More than felling each Visionary, however, and piecing together the history of Blackreef, I relished uncovering more about Colt.

Deathloop’s a solid shooter with room for creativity in how you approach the individual districts. But its ham fisted linear handholding of a single viable sequence of events to actually break the loop greatly diminishes the novelty of the experience and reduces the game down to what feels like a reskin of the Dishonored games.

One year later and Deathloop is still very much Deathloop. It's intriguing, boasts strong production values, and offers an interesting mix of immersive sim and roguelite mechanics. Unfortunately, this is all bogged down by repetitive gameplay, a so-so PvP mechanic, pacing issues, and iffy AI. It's worth a try, but your mileage may vary.

Not quite a misfire but while the action is highly entertaining this time-looping adventure squanders much of its premise on disappointingly straightforward objectives and a curiously tame portrayal of unchecked hedonism.

Honestly, I just can’t recommend Deathloop enough to all you Xbox Series owners out there. It’s a fantastic game, that leans heavily into the identity crafted by Arkane Studio when they released Dishonored nearly a decade ago. It’s clever, fun, witty, and pure chaos at its best, what’s to hate about that?

Deathloop is the best game Arkane has ever made, which is saying something. It is a brilliant culmination of their learnings over the years, and I absolutely love it. World-class writing, world-building, and story are matched with fun gameplay, great performance, and one of the smartest game worlds I’ve ever seen. It’s finally out on Xbox and it’s on Game Pass so do yourself a favor and play this near-masterpiece.

Video games are inescapably intertwined with iteration and do-overs. It’s written into the technology that builds them, the development practices that craft them, and often the very rules governing how they work: win-lose, trial and error. Some games have tried to mask this artifice in the service of more naturalistic storytelling. Deathloop embraces it. Up to a point.

With Deathloop, developer Arkane Studios clearly aims to incorporate lessons learned from Dishonored, Prey, and earlier games with a new invasion element that adds multiplayer to the mix. It’s this latter element that I was most interested in playing and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s the game’s standout feature. I’ve waited a week since the game’s launch to write this review, putting in the hours with the general public to properly assess how invasions play out.

In many ways, Deathloop feels familiar to previous Arkane Studios titles, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What makes it shine is not just how it offsets this familiarity by introducing a time loop element but, more importantly, how it skilfully avoids frustration by constantly making you feel like you’re learning something new.

Sorry. Is that not a fancy enough intro? A little blunt? It’s just that the longer we’re sat here writing a review about Deathloop, the less time we’re spending actually playing it, and all we want to do right now is play it. Forever. Ad infinitum. You know… like the very premise of Deathloop itself.

Deathloop is a game that will be talked about for a long time and one that will undoubtedly be in the running for Game of the Year 2021. Its well-crafted systems, gripping narrative threads and quasi-choose your own adventure style gameplay make it the best Next-Gen title so far.

There’s a hell of a lot to love about Deathloop. It’s seriously slick; taking control of Colt as he runs, slides, sneaks or climbs through an environment feels incredible. It’s a game that entrusts players to engage with its systems in their own way, and while you’ll never be at a loss on what to do, you won’t have your hand held, either. It’s fast, it’s smooth, it’s incredibly good fun. Chances are, you really won’t want the loop to end.

Deathloop is the kind of game that will get in your head and stay there even when you’re not playing. Colt is a great protagonist, the intricate environmental design is a dream to explore, and the loop system keeps things fresh and offers so much replayability. Simply put, Deathloop is fantastic.

Deathloop is awash in retro 60’s style but at the cost of real substance. Clunky gunplay and only a handful of special abilities hold what could have been a great game back. The time travel plot had promise but untimely goes unrealized.

There are multiple mystery stories at play in Deathloop beyond Colt and Juliana’s. All the Visionaries have secrets, and secrets make them vulnerable. These playfully noir-ish tales prove instrumental to the success of the overall premise. Games often struggle with impactful revelations, but Deathloop does such a superb job of bewildering and frustrating you that when the threads start to come together, it's intoxicating. You start the story with absolutely no idea what’s happening and by the end you’re damn near omnipotent. And best of all? You feel like you really earned it.

Deathloop was a surprise announcement during the E3 conference in 2019. It was originally set to release in 2020, but thanks to COVID-19, it was delayed well into 2021. I’m a massive fan of the Dishonored series, so hearing that Deathloop was developed by Arkane Studios and utilized the Void engine was all that I needed to hear. This week, after more than two years of waiting, we finally get to enjoy Deathloop. I am as enamored by it as I am overwhelmed and it will be a long time before I ...

Taking the currently trending time loop concept and adding some signature Arkane flair — DEATHLOOP is the new bombastic release from Bethesda Softworks and Dishonored developer Arkane Lyon that’s ready to absorb you into its stylistically paradoxical world. With novel ideas and a colourfully charismatic design, DEATHLOOP feels instantly distinctive and noteworthy. But do those novel ideas always work or does the game collapse in on its own time looping paradox?

Deathloop is a paradox, where time is in both infinite supply and quickly running out. Protagonist Colt Vahn is stuck in a timeloop, desperately trying his best to get off the gleefully nihilistic island of Blackreef. The rules of breaking the timeloop seem simple: kill eight targets within 24 hours. Paradoxically, this feat is an intricate clockwork of planning, preparation, and execution that feels impossible at first. It all culminates in one of Arkane Studios' best games to date.

Deathloop is in a weird spot. It isn't as good as Dishonored, but I also don't expect to see another game in the series. If you want to support the studio or need a Dishonored fix, this will help...but honestly, the game isn't that fun.

Deathloop is another incredible title from Arkane, once again putting their skills in developing both quality stealth and first-person action to good use and blending it with time loops in order to create one of the year's most memorable games. This is thanks in part to a clever twist that encourages exploration to its fullest in order to find Blackreef's best mysteries and the most creative solutions to its puzzles. Playing Deathloop. Arkane Lyon’s ambitious new murder mystery shooter, it’s hard not to indulge in a game of spot the influences. There’s the studio’s own Dishonored 1 and 2, of course, plus a dollop of the BioShock franchise. Add in some Quentin Tarantino stylistic extremism, classic 1960s James Bond-like villains, Austin Powers humor, and of course, Groundhog Day’s repetition. It sounds ridiculously derivative, but Deathloop manages to be one of the most engaging and original shooters I’ve played in years.

Deathloop is still signature Arkane in terms of exemplary immersive-sim design, reminiscent of BioShock and Dishonored, but it also puts a giant smile on your face each and every time you play. Quite whether that's enough to see it succeed at a mainstream level remains to be seen, but there's no doubt it's another stellar title on the resume of an esteemed studio. It might even be its best.

There are so many things I love about Deathloop it’s hard to limit myself in gushing about it. It’s not just some of the best design I’ve seen out of one of my favorite studios, Arkane has also incorporated fun elements from games like Dark Souls and Hitman into Deathloop to make it altogether its own deliciously unique offering. AI can bumble a bit and the cost of failure can be high, but Deathloop still delivers a visceral and engaging murder puzzle that demands thorough investigation and gritty gunplay down to its final twists and turns. Colt and Julianna’s rivalry...
