SoulCalibur VI is an addictive and satisfying fighter, and more importantly the strongest the series has been in years

My first experience with SOULCALIBUR was back in the days of the Sega Dreamcast. Developer Namco had a tight relationship with Sony at the time and as a result Tekken was not heading the direction of the Sega Saturn or N64 no matter how badly we wanted them. SOULCALIBUR on the other hand somehow ended up as a Dreamcast exclusive. Finally, a Namco fighting game on a system I owned. It was great, dare I say even better than Sega AM2’s own Virtua Fighter 3. It looked better, played better and ...

If that’s you, I can’t blame you. You could buy a smelly armchair from Greg down the road for £50, and you’d probably get just as much adrenaline and challenge from getting that into your third floor apartment as you would fighting another terrifying Voldo to the death. But the moment this goes on sale, friend, the very moment it drops its guard – you slice open your wallet and let it bleed. Because you’ll never have a friend like Hooves.

SoulCalibur VI as a fighting game is all style over substance. While it retains most of its tactical combat it is easily the most user-friendly title in the series and for some longtime fans, that may be more discouraging than a return to form.

I still remember sitting down for the first time to play Soulcalibur on the Dreamcast and hearing Jeff Manning’s voice echo across the room. This is a larger-than-life series that deserves a lot of love and care from its creator: and with VI, it got it. The recent documentary that openly acknowledges the past faults of the series gives me hope that Bandai Namco is going to right the Soulcalibur ship.

Ever since the mid-'90s, Bandai Namco's Project Soul has been delighting fighting fans with their weapons-based 1-on-1 fighters. After years since the previous game, was SoulCalibur VI worth the wait?

On its surface, Soulcalibur VI is a reboot for the weapon-focused fighting series. It eschews the slew of new characters in Soulcalibur V for a retelling of the events of the original Soulcalibur, and brings back most of the iconic characters in classic attire. Within that nostalgic pitch, however, is a combat system that deftly builds on its predecessors, with several smart improvements that give players more ways to dig into a fighter that’s equal parts intricate and flashy.

The SoulCalibur series’ tagline has always a been “A tale of swords and souls eternally retold,” and that seems a fitting saying for SoulCalibur VI. It’s a game that feels altogether familiar but different at the same time, and it’s the biggest and boldest that SoulCalibur has been in years. The six years since SoulCalibur V has clearly allowed the team to re-examine the series, and double down on providing a robust fighting game experience.

With a massive amount of characters and more on the way in the future as DLC, Soulcalibur VI could have a thriving community behind it for many years to come. It has a bunch of competition from other 3D fighters like Tekken, but the game has enough content to stand on its own and really push into the FGC scene.

Soul Calibur VI has the heart and soul of what makes a great fighter great. However, Reversal Edge is a mixed bag, and some presentation elements lack visual investment. Regardless, Soul Calibur VI is the complete package, accommodating to newcomers and veterans alike.

SoulCalibur VI is a fantastic looking entry in the series, but beyond that feels like something of a missed opportunity. The core combat remains as vibrant, weighty and enjoyable as ever, but the Reversal Edge adds in an element of chance that feels at odds with what most fighting games set out to achieve. The two interminably dull story modes don’t help either, with players left to rely on the the straightforward arcade and online modes for their kicks.

For someone with little Soul Calibur experience before now, I feel that Soul Calibur VI can be a pretty good starting point for someone to the series.  The tutorial in Mission Mode will help you learn the basics and you can always look up more advanced moves and techniques for any character at almost any time.  Add in the Mission and Story modes and there's a lot to do beyond just fighting several random CPU opponents and calling it a day.

The weapon-wielding Soul Calibur series has existed in its own little corner of the fighting game genre ever since the original arrived on the Dreamcast in 1998 – a bit like that one kid at school who would spend every maths lesson stabbing his pencil case with a compass.

The best SoulCalibur VI of recent generations, with an accessible but tactically deep combat system. But while the single-player options are much improved they’re still far from perfect.

SoulCalibur VI is a statement game from Project Soul that does almost everything right. Smart gameplay refinements, a ton of content, the return of the original cast, and excellent teaching tools makes this the best SoulCalibur in years and prove that the soul still burns 20 years later.

The biggest opponent of the creators of Soulcalibur VI was the severely limited budget. However, it is clear that they did what they could to get the most out of it, creating the best installment of the series in years.

Fighting game franchises have been making somewhat of a resurgence in the past little while, with games such as Tekken 7, Injustice 2, and more recently Dragon Ball FighterZ coming into the forefront. In addition to these, Street Fighter V continues to be popular and titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Dead or Alive 6 are on their way as well. It comes as no surprise then, that at The Game Awards 2017, the announcement of Soulcalibur VI by Bandai Namco was met with much fanfare and excitement.

Most fighting games feel alien to new players almost instantly. Just moving around in a game like Tekken, tapping down or up once for a side step, holding a bit longer for a walk, double tapping for a jump, dashing… It can feel complicated and alien to anyone outside of the established Fighting Game Community, and it can be a struggle to settle into. With its 8-way run system founded years ago, the weapon based brawler Soulcalibur has managed to be one of the most popular and approachable fighting game series there is.
