Mr. X Nightmare is a quality addition to an already quality game. You can feel the care taken to bring in the new characters without wrecking the balance of the game, the fantastic soundtrack, and a great new mode that’s positively addicting and well-made.

When the credits rolled, I felt better, gunning for action, as if life were a thing to rage through with a smile on your face. How often does that happen?

Whether you are a veteran of the franchise or not there is a fun game here to be had by all. Plenty of characters to unlock and pick from, 2 player online co-op, 4 player offline co-op and a couple of different modes to venture into after you complete the story. Feel like you need more of a challenge? Arcade mode expects you to do the entire story in one sitting with one life just like the "good old days." The art style is magnificent and the satisfaction you get when you do start to feel ou...

For those who owned a Sega Mega Drive in the 90s, chances are your fondest memories were not of a speedy blue hedgehog but battering thugs with a mate on neon-soaked streets.

Streets of Rage 4 is everything I could have wanted in a sequel to such a venerable series that I’ve always held in such high regard. It’s clear that both Lizardcube and Guard Crush get it. They managed to create a sequel that belongs right alongside its predecessors despite having to manage fan expectations and the ever present nostalgia that can inflate people’s memories of the old games, particularly after some three decades and change. It’s a prime example of how to modernise a bygone genre without abandoning the spirit of it, all while capturing the feeling of what made it...

Lizardcube, Guard Crush and Dotemu have done such meticulous work it almost feels like the beat 'em up is relevant again. As if the genre never died. It's a triumph that feels arcade perfect in an era where all the arcades have long since been bulldozed.

Streets of Rage 4 is a must for any beat ‘em up fans, especially those with fond memories of the original trilogy. The fighting is great, the visuals are great, and the soundtrack is great. Lizardcube and Guard Crush have managed to capture the essence of those classic games and upgrade it for the modern age.

All-in-all, this is the most fun I’ve had with multiplayer these past few months, and I’d recommend this game to both newcomers and Streets of Rage fanatics alike. Not only is this a heartfelt throwback to the golden years of couch co-op, but it’s also an extremely well-balanced and impeccably crafted romp through a city in need of saving.

It took 20+ years, but I’m happy to say that Streets of Rage is back and then some. The gameplay is reminiscent of games of the past while bringing in new mechanics that push the game further. Thanks to the insight from the developers, there’s still plenty to do after the game has been beaten, which ensures players will be picking up the controls for a long time. I couldn’t have asked for a better follow-up to the classic series. All that’s needed now is for the online components to be fixed and this is will be perfect in my...

Streets of Rage 4 has one of the best soundtracks of any game this year so far, as every track is an absolute banger. Each track perfectly fits the stage it’s set on, and even under all the violent sound effects, every song will quickly dig its way into your brain. And if the soundtrack isn’t to your liking, you can always swap to the “retro” soundtrack, which is all songs from the first two Streets of Rage games, which are all-time classics themselves. My only complaint is that I wish the cutscenes had voice-acting, but even that isn’t a...

The main game is a short one, neatly wrapped up in a few hours. However, an Arcade Mode and Boss Battle Mode can be unlocked, along with a Battle Mode for those looking to fight with a frenemy. Of course, Online Play is also an option.

Streets of Rage 4 is the very best the series has ever been. Its hand-drawn graphics breathe new life into Wood Oak City and its inhabitants, the soundtrack is outstanding and the combat feels better than ever. Lizardcube, Guard Crush Games and Dotemu have managed to completely modernise the look and feel of Streets of Rage, expanding on the experience without losing sight of what made the original games so popular to begin with – and the handful of additions made to the action here serve only to enhance the classic core gameplay, resulting in one of the best side-scrolling...

Meet Streets of Rage 4 on its own terms and you'll discover a sometimes cheap, yet often rewarding revival of a once dead franchise. The soundtrack is stellar, art design fantastic, animations superb, and controls precise. But, if you expected all the former sins of the genre to be absolved after 26 years you'll have to look elsewhere.

Video games have largely abandoned the humble beat-'em-up, a sub-genre superseded many times by faster, more thrilling action titles. Getting Streets of Rage 4 at this point feels a bit like your estranged but fondly remembered uncle showing up on your doorstep 26 years later with a beard and a redder face. It's great to see you, Uncle Streets of Rage, but where do you fit into our lives in 2020?

For anyone hoping it would bring a little modern fluidity to a long-stagnant genre, you might have to moonwalk upwards from this one. But for Ragers, it's a sturdy score-attacking blowout to while away some hours, perfecting your flying knees and enflamed uppercuts, arguing over who deserves the trash salad.

Saying that I was looking forward to Streets of Rage 4 is a mammoth-sized understatement. This franchise as a whole is much bigger and way more important than you could ever imagine if you, like me, grew up in Brazil, also known as “the distorted reality in which Sega has always managed to beat Nintendo”. Anyone who had a Mega Drive (yes, that’s how we’re calling it in this review) or a friend who owned said console has played a Streets of Rage game at least once. The combat was great...

Simply put, this is the return that fans have been waiting for. Streets of Rage 4 delivers in so many ways that the $24.99 price point seems more than reasonable with all the included content, even with the short story mode. It may prove to be overwhelming for those unfamiliar with what it brings to the table, but you can’t deny how much love was put on the screen for beat-’em-ups and this franchise in general. If you can take the heat, you should absolutely jump in and send a signal that...

Streets of Rage 4 delivers the greatest hits of the classic series and is at its best when played with at least one friend. If the primary focus was delivering a traditional Streets of Rage experience with a modern coat of paint, it absolutely succeeds. But while it layers on a few new and interesting mechanics, it’s still a very conservative update to the quarter-century-old format that feels like a slave to the past.
