The Assassins Creed franchise is in a desperate need of a break, as well as a complete overhaul. With the previous entry in the franchise Black Flag we did begin to see some much needed changes and Unity does continue to bring some of the desperately needed changes. Of course with these changes does come their problems, namely it could be challenging for long-time fan of the franchise to jump into this entry with an overhaul to the combat system among other things, though it also is the changes that put this game on the much needed path the franchise...

Unity may have the intention of being Assassin’s Creed’s next-gen reinvention, but it’s remarkably faithful to its roots.

Unity is an impressive technical achievement despite its issues, and it is certainly a significant step forward for the series as a whole. The difficulty of combat encourages use of the overhauled stealth system, perhaps signalling a shift towards a real focus on stealthy gameplay in the series, which is certainly exciting. And on top of that, it’s utterly gorgeous almost all the time.

If you can put up with the stuttering performance and some comically ridiculous bugs (my favourite was an assassination target moon-walking backwards into my confused assassin’s cavalry sabre) then there’s a decent Assassin’s Creed experience to be found in Unity. The fact that it’s never more than decent makes those glaring technical issues much, much harder to excuse. Despite some good ideas and an entertaining tale, this isn’t a revolution for the franchise. Considering the hype ...

Brighter than Unity's ambitions, perhaps, since the sacrifices made on the story front are clear. But it's still an impressive sandbox, and does its setting justice. Rough edges or no, Assassin's Creed Unity is a technical step forward, and likely a title every fan who's made the leap to next-gen will want to see for themselves.

Many of the same flaws that hounded previous AC games are still here, but there's more to enjoy for anyone willing to look past them. The story is genuinely engaging, filled with actual twists that turn the AC lore on its head, as well as a good love story between two captivating characters. Paris is also a sight to behold, feeling grander than any of the series' previous settings. The ability to stroll through the game at your own leisure, even stopping to take in a co-op session from the beginning or in-progress, is also a welcome one.

At first, I didn’t like Assassin’s Creed Unity much. As a longtime fan of the franchise, the early hours chafed against my sense of what an Assassin’s Creed game should be. Unity is a dramatic departure from what came before in controls, combat, navigation, progression, and difficulty. However, the more I let go of the idea of what it should be, the more I could enjoy it for what it is. Unity is a fresh start, and while many new features lack polish, the game is massive, the story is sophisticated, and the missions are open-ended. It doesn’t get everything...

Assassin’s Creed Unity leverages the new-generation consoles to add spectacular new sights and successful co-op multiplayer, but in doing so, it’s created some substantial new problems instead of solving the series’ most persistent ones. The scope is stunning, the customization is satisfying, and the multiplayer touches upon some really ambitious ideas. But the lack of a strong main character or interesting take on the Assassin’s Creed universe costs it momentum and excitement, and the persistent control problems are still a thorn in its side. The first truly new-gen Assassin’s Creed game is a gorgeous, entertaining, and successful proof of concept...

Assassin's Creed Unity does a lot of things right. A LOT of things. The things it does wrong though, are incredibly noticeable. Some players will undoubtedly play and never see a glitch or a crash, but its far more likely that they'll be plagued with issues. Everyone will see framerate problems though, of that there is no doubt. Whether you can get over these glaring flaws or not is going to probably be the main thing that affects your opinion. We fought through the overall unpolished finish of the product, and we were glad that we did so, but this...

If Ubisoft fixes the glitches, Assassin’s Creed: Unity will be a much stronger game, even if the ceiling is a bit lower in general. Unity‘s potential is not as strong as some of the better entries in the series, but it’s good enough for existing fans to continue the journey.

Assassin's Creed Unity is indeed the prettiest version of Assassin's Creed yet, getting back to basics and focusing on the Assassin part of Assassin's Creed.

Unity’s predictable narrative and constant technical quibbles mar what would otherwise be a solid entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Come for the side-content and co-op, but don’t expect any important revelations here.

Although it may be the first installment made specifically for the brand new consoles, Unity remains a traditional Assassin's Creed game. The setting and atmosphere is cool, but some of the best ideas are marred by bad checkpointing and a story where the historical elements often feel like an afterthought. Assassin's Creed Unity is a solid action game, but a disappointing follow up to Black Flag.
