Forza Horizon 6 Review - Enjoy The Ride

Forza Horizon 6 is an excellent, high-quality racing game that finally gives players the chance to explore Japan with their favorite cars. Playground Games crafted an amazing open world full of fun content and exciting gameplay, all of which is backed by a stellar soundtrack and incredible direction on sound design. Forza Horizon 6 is a reminder that open-world racing games are still capable of greatness.

If there is one constant from Xbox’s recent (and very shaky) output of titles, is that Forza Horizon is not only their most critically acclaimed franchise, but possibly THE most critically acclaimed racing franchise of all time. Yes, I said what I said, Gran Turismo followers. The mixture of open world exploration, phenomenal physics, accessibility options and collectathon elements resulted in what I personally consider to be the perfect racing game formula. I only played solo during the review period, but once this game is out for everyone, the amount of community content will be fantastic. Even with a busy month of game releases, players should make time for FH6. If you’re drifting away from Xbox, then Forza Horizon 6 is a great reason to jump back in.

Forza Horizon 6 is as good as you hoped it would be. Japan has quickly become my favorite location, and the in-game map really does it justice. There's so much to see and do that even after spending the past week with the game, it feels like I've barely scratched the surface. While again, there isn't much in terms of new ideas or innovation, the Horizon series didn't need it. There's already a well-established formula in place, and Playground Games did well to continue delivering one of the best racing experiences you'll ever have with Forza Horizon 6.

It’s not without faults, but it spells an end to the dark patch the racing series has been through over the last half-decade.

I am not a car person – I drive a 1999 Mitsubishi Lancer that carries less resale value than the laptop I am writing this review on. Yet, the Forza Horizon series has been an immense source of joy for me since I first gave the Australia-set Forza Horizon 3 a bash several years ago.

Playground Games are masters of the arcade racer. Forza Horizon 6 is the latest in their globe trotting series, this time bringing its neon-soaked motorsport festival to the stunning climes of Japan. That in turn brings a new flavour to the racing action, with anime inflexions, cute food mascots and more of a focus on the iconic stable of Japanese car manufacturers, meaning that the Forza Horizon formula might be familiar, but still manages to feel relatively fresh.

Forza Horizon 6 continues Playground Games’ stellar streak of best-in-class racing games. The rich setting of Japan offers an abundance of biomes and areas to race through, while providing a unique car culture to highlight. While the racing itself is still excellent, some oddities in the way the game is constructed and a few uncompelling additions keep it from pure racing perfection.

A celebration of cars, even to a fault.

As you'd expect, Forza Horizon 6 is the biggest and perhaps best entry in the series yet. Its recreation of Japan is absolutely brilliant too, with some truly scenic locations to visit and race across. It's just a shame that Playground Games plays it a little too safe, with this essentially feeling like Forza Horizon 5 and Forza Horizon 4 before it – but with a new map.

No matter how tight the turns and how twisty and winding the roads, Forza Horizon 6 is content to just stay the course.

Forza Horizon 6 lands the Horizon Festival in Japan with all the polish and ambition you'd expect from Playground Games, delivering one of the most beautifully realized open worlds in the series' history. The dual campaign structure adds a new layer of depth. The Discover Japan content helps sell the setting in a way that feels deeper than surface level tourism. Fans will be right at home here. Forza Horizon 6 is, in almost every meaningful way, more Forza Horizon. If you've loved it in the past, you'll love it again. Frankly, it just doesn't get much better than this.
