A Plague Tale: Requiem doesn't drastically alter the foundation set by Innocence, but by iterating on its strengths as a character-driven fable within an oft-ignored historical setting, Asobi tells yet another tale to remember.

Asobo Studio’s A Plague Tale: Innocence captivated players in 2019 with a surprisingly deep, dark storyline that no one expected out of a brand-new IP. Its gloomy, gritty atmosphere paired well with the grim tale of Amicia de Rune and her little brother Hugo, both struggling against overwhelming odds to escape the Black Plague, known as the Bite. It’s a bleak yarn steeped in terrifying moments as two young children struggle to survive in the rat-infested French countryside. Now, it’s been given a sequel in the form of A Plague Tale: Requiem, a follow-up that’s every bit as great (and...

A Plague Tale: Requiem takes what made the first game good and improves upon that. If you can handle the constant stealth sections, this game is for you.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is an engrossing tale about a pair of siblings trying to survive the horrors of the Inquisition and hordes of hungry plague rats. It boasts a strong linear narrative with engaging characters and challenging stealth puzzles. Strange character animations and limited combat hold it back from being best in class.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is the sequel to the second game I ever reviewed. In my now-cringeworthy review, I came away from A Plague Tale: Innocence with an unexpected attachment to its two main characters, siblings Amicia and Hugo. Their heartbreaking quest to find peace in a bleak vision of Medieval France was the best part of the game, even when the story around them wasn’t always up to the task. Three years later, we finally get to see what Amicia and Hugo got up to after they got on that ...

When it first released in 2019, I was surprised to find how quickly A Plague Tale Innocence grabbed my attention. It wasn’t something I imagined myself investing in, but the unique combination of an overwhelmingly horrific plague besieging a country (how sheltered we were) contrasted against the deep interrogation of a brother and sister’s relationship evolving as they themselves changed, provided a unique experience that no other game was even tackling.

In 2019, Asobo surprised us all with a game that found a way to utilize AAA tropes in the pursuit of a compelling narrative. Three years later, Asobo have not only bested that prior effort, they might well have crafted one of the best follow-ups not just of this year, but of the past few years. It's hard not to understate just how much more refined, fleshed out and expanded in scope A Plague Tale: Requiem both looks and feels. But it's because the game is firing on so many cylinders where the former surprise of prior comes flooding back...

Neither of these nit-picks detract much at all from what a Plague Tale: Requiem achieves though, and that's providing an incredibly evocative adventure through 14th century Europe during The Black Death. Asobo's sophomore effort is seriously impressive, delivering a balanced adventure that knows exactly when to mix things up, whether that be a introducing new story beat, a fresh location to explore, or a different combat option to make use of. Requiem is exactly the kind of new AAA narrative adventure we've been craving for a while on Xbox Game Pass, and we can't wait to see what this developer...

A Plague Tale: Requiem is a gorgeous, thrilling, and emotionally resonant adventure that had me gripped from start to finish, and it delivered one of my favorite gaming experiences of 2022. A Plague Tale: Requiem is available on October 18 for $59.99 on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch via the Cloud, and Xbox Series X | S and is also a part of Xbox Game Pass.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is better in seemingly every way than Innocence. The environments are bigger, the story is engaging, there’s more tools at Amicia’s disposal, and even Hugo gets a bit of an upgrade. Having him tag along at almost every juncture can get a little annoying, but then so does a real-life younger brother. Even the DualSense’s inclusion makes sense, and the “speaking” vibration enhancements should be experienced at least once. Overall, whether you played the original or not, you owe it to yourself to check out A Plague Tale: Requiem during this spooky season, and beyond.

A Plague Tale: Requiem’s trump card is the variety of gameplay sequences between which it alternates. At its best, it spices up the original’s stealth action-adventure formula with new ways of eliminating foes or holding rats at bay. At its worst, it has you slogging through tedious or frustrating stealth sections.

Choosing not to reinvent the wheel in regards to its by-the-numbers stealth gameplay, A Plague Tale: Requiem instead goes above and beyond to present greatness in its overall package, delivering an enthralling story, magnetic characters, tense action setpieces, and stunning visuals that rank among the generation’s finest. It won’t bewitch everyone, but for devoted fans of rats and resilience, A Plague Tale: Requiem absolutely delivers.

Sequels are difficult to get right, but Asobo Studio has created a wonderful follow up to Amicia and Hugo's journey. A Plague Tale: Requiem effortlessly expands on the premise of the original by fleshing out a more in-depth gameplay experience to cater to various playstyle while maintaining an engaging narrative filled with colorful yet unpredictable characters. The game is unfortunately only held back by performance issues and icky bugs.

Requiem is a very well-made game. The story, graphics, and gameplay all make for an enjoyable experience. But the overall length makes an otherwise solid game feel tedious. The journey of Hugo and Amicia is heartwarming, and heartbreaking, but also fairly basic. The performances of the two siblings and the story itself are compelling enough to make up for the most glaring flaws, but the padded runtime hurts the pacing. At its worst, the game feels boring. Yet the shining moments of A Plague Tale: Requiem push through its problems, leaving a satisfying sequel, rats and all.

I think I speak for everyone who has previously beaten A Plague Tale: Innocence that a sequel was more than warranted. It’s not like the first game ended on a massive cliffhanger, but there was enough room for a sequel to be created in case the first game became a success, which it did. At the same time, the fear of a sequel not being as impactful, just reusing tense moments and enemies from the first game, was real. I was excited for A Plague Tale: Requiem, but was also a bit worried. It h...

Going into A Plague Tale: Requiem, developer Asobo Studio’s follow-up to 2019’s A Plague Tale: Innocence, I was prepared for the usual jump in quality and scale that most sequels embrace. I underestimated just how significant that leap would be, though. Calling Requiem a standard sequel is a disservice; Asobo has created a Plague Tale epic. It feels Odyssean in scope and storytelling prowess. Although much of it came together for me by the end of my 20-plus hour journey through medieval France, the game feels strained by its sheer size, especially in its first half. Still, I’m more impressed...

And so what? I’m not a huge fan of how bulky the environment feels at times, and the walking sections can become tiresome, but the truth is, Requiem had me engaged from start to finish. Sure, the game has its flaws, and it’s not a very malleable experience, but that doesn’t stop it from being a good time all the same. At its heart, A Plague Tale is a narrative-driven atmospheric experience. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

A Plague Tale: Requiem outdoes its predecessor in many ways. Its story, for example, manages to be even more engaging and touching, while numerous gameplay enhancements make it a deeper, more varied affair. It’s just a shame that its first quarter isn’t better paced, relying too much on you manipulating rats with light, and that its combat sections just aren’t fun at all. Add in a myriad of performance issues and bugs, and you have a game that somewhat squanders its phenomenal potential, but is still very much worth playing.
