Hogwarts Legacy is the Wizarding World game that fans have dreamt of for years. It offers a dense and rich open-world to explore complemented perfectly by a surprisingly robust and engaging combat system unlike anything else. While the story does live in the shadow of its predecessors, and managing gear can be repetitive, Hogwarts Legacy is a truly magical experience and utterly bewitching from beginning to end.

Hogwarts Legacy delivers on the promise of creating your own story within the beloved Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The experience is occasionally blighted by bland open-world padding, and it's not the most visually dynamic game, but vibrant combat, a deep progression system and an astonishing recreation of the iconic magical school make it hard to put down.

“Hogwarts Legacy will likely please die-hard Harry Potter fans, but its tired open-world design lacks imagination.”

Hogwarts Legacy offers an enjoyable open-world game for both those familiar and unfamiliar with the wizarding world. There are dozens of hours of entertainment to be found in the game and quite a few enjoyable storylines to indulge in.

Hogwarts Legacy is an absolute monster of passion and creativity in a world that is all about creativity. Great combat mechanics and a unique open world with many interesting secrets hidden around makes playing this game an absolute treasure.

Almost perfect if not for the nitty-gritty. If it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.

Hogwarts Legacy is an engaging spectacle, providing a stunning playground full of imagination and wonder.

The bottom line is that Hogwarts Legacy is fun. Exploring the school, Hogsmeade and the surrounding hamlets is rewarding. The spells feel like they've come alive from the pages of the books. Combat is exciting and very challenging on the higher settings. But it's not without some faults. Glitches are encountered frequently, and some parts of the game can be frustrating. On PS5, Hogwarts Legacy looks and runs great. If you're really into the world of Harry Potter, or open world games in general, you are going to love Hogwarts Legacy.

The coming of age of a new witch or wizard, Hogwarts Legacy offers more immersion to a uniquely magical world than a player could hope for. From flowing combat and a moving story to fun characters and a bevy of creatures, there is something mystical hidden around every corner.

Hogwarts Legacy fulfilled a long-standing childhood dream of mine: the dream of receiving my Hogwarts acceptance letter as a kid, and waving a wand around to do all sorts of cool magic tricks. Bad fanfic or not, it's hard to ignore the amount of pure, unbridled joy I got out of the game simply by being present in its immersive world. Hogwarts Legacy gave me the rare opportunity to be transported back to a time that was harder in some ways, but also simpler in many others. The fantasy was sweet and lovely, but also devastatingly fleeting. Then again, perhaps that's really all I could've ever asked for.

“I’ve been dreaming of this day for a long time. I can’t believe I’m here,” is the protagonist’s response to being asked how they’re finding Hogwarts at the start of the game. To me, it sums up my experience with Hogwarts Legacy. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone wasn’t just the first novel I ever read, it was what drove me to learn how to read. I kept up through all the books, saw all the movies, and still regularly visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal...

Hogwarts Legacy sets a new benchmark for video game adaptations of novels and films. Although it has some notable flaws, it has numerous moments that leave you spellbound.

Avalanche Software had a mighty challenge when it came to adapting the Wizarding World into a game. Unshackled from the books and films, the studio needed to craft a compelling story, engaging combat and recapture the magic that captured people’s attention in the first place. For the most part, the studio has succeeded with Hogwarts Legacy. By following the structure of the Potter books, Hogwarts Legacy is able to build up a series of characters and a story that are gripping despite not quite sticking the landing at its end. Gameplay is fast, frantic and fun, though it could use ironing out in any potential sequel. Most importantly, it’s extremely engaging; a good thing since there isn’t much else to do. Though the game does capture the magic in terms of its look and feel, elements like learning spells, potion making and side quests come off as too formulaic and somewhat compromise the feeling the setting aims to portray. Hogwarts, though, is an absolute triumph, one that will easily keep players exploring to find every secret. Hogwarts Legacy isn’t perfect, but it’s successful in capturing the magic of the franchise and setting a solid foundation for any future games set in the Wizarding World. Hogwarts Legacy thankfully follows in the footsteps of Harry Potter, not Fantastic Beasts.

The best game in Harry Potter history, but a hard one to be excited about.

The game is mid at best, and its real-world harms are impossible to ignore.

Hogwarts Legacy is Harry Potter-flavored comfort food — it is as crowd-pleasing a game as you’re likely to find. It’s ironic, then, that it releases in controversial circumstances, as author J.K. Rowling’s persistent hounding of the trans community casts a dark shadow across the franchise. Legacy has not been unscathed, with there being calls to boycott the RPG so as not to give her more money or relevancy. Amid this ongoing debate — or perhaps because of it — Avalanche Software’s take on the Wizarding World is so plainly benign and forgettable that, if you didn’t know about Rowling’s history, you couldn’t possibly guess that this is a controversial release.

Harry Potter and his friends may not star in Hogwarts Legacy, but the magic of the series shines through in a game that is as enchanting as it is immersive.

Hogwarts Legacy is the Harry Potter video game players have been asking for. Given some time, I can see this game shining as brightly as a wand casting Lumos on the Steam Deck.

The sights and sounds alone make Hogwarts Legacy the dream Harry Potter game fans have been longing for. There’s an intriguing mystery to unravel, though you’re bound to spend most of your time exploring a wealth of side content, visiting virtual landmarks and roleplaying as a Hogwarts student. That said, it’s more successful in being a sandbox teeming with nostalgia rather than a stand-out action RPG in its own right, let down by gameplay foibles and spellcasting combat that quickly slides into repetition.

Avalanche has created something truly special with Hogwarts Legacy. It succeeds at being the dream Harry Potter game that many fans were hoping for, and if nothing else, it creates a rock-solid foundation for future Wizarding World games to be built upon. Hogwarts Legacy lives up to the hype, and we can confidently say it's the best thing to come out of the Harry Potter franchise since the original books and movies.

Hogwarts Legacy borrows a lot of design choices and ideas from other open-world titles, and yet, it creates a truly unique product, unlike any title in the genre, with a true focus on world-building rather than non-stop combat encounters. It’s a game that should be experienced, even by those who aren’t Potter fans at all.

The collectibles in Hogwarts Legacy are as plentiful as the areas that house them. At the start, players will have invisible Field Pages, Moth Mirror Puzzles, and Dice Door challenges that provide cosmetics. This seems simple enough, but as the story progresses players will unlock the ability to find hidden flying keys that unlock a special House Chest, Merlin Challenges to increase gear capacity, specialty Eyeball Chests that can only be opened once players earn the Disillusionment charm, Moon Statues that can only be found at night, and so much more. Fast travel points in the form of Floo Powder are all over the world and available right away, but they seem useless at the start, when exploration is the main way of leveling up - and Hogwarts Legacy is so successful at sculpting its environments into evolving narratives and adventures.

For good and for ill alike, Hogwarts Legacy feels like the ultimate chance to explore and tour the Wizarding World from the ground up. In its best moments, it's reminiscent of something like Elden Ring or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, inviting players to just go and explore a larger world, discovering who they want to be and learning more about the setting in the process. Even when the game slows down, it feels like a fun, open-ended tour through a well-constructed fantasy world, w...

Content-rich and competent, if a little uninspired, Potter fans will enjoy Hogwarts Legacy's faithful recreation of its universe, but it brings little of novelty to the open-world RPG genre.

Hogwarts Legacy is the first of this year's big hot releases. Did it rightly take first place on the list of the most anticipated titles and is it a potential GOTY candidate? Here's our opinion – Revelio!

It felt like Hogwarts Legacy was always going to struggle to live up to the hype, but somehow Avalanche Software has managed to deliver an absolutely fantastic open world adventure that will surely go down as comfortably the best game based on the Harry Potter franchise so far. If you've been following its progress for a while and were keeping your fingers crossed for good reviews, we're pleased to report that it's definitely been worth the wait.

Hogwarts Legacy promises to take fans inside the halls of Hogwarts in a 1:1 scale experience for the first time. This premise is something that Harry Potter fans have spent years hoping would one day be realized, making it one of the most-hyped games of the decade, and a tall order for Avalanche Software — a team most known for its ill-fated Disney Infinity series.

Hogwarts Legacy is a compelling fantasy-RPG packed with stunning scenery, memorable characters and fantastic combat. Not only is it a brilliant love letter to fans of the Wizarding World, it excels as a game in its own right, so even non-Potter fans will find themselves immersed in its great story and characters.

Hogwarts Legacy is the most definitively accurate and exciting wizarding world adventure people could hope to experience, short of getting a real-life invitation to Hogwarts. With hours of content and a wealth of wizarding wonderment, you’d be hard pressed not to enjoy yourself to an impressive capacity.

Hogwarts Legacy is an absolutely magical video game, one that is packed with awe-inspiring moments full of mystery and wonderment. Come for Hogwarts itself, a magic school oozing with secrets to behold, and stay for the combat, the engaging story and the frankly astonishing Room of Requirement.

Avalanche Software and Portkey Games have done an impressive job of creating something original within a much-loved franchise. Hogwarts Legacy is the closest any of us are ever going to get to actually attending Hogwarts, and what a magical experience it is. It’s clear that it’s been created with love, and the attention to detail here is phenomenal. It’s not without its issues, of course, but there’s few that get in the way of the overall experience. It looks gorgeous, it’s a joy to play, and being a wizard is just about as fun as we’d always hoped it would be.

I feel like a kid again, reliving every magical moment I’ve ever had with the franchise, screaming and jumping with excitement during every minute of my playthrough. I strongly recommend playing Hogwarts Legacy, as it’s easily an early frontunner for easy Game of The Year.

February 6, 2023 Read Review

With its stunning recreation of beloved Harry Potter landmarks and thrilling combat, Hogwarts Legacy definitely has its moments. Sadly, it tries to do too much all at once, and never quite settles into a comfortable rhythm, or leverages the player experience against the established laws of the wizarding world

Hogwarts Legacy offers nothing more or less than a video game experience in which you can live your Harry Potter fantasies without dire consequences. It's a game driven by nostalgia, with a male protagonist whos voice even has an uncanny resemblance to that of Daniel Radcliff.
