The more focus a player can give to Metal: Hellsinger, the more it shines. When it all clicks, a flow builds that can only be achieved by this style of rhythmic combat. It takes some powerful music and grafts it onto the iconic Doom formula. The result is that the player feels like they are in the middle of a perfectly choreographed movie or trailer. It's certainly challenging, especially on higher difficulties, but if players can think of it as less a shooter and more a rhythm game, it really opens up. Lack of enemy variety and short gameplay aside...

This rhythm FPS has a bone to pick with damnation… and a few to break.

Metal: Hellsinger is an absolute head-banger of a game with amazing tracks to accompany each level, but it's rhythm-based gameplay does little to stop it from constantly reminding you of the games that inspired it, games that are fundamentally better executed in their core gameplay. It's repetitiveness and lack of any innovation doesn't make it a must-play game for shooter fans, but it's music does for any heavy metal fan.

Metal: Hellsinger is exactly what I hoped it would be – a balls to the wall, headbanging, visceral experience that nails the aesthetic and feel of the premise. The soundtrack is superb and perfectly suits the setting and narrative, and everything is carried along by an interesting and well-voiced narrative. Even if you are not a big fan of metal (and why the Hell wouldn’t you be?) this is an excellent rhythm shooter that absolutely slays.

Metal Hellsinger is a refreshing take on traditional demon killing, Doom shooting, and rhythm based heavy death metal music. It features some truly immersive and satisfying gameplay mechanics, especially when you click with the beat and blow off demon heads while rocking out to the beat of System of a Down. However, the game's difficult learning curve and lack of variety may be off putting to some.

Doom comparisons aside in style and tone, Metal: Hellsinger is one of the most unique, refreshing video game offerings I’ve seen in a while thanks to how it caters to fans of metal music, and its approach to rhythm mechanics. We could use more heavy metal-focused rhythm games, and I hope to not only see more games like Metal: Hellsinger in the future, but to see more from the talented developers of Metal: Hellsinger, The Outsiders, as well.

Two of my favorite games of all time are Rock Band and DOOM. I love rhythm games to death, and I also love loud, dumb, fast-paced, and ultraviolent retro shooters. I would have never thought a team of developers would be crazy enough to try to mix both genres into one title, but a bunch of insane Swedes decided to bring this ludicrous idea into reality. Metal: Hellsinger is, on paper, the perfect game for a person like me. Let’s see if the devs managed to deliver on their promises.

I wanted to like Metal Hellsinger, and I think it has a lot of potential, but the incredible soundtrack can't save this from the crashing and performance issues on Steam Deck.

With vocals from the likes of Trivium’s Matt Heafy and System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, the music of Metal: Hellsinger will go down a treat with metal fans. The fact that it’s married with gameplay that is equally impressive, then, should speak volumes. This is a unique first-person shooter that not only uses music to drive the action, but also uses it as a reward. And with both music and gameplay of such a high standard, only those who absolutely abhor metal need not jump in.

There isn’t anything like Metal: Hellsinger. Diehard metal fans will no doubt fall in love with it instantly, but the overall experience is satisfying and compelling enough to serve as a gateway into the metal genre for newcomers. It perfectly embodies the passion, energy, and emotion that all metalheads share.

I’m a big fan of metal. I’m a big fan of video games. I’m also a big fan of shooting demons and ripping them apart. Metal: Hellsinger combines all these qualities into one tight package I never knew I needed. Clearly, people like me were on the minds of developers The Outsiders while concepting Metal: Hellsinger. Look at it from one angle and it appears as just another demon-blasting shooter romp, but look from another angle and Metal: Hellsinger is a creative, engaging, arcadey experie...

Metal: Hellsinger has absolutely kickstarted the boomer-shooter, rhythm FPS genre. Of the handful of issues the game possesses, they're all overshadowed by its insane amount of entertainment value. There's no doubt that The Outsiders have created something extraordinary, something that absolutely needs a sequel. Although very challenging and not without its critiques, its an extremely satisfying experience through and through.

Metal: Hellsinger knows precisely what it is from the second it begins: a love letter to fast-paced first-person shooters, especially Doom, and a tribute to metal music and the culture surrounding it. It’s a no-frills shooter that asks, “What if you had to blow bodies to pieces to the beat of a metal album made by genre greats?” It excels at answering that question. It’s not perfect – the bosses are uninspired at times, and it could use an extra dash of variety in combat design – but my criticisms mattered little to my overall enjoyment of my 11-hour playthrough....

Metal: Hellsinger is an easy game to recommend—the music’s great, it feels really good to play, and it looks great. The only real caveat to all of this is that, if you’re not a fan of metal music, Metal: Hellsinger might not have much for you. While its combat is great, the music is what truly elevates it from being just another boomer shooter.

When it comes to music, are you like me? Do you go through periods when, for weeks or months, all you listen to is one style of music? I’m kind of like that with metal. I’ll wake up and think, it’s a Mastodon kind of day, and I’m hooked for the foreseeable future. The Outsiders’ new rhythm shooter Metal Hellsinger is probably going to trigger my next metal phase. Not that I’m complaining about it.

Metal: Hellsinger seamlessly blends tight first-person shooter gameplay with a fantastic soundtrack and rhythm mechanics that will constantly keep you on your toes. The game’s eight levels progressively get more challenging, as you slay your way through hordes of demons and bosses. The original soundtrack is one of the best metal soundtracks I’ve heard ever and it makes the rhythm-based gameplay that much more enjoyable. While the short runtime is disappointing, it’s only because I wanted so much more time to experience it. Combat feels tight and is surprisingly good coming from a small indie studio, although the bosses leave...

Metal Hellsinger is a slick and addictive rhythm FPS with style and attitude to spare. With shooter action that's heavily reminiscent of Bethesda's 2016 DOOM reboot mashed together with superbly well-realised rhythm game aspects that enhance the core combat experience, this is a fiendishly satisfying arcade game that sucks you right into its twisted hellscapes and refuses to let you go. Get ready for some super-sweaty Heavy Metal vengeance.

Metal: Hellsinger is exactly as in-your-face and easy to pick up as a rhythm FPS featuring death metal should be. If you’re even remotely a fan of metal music and first person shooters, you’ll have a great time with the six or so hours that it takes to reach the game’s credits.

The game’s difficulties, customization and challenges make for high replayability, further enticed by the global leaderboards available for each level. I still think the game could have a bit more unique content, with not that many levels and weapons to choose from, but the mid-range pricepoint and the massive skill ceiling to aim for present more than enough meat ultimately. Metal: Hellsinger takes great inspiration from some of the most exhilarating shooters of our era, offering a compelling rhythm-based action game with great style and fantastic soundtrack. It’s not all that unique, with games like BPM: Bullets Per Minute already...

In the end, Metal: Hellsinger can't sustain much of a story, and the one it sets out to tell is far too ambitious for the scope of the actual game. Most people won't be coming to Metal: Hellsinger for the story, though. They'll be coming for a game with the aesthetics of 2016's DOOM, a soundtrack headed up by a slew of metal legends, and hours of rhythmic fun. Where those factors are concerned, it doesn't get much better than Metal: Hellsinger. And who knows? Maybe Metal 2 will have a better ...

I previewed Metal: Hellsinger back in May, and I said that while it had the markings of a fantastic game, it had several stability issues that prevented me from having a good time. Metal: Hellsinger’s infectious blend of rhythm game and first-person shooter elements gripped me all the way through its story mode and beyond, despite its mostly disappointing boss battles. Its roaring metal soundtrack ebbs and flows around how well you deal death to Hell’s denizens, constantly pushing you to do better.
