Tekken was already a big deal before Tekken 3 came along, but the third instalment rocketed Bandai Namco's series to truly awesome heights. It was both a revolutionary 3D fighting game and a commercial juggernaut, helping define an entire console generation.

At its core, Tekken 7 manages to prove that the series still has a place after 20 years, showing no signs of slowing down. Newcomers will find their way into the game quite easily, and experienced players will be able to jump back into it and find most of their favourite characters ready to go and familiar to play with. But while the game does a lot of things right, some long-time players will find the omission of modes or characters a little jarring. The PS4 version of this game was played for the purpose of this review.

When you hop online you’ll find your typical Ranked, Unranked, and Tournament modes typical of any fighting game. You can also set up lobbies to host multiple players or spectators and also search for those lobbies. I will say that joining one of these lobbies can be a bit of a pain if you suddenly want to leave because you won’t be given any option of exiting the lobby until after a game starts; this leads to you having to completely shut down the game and restarting it. Something I do wish they’d change is that when you’re waiting to match up with a player you’ll be tossed into a room with an AI to pummel on; it’d be really helpful if I could access a character’s move-list and display the combos on-screen while waiting so I could practice a specific combo while I’m there.

Tekken 7 delivers everything that the fans would expect from the series with just enough modifications to the fighting mechanics and a nice array of new and returning fighters to test their mettle against in both single player and multiplayer match-ups.

What TEKKEN 7 does isn’t all that revolutionary, no pun intended. However, TEKKEN 7 takes a chance by adding some things that may prove to extend its life in not only the Fighting Game Community but also in the casual market as well. A well-crafted story, tournament mode for organizers to utilize and a variety of fighters to choose from, TEKKEN 7 stakes its claim as one of the best fighting games to come out in a year where fighting games are stuck in the public eye.

Objectively, Tekken 7 is most likely not the best fighting game out there currently. Netherrealm Studios are doing a too good job for that with Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2. However, given that in my childhood the Tekken series was omnipresent, it is my personal King of the Iron Fist. It is not completely understandable for me, why there was so little effort put into more varying game modes. I hope the explanation is not mainly to sell them via the upcoming DLCs. I don’t mind too much ab...

Bandai Namco isn't reinventing the wheel with Tekken 7, but it's been long enough that a solid entry in the franchise feels fresh. The new additions are small in scope but deliver in a big way, making this easily one of the best entries in the series.

Tekken 7 is more of a sidestep than a total knockout for the series. Its broken online modes and sparse single player content leaves something to be desired, but those looking to throw down will appreciate its depth and complexity.

The latest installment of Bandai Namco's fighting franchise plays great, but also makes some questionable choices.

While Tekken 7 doesn't offer a lot of varied game modes, it excels with the ones that it does feature. The fighting features enough new additions and familiarity to appease experts, while remaining as accessible as ever for newcomers. On top of that, the numerous customization options ensure that there's always something worth fighting for, in-between trying to prove dominance online. The Mishima Saga carries on the series legacy in the sense that it's a mess of a story, but even that spotlights how well Tekken's visuals have adapted to the new generation of hardware. With an iron fist, Tekken 7 proves that it deserves to stand with the best in the genre.

For nearly 20 years TEKKEN has dominated the fighting game arena, and with its latest instalment, TEKKEN 7, things aren’t looking to be any different. There’s no denying that we’ve all played at least one fighting game before and TEKKEN would most likely be in a lot of gamer’s top 10 lists. For me, TEKKEN has always been a staple and somewhat of a landmark game in my gaming life, so it’s definitely one of my favourites.

While Tekken 7 does sort of go back to its roots and rights the wrongs of some of its predecessors (mainly Tekken 6) it does leave a little to be desired from a story perspective and the rage system feels more like an adaptation of systems from other fighters instead of a new system to help make the game feel unique in the genre.

It has all the right moves, but Tekken 7 is now punching slightly above its weight.

You know what they say; great fighting games are like buses, you wait for ages for one and then two of them come along at once. Tekken 7 blends great fighting, wonderful historical content and wealth of options into a great, if occaisonally flawed package.

Tekken 7 truly is a hallmark, a fighting game crafted with obvious affection. It strikes a fine balance between accessibility to series newcomers and retaining much of its technical traditions. The soundtrack is an electronic treat, and while the story can at times seem a bit cliche, the fact that it never takes itself too seriously lets it bring in a tremendous amount of flexible character customization. Its dedication to the details helps push it into the position of my favorite fighting game of 2017 so far.

It's good to have Tekken back again. Tekken 7 successfully makes the jump from the arcades in Japan, with a cool customisation suite, a decent selection of modes and superb fight mechanics. You should probably go buy it now.

I was pleasantly surprised with Tekken 7, and will be keeping up with the meta and pro scene for the first time in years. While Harada and his crew could have easily given us a little more to do long term other than chase more treasure, it doesn’t feel like grinding in the slightest given how fun it is to play.

Some fighting games take themselves too seriously, but others? They put you in control of a giant panda, then let you square off against a demon on top of an active volcano.

May 31, 2017 Read Review

Tekken 7 at its core, is a pure fighting game. It’s a game that has been around for decades and has proven that you can teach old dogs new tricks. With its multitude of features and game modes, Tekken 7 is here to stay. It’s a long-standing game that old and new gamers alike will be able to enjoy. A game that will forever stand the test of time.

For better or worse Tekken 7 stays grounded to its arcade roots. The console fighting game scene seems to have changed in the meantime.

Tekken 7 has been a long time coming. After releasing the game in arcades two years ago, Bandai Namco has been building up to the home version since, adding new characters and improving polish and balance. The final product is a strong contender, offering a mostly smooth online experience, gorgeous visuals, and clever twists on a combat system that flips between methodical and frantic in a heartbeat. But in other ways, Tekken 7 feels like a missed opportunity and (ironically) a rush job.
