Like a good dad joke, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin may not be for everyone, but it grew on me and in the end, I loved every minute of it.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is a very engaging and entertaining game. It has a lot of technical and graphical issues when you want to play it but you don’t have to notice as you are focused solely on killing the agents of Chaos.

Stranger of Paradise is a good game, but it had the potential to be a great game. Its self seriousness backfires to a genuinely endearing degree, but also leaves the story poorly fleshed out and possibly hard to follow. The combat may be fun, fluid, and visceral, but issues with the PC version should make players look to other platforms.

If you're curious about what Final Fantasy would look like as a Souls or Nioh-style action game, Stranger of Paradise is a solid effort. It's just a shame that it's bogged down by its oddball narrative choices and its cumbersome loot system, which makes the total package such a mixed bag. I suppose it's the nature of this chaotic beast.

You don't often see reimaginings of 8-bit RPGs but here's Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin and it's pretty cool albeit a bit rough.

Stranger of Paradise is a mechanically rich and satisfying action RPG marred by poor balancing and performance issues.

Oddity ensues in Team Ninja's take on the original Final Fantasy.

When Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin was revealed last year, strange is certainly a word that it conjured in many gamers’ minds. A prequel to Final Fantasy, starring a gruff, no-nonsense original character whose defining trait revolves around killing Chaos, with a dark and edgy tone far removed from the idealistic high fantasy of the original game? Developed by Team Ninja of Ninja Gaiden and Nioh fame, of all people? While such a premise and pairing are certainly unorthodox, th...

Enjoyable Souls-lite combat can’t make up for the tedious loot system and laughably bad storytelling, in this misconceived Final Fantasy spin-off.

Team Ninja’s Final Fantasy spin-off is awkward, ugly, dumb, and irritating. Yet, it also has this unwieldy, compelling charm.

There's a half-decent time to be had bashing your way around Stranger of Paradise's dungeons, but routine level design, rough edges and messy narrative delivery stop the experience evolving into a compelling adventure. Despite its efforts to create ordered systems, chaos has the final word.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin seems to prove that the Final Fantasy franchise can thrive in the action game scene with this first franchise venture from Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo. The title isn't a true home run, but it is an exciting adventure that expands the franchise lore in a unique direction. The Final Fantasy Job system is as interesting and exciting as ever and adds a unique twist on the action game format as players grind through each challenging dungeon and fill in all the Job talent trees one by one.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is an incredibly fun game, filled with bombastic combat, which also expands on the existing lore of the original Final Fantasy.

The first four minutes of the ludicrously titled Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin set the scene perfectly. There’s a cutscene of a dark knight annihilating a platoon of soldiers while he carries an unconscious princess on his shoulder. Then you’re in a boss battle against a multi-headed creature without context or justification that begins with a man shouting “Bring it!” and ends without resolution. Next there’s a scene of a man walking through a cornfield while Frank Sinatra’s My Way plays only for it to cut out right before he sings “My Way”. And then, finally, a tutorial where...

Stranger of Paradise is one of “those” games - a scuffed diamond that's a joy to play, yet has unmissable imperfections. However, while annoying, a poor story and bland visuals don't diminish its punchy RPG action, nor its rewarding web of character customisation options. Needless to say, we’re pretty eager to see how Stranger is received by the Final Fantasy fandom.

Sometimes Square Enix gets weird, and when it does, we get games like Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin. Yes, it is a Team Ninja-developed alternate take on the plot of the original Final Fantasy, and yes, that is as crazy as it sounds. It’s a game that’s far from perfect, but it’s not afraid to be flawed. In a world where many major games are designed by committee and optimized to appeal to the broadest audience possible, this AA title with spunk feels refreshing.
Read Full ReviewStranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is undoubtedly one of the more off-kilter entries in the Final Fantasy franchise but one whose flaws become less glaring as players progress through the story. The impressive number of Jobs, each with its own level progression tree, makes for a deceptively immense amount of gameplay depth that would be all the more enjoyable if the level design wasn't so linear and repetitive. Still, Stranger of Paradise offers hard evidence that Final Fantasy can st...

If you watched any of this game’s trailer and thought “I’m into that!” then you absolutely will not be disappointed. Strange of Paradise is a bizarre experience with a kitschy appeal, leaning into its assumed cult status with gusto. While it may not be perfect, Stranger of Paradise is one of the most fun Final Fantasy spinoffs in a very long time — and easily one of the most surprising things that Square Enix has published in even longer.

If you were to find me a decade ago and tell me that Square-Enix wants to make a prequel to the first Final Fantasy, I might call you crazy. If you added on that the main character wants nothing more than to kill Chaos and listen to an off-brand Limp Bizkit when he doesn’t get his way, I might even wonder where this crazy fan fiction came from. Nevertheless, somehow all of this is true. Square-Enix has partnered up with Team Ninja to build off the Nioh framework and turn the original tale of the Four Warriors of Light into...

Take its unfortunate performance issues in your stride – which will hopefully be ironed out by Team Ninja post-launch – and you’ll have a hell of a lot of fun with Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. Its story may be ridiculous and not particularly easy to follow, but you’ll enjoy trying. And besides, the real draw here is the combat, which is not only highly entertaining but so, so deep thanks to the brilliant job system. This is a new type of Final Fantasy game, one that puts action at the front and centre, and it’s a blast from...

When it was first announced, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin caught my attention – and not just for its oblique name. The idea of a Final Fantasy/Dark Souls mashup retelling the story of the original Final Fantasy game was intriguing, especially given the main character was shown to be a guy in a tshirt and jeans, as opposed to a fantasy destined one. How would that all be explained?

That initial Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin reveal trailer, back at Square Enix’s E3 2021 presentation… boy oh boy, that was something indeed. A lot of people cringed. Others were puzzled, who could blame them? Some were revolted with the idea of an uber-violent Final Fantasy spinoff starring Eminem’s long lost brother. I, on the other hand, was stoked. I have no idea why, but the damn thing clicked with me right away. It looked like it was going to be either something compl...

Stranger of Paradise is a peanut butter and chocolate combination of Final Fantasy XV and Nioh. The beauty of it is that you don't even have to be a fan of Final Fantasy 1 to enjoy Stranger of Paradise. The story explains everything you need to know and anything you bring into it from previous knowledge is just extra. The combat is just spicy enough that you can feel like a powerhouse, but lets the players somewhat tweak the difficulty to their own desires if they'd rather face a tougher challenge.
