enthralled me. It was difficult at times to even consider it 'just a game'. I could spend long periods just admiring the textures and use of light and color. Even in simple moments when you are merely wandering a path or exploring a hut, it looks like a movie.

I think Hellblade 2 is a beautiful piece of art that does some things right, but it’s not a fun game. I’d argue it’s barely a game. I can’t recommend spending $50 on a cinematic experience, especially when you could spend half that on some extraordinary indie titles that have come out this year or even less on a movie ticket and save yourself holding up on the thumbstick for 8+ hours.

Seven years of production resulted in a game that lasts only seven hours (more or less). Short? Yes, but I probably won't forget a single second of those seven hours for the next seven decades of my life. Hellblade 2 is a masterpiece.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is a fantastic game, but probably not for everyone. It appears to be a next-generation title in every aspect; impressive with its ever-changing Icelandic landscapes, realistic photogrammetry, lighting, particle effects, character movement animations, acting, and intriguing storyline. The combat is brutal, and the voices constantly heard by Senua sound as if we are hearing them in our own heads.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 comes almost 10 years after the initial game’s release in what, to many, is a surprising sequel. If you played the first, you’d know that it wrapped up Senua’s character arc with a complete, gut-wrenching story that felt self-contained.

Every one of the fights and combat sequences I played through felt like a boss-level face off in some way. It always felt like a true survive-or-die moment – all or nothing. It’s the only time in my entire gaming memory, that I can remember being so in the moment that I let out some sort of animal war cry during a particularly intense sequence. Sitting in the dark, late at night, headphones on, genuinely screaming as I swung my virtual sword – it is so utterly immersive that I felt like I was there.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is a stunning and immersive storytelling experience that really puts the player into the mind of its titular character. It’s even more narratively-focused than the first game (not to its detriment), with a bigger emphasis on how Senua sees and interacts with the world around her. The whole experience from start to finish has been beyond memorable.

I can’t emphasise enough how much I enjoyed the first Hellblade game. It was clear from the opening minutes of Ninja Theory’s 2017 title that every individual component of Senua’s Sacrifice was given just as much love and attention as it deserved.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is a brutal and mind-bending journey through Senua's eyes and ears once again, but this time through Viking Iceland. With new puzzles, tense combat scenarios, and evocative visuals, Hellblade 2's only downfall is it's occasional slow pacing and its technical problems.

I play video games for a lot of different reasons. Often it is to unwind from a long and stressful work day. Sometimes it’s a creative outlet or space to talk with my friends. Once in a blue moon, a game is so emotionally heavy and cathartic, it changes my life and forever stays with me. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, the incredibly anticipated psychological thriller follow-up to the 2017 hit, is the latest and most prominent example of this in my life to date.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice didn’t need a sequel. It had a clear story to tell, and it told it well with an artful (and tactful) execution of its mental health themes and a strong conclusion. But Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II builds a great case for itself by using the titular warrior’s growth to help not only herself but, for the first time, others around her, shining her in a fascinating new light. Refined gameplay and a jaw-dropping presentation make for a more wholly satisfying sophomore outing.

Haunting, confrontational, and deeply cathartic all at once, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is a stunning feat of video game art. Ninja Theory doesn't tiptoe around its heavy themes but welcomes them with well-honed empathy, tempered by an even keener creative edge this time around to deliver an unforgettable narrative adventure experience that's hard to watch, yet harder to turn away from.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 improves on its predecessor in numerous ways, making it a must-play for fans of dark, cinematic adventure games. Visually it's unparalleled, offering photo-realistic characters and environments, and its audio design is spectacular, too. It's just a shame that its combat gets repetitive all too quickly – but in the grand scheme of things, it's a small price to pay.

What made Sacrifice great wasn’t Senua’s severe psychosis, it was the pacing and breadcrumb storytelling that gradually built up to an epic conclusion. By comparison, Hellblade 2 only becomes more lost as Senua finds herself.
