An exercise in extracting value from its players rather than providing it, the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is what happens when this industry is at its worst.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign is more throwaway blockbuster than challenging look at conflict, but its mission variety makes for an enjoyable few hours. And even with the disappointing Spec Ops, a wealth of entertaining multiplayer modes makes this a worthwhile addition to any Call of Duty fan’s collection.

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has an outstanding campaign, and the multiplayer will have you itching to play just one more game over, and over, and over again.”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare serves up the freshest take on a stale formula in years, with a new engine and revitalised multiplayer mode that takes full advantage of a finely-tuned weapon customisation system and some welcome changes to ballistic mechanics. While Spec Ops fails to deliver much long-term attraction, the story mode proves there’s plenty of justification for a narrative element in a modern shooter. Free maps and updates bring everyone onto the same page in multiplayer, but Infinity Ward's take on the battle pass template still needs some work.

Modern Warfare is the most astounding Call of Duty I've played since World at War. But they haven't gone as far they could, in the campaign especially. The multiplayer is outstanding, as always, with the slightest modifications eking out big results. But in the game's attempt to shock and awe, I don't think they're quite there yet.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare almost brings the franchise back to its roots with a meaningful campaign that includes memorable characters and a horrifying depiction of war, but falls short when it comes to the traditional multiplayer. New modes like Gunfight and Realism are highlights and the core game still feels as good as ever, but it won’t save you from getting continuously spawn camped.

Infinity Ward was never going to recapture the magic of the original Modern Warfare, but this is still their most memorable Call of Duty game of the past decade. This is a bold new spin that’s uneven in places, but proves there is still room for innovation within that core template.

Overall, the campaign is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s strength. Its well-designed missions make for excellent weapon testing grounds and feature a slew of interesting mechanics that wouldn’t work anywhere else. Some of its best parts come about because of the secretive nature of this war, and that includes some heavy moments that are generally done well. The multiplayer, meanwhile, maintains its smooth gunplay and has great weapon customization to go with it, but those don't matter when having to play on this disappointing batch of launch maps. Still, Modern Warfare’s gorgeous new Realism mode, the large-scale Ground War, and...

Modern Warfare truly is an awesome attempt at revitalizing the Call of Duty franchise, especially just ahead of the next console generation. The game is a solid foundation for the future of the franchise, and if you’ve been burnt out on the franchise until now, it’s worth it to hop back in for 2019. Just don’t bother with Spec Ops and you’ll have a great time with the rest of the game.

I’ve spent a week since launch putting together our CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE review. I’ve played the game on public servers, ranking up alongside the common gamer with the latest patch installed. Now, after having completed the campaign, grinding through a big chunk of multiplayer, and experiencing what’s currently available in co-op, I’m finally ready to share and justify my thoughts.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has real potential, but a lackluster campaign and frustrating design decisions make for an experience we've seen done better before.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's Spec Ops mode is a big disappointment, though fans will find plenty to love about the campaign and multiplayer. After the disappointing Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty: Ghosts, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare feels like a return to form for Infinity Ward, and it will be exciting to see what the studio produces next.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is another fantastic shooter from Infinity Ward, but it's still just a Call of Duty game. If you're a fan of the heights of the franchise, you're sure to have a great time. However, for those hoping for a more daring and innovative leap, there's not much new to see here.

Overall, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare makes a very solid case for renewed interest in the franchise. By playing into the nostalgia of the original series' characters, amping up the stakes in single player and bursting the door wide open for the multiplayer community, Modern Warfare re-asserts itself as a major player in the genre.

The action is fast-paced, the time-to-kill is still low (especially compared to the big shooters currently prominent in games, such as Apex Legends), and the story, while a welcome return, is still classic Call of Duty campaign fodder. If you didn’t enjoy Call of Duty previously, Modern Warfare’s soft reboot would do nothing to change that.

It has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for Activision and Infinity Ward ever since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was revealed back in May. There was outrage over the rumored use of White Phosphorus and anger over the child soldier’s sections. The internet was also fuming over the Spec Ops mode being made a timed exclusive for PS4 owners and there was some controversy over rumors you would be able to kill unarmed civilians. It seemed as though Modern Warfare just couldn’t escape the heat.

The classic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare trilogy remains one of the best trilogies in gaming history. To reboot it after only eight years was a risk, but Infinity Ward has done their series proud. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare takes the classic formula and gives it a modern-day spin that not only brings the gameplay and design up to today's standards but also respects the past. The campaign successfully hones in on uncomfortable topics to tell a modern war story. Well developed characters help convey uncomfortable truths, though cartoonish villains hinder some of that impact. Multiplayer is an excellent...

Modern Warfare is familiar in name, but its content carries a different tone and flow than we’ve come to expect from the annualized Call of Duty series. Developer Infinity Ward takes big chances in both multiplayer and the single-player campaign, and while some of the ideas hit with deadly precision, others fall flat.

Infinity Ward made a lot of bold claims this year in the run up to Modern Warfare’s release. It’s a reboot of a classic favorite franchise, so it should feel fresh but nostalgic all the same. It’s darker and grittier than ever before, but also won’t be gratuitous. It utilizes new tech that doesn’t seem like it should be possible until next gen, yet it works on a standard launch PS4. For all of the pre-launch talk surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it manages to coalesce when get your hands on the game.
