Very early you are introduced to Igniculus, a rain drop looking fire fly. Igniculus can be controlled by you at the same time as you control Aurora or separately by a local co-op friend. Igniculus is invaluable to your quest, lighting dark treacherous paths, gathering the fuels for your health and magic but most importantly, his battle aids are vital to your success.

“Child of Light is a beautiful adventure through a whimsical fantasy world, but its story lacks emotional resonance.”

A beautifully-presented and surprisingly deep RPG that is deserving of everyone’s attention.

Child no more.

On the whole, Child of Light is an easy recommendation for those who didn’t catch it the first time round. The ‘light’ in the title sums things up nicely – you get game mechanics usually reserved for massive RPG epics in a concise package that’s as beautifully refreshing as when it was first released. It’s a shame to see framerate hitches – however occasional they may be – but they’re not enough to cast a shadow on this delightful adventure.

It took longer and was more brutal than a rap battle between J.R.R. Tolkien and George R.R. Martin, but Child of Light has finally made it to the PlayStation Vita. Those of you who have been desperately waiting to see what all the fuss was about can, after almost three months, join Aurora on her rather poetic quest to save the world from a dark witch hell bent on revenge. The content itself is still as fantastic as it ever was, but double-dippers beware: this handheld port isn’t without a few problems of its own.

Child of Light is an artist's RPG through and through. Combat is more thoughtful than intimidating, the story is at once archetypal and clever, and the game's visual and auditory flare is truly something to behold.

Child of Light is often a lot of fun, but it's simplistic nature gets in the way. This beautiful game is also hampered by bad writing and a number of irritations.

Ubisoft’s Child of Light is an experiment of sorts from the company known best for churning out Assassin’s Creed every year. Based on the same UbiArt Framework that classic platformer Rayman uses, Child of Light is a side-scrolling, 2D (but gorgeously rendered) turn-based RPG about a girl who dies and winds up trapped in the fantasy world of Lemuria, striving desperately to get back to her grieving father.

Ubisoft Montreal might have made its name with Far Cry 3 and Assassin’s Creed games, but its latest effort is the polar opposite – a pretty 2D fairytale adventure.

Gorgeous platforming and a smart JRPG battle system form the solid groundwork of this whimsical fairytale.

The story starts with the princess Aurora who, upon falling ill, is whisked away into a fantastical realm called Lemuria. Here she finds that her only way of returning home is to find the Sun, the Stars and the Moon to help the downtrodden Lemurians defeat the evil Queen Umbra. It’s the ultimate battle of the light against the darkness. Along the way Aurora is joined by a rather diverse cast of characters that all bring their own unique skills and quirks to the story. For the most part that’s all you’ll really want to know about the story itself otherwise you’ll spoil it. Joining you right from the get go is your firefly sidekick Igniculus. Your constant companion Igniculus proves to be indispensable in both the platforming and RPG elements of the game. From lighting your way in the darkness to blinding creatures so you can sneak past you’ll be happy to have him at your side.

Every aspect of Child of Light has an unmistakably artisinal, organic feel to it. None of it feels focus-tested, or designed to appeal to the broadest possible audience; rather, it always comes off as exactly the expression its creators intended. The artwork on display is stunning, and the combat is constantly engaging, and the characters openly defy genre convention. But perhaps the best thing I can say about Child of Light is that I was often unsure as to whether I was headed in the direction I was supposed to, and I never once cared. I just wanted to fly to every corner of the world, take it in, and smile.

Players attracted to the visuals and style may be alarmed to find the combat so frequent (and the writing uneven), but anyone even mildly interested in JRPG combat should give this game a look. Issues aside, it's a clear sign that even big-budget studios can stray from the beaten path with success. And there is no doubt many players will fall in love with its blend of whimsical storytelling, engaging combat, and an attention to detail that deserves particular appreciation.

Child of Light is like a blast from the past, capturing the essence of a classic JRPG from the genre’s heyday and refining it with a fresh coat of modern polish. The art design and audio is gorgeous, the combat is simple and fun, with no ultra-complicated busywork to get in the way, and the characters are charming. It’s a brief visit, and one that suffers from an occasionally repetitive formula, but the beautiful art, smart battle system and endearing storytelling make it absolutely wort...

Child of Light came on the radar with high anticipation, and it doesn’t fail to deliver. It isn’t necessarily the type of release gamers expect from Ubisoft, as they are renowned for making blockbuster titles. In all fairness, however, it never feels like a whimsical, small, schemed RPG from any direction. From start to finish Child of Light is a delight to spend time with, and it’s without a doubt the best platforming experience I’ve had in a long time. For such a stunning experience, $14.99 is a minimal price. It’s a must for anyone who wants a break from our regular gaming experiences.

Child of Light stands as a wonderfully realised venture into unfamiliar territory for Ubisoft - and a welcome reminder that the industry's major players still have the creative flair to push beyond the lucrative safe ground that they so often favour to create well-crafted, highly-polished gems such as this.

Ubisoft Montreal has conjured a fairy tale world that you'll enjoy spending time in, a wondrous RPG adventure with its own line in rhyming. Child of Light is a glorious game, short and yet sweet, memorable, gorgeous; an incredible feat. And for the small price you'll be paying, Child of Light is definitely more than worth playing. So buy it.

Child of Light is a joy to behold, with the tale of Aurora and Lemuria very well told. The way the whole experience has been crafted is nothing sort of fantastic, and this could turn out to be a classic. The story, the characters, the battle system, the art, and the music all shine. This is a game that wears its heart on its sleeve while bringing something fresh to the landscape; it’s quite divine.

April 28, 2014 Read Review

Regardless of your age or feelings toward the genre, we can't recommend Child of Light highly enough. Ubisoft Montreal has created a concise and inviting RPG that somehow manages to retain more than enough complexities to ensure a deep, rich experience for players of all types – to say that this balance is impressive would be an understatement. With exciting mechanics, a gripping combat system, and an imaginative world that's equally ominous and elegant, Child of Light constantly fires on all cylinders, sure to leave an impression that's hard to shake.

Child of Light will satiate pretty much everyone but the most hardcore of RPG fans, and even then, they’ll find plenty of enjoyment. There are a few minor issues here and there that hold it back from instant-classic status that could be enhanced in a sequel or future work, but regardless, Child of Light is a noble effort from Ubisoft Montreal, and another win to put in the studio’s diverse portfolio.
