Fallout 76 is not a perfect experience. Bugs, monetization and the player's lack of an impact on the in-game world can put a damper on the experience. The game's story can sometimes conflict with established lore and themes, which will frustrate dedicated long-time fans. However, players who approach Fallout 76 with an open mind will more likely than not be rewarded with a memorable experience, and one that will hopefully carry the load without ever feeling over-encumbered until Fallout 5 ...

As a result, Fallout 76 feels like an atavistic reprisal of a late-2000s MMO. Worse yet, with its low server populations and absence of human NPCs, it’s as if it’s designed to feel like a dying late-2000s MMO. The whole play experience seems set up to make you feel as if you’ve arrived just after the fun is over. Indeed, the game’s opening, where you wake up having missed the start of Reclamation Day, and must trudge to the vault’s exit alone through drifts of spent confetti, couldn’t set the tone more succinctly. The party’s over before it’s even started.

Fallout 76 is a bit of a disaster, which is a shame because there are good ideas and good bits of content here. There wasn’t a single play session where I didn’t have a lot of fun, but there also wasn’t a session where something ridiculous didn’t cause frustration. It feels like it should have been released into early access as a work in progress for the next several months, thus alleviating some of the frustration from poor performance, bugs, and balancing issues. However, Bethesda opted to release Fallout 76 in a broken state, and this time I’m not laughing...

There’s no sugarcoating it: Fallout 76 comes up short at nearly everything it aims to be. It’s not a good role-playing game and it’s not a good multiplayer experience. It never really feeds into the gradual RPG power fantasy but it’s also inadequate as a survival simulator. In wanting to be so much, Fallout 76 doesn’t amount to much at all.

All in all, I dreaded every hour I had to keep playing Fallout 76 for review. As soon as the game was beginning to teeter on fun or interesting, a bug or a frustrating gameplay design element would quickly remind me that the game was otherwise. I'm interested to see whether Bethesda will continue to put work towards making this a somewhat enjoyable experience or if they'll just save their money for Fallout 5.

With the emphasis on human to human interaction, Fallout 76 removed many living NPCs in favor of journals, AI, and radio broadcasts to fill the void. Although this makes sense for a game that is meant to concentrate on multiplayer, it certainly seems to have made the wasteland feel a bit more empty and lonely. That said, we've seen many online games bounce back from a rocky launch with a series of patches that address user feedback and problems. If Bethesda stays dedicated to patching in fixes and making tweaks to Fallout 76, this could be a very different game...

I love Bethesda games. I’ve always embraced their janky, driving on two wheels brand of coming in hot. In fact, I could probably be considered a Bethesda apologist. You know, it’s not a big deal that the games seem like they might rattle themselves apart – just think of all the fantastic experiences you’re having and great characters you’re meeting! Fallout 76 breaks my heart. There’s a giant open world that teems with intriguing possibility… and that’s it. With each passing hour I see dozens if not hundreds of glaring red flags – why didn’t anyone stop the madness? Fallout...

Fallout 76 is a total mess. It's filled with bugs, terrible AI and ugly graphics. Worst of all, it feels like there's a good game deep down in there, but it's limited by technical faults. Still, there's some fun to be had if you like the Fallout setting or progression.

Fallout 76 is sure to be a divisive game. I’m confident that most people won’t be able to forgive its many flaws, especially those going into it expecting a solo experience similar to Fallout 4, but I also think that those looking for a multiplayer Fallout experience will get a kick out of Fallout 76, particularly once Bethesda patches some of the game’s most glaring bugs. As much as I’d like to be able to tell you that this title is terrible or amazing, the truth is that it’s just okay.

An interesting experiment that fails to nail either side of the experience, it uses Fallout trappings to good effect and can be fun with great environmental storytelling and West Virginia itself is gorgeous. The lack of NPCs and overall cohesion along with lacklustre PvP hinder its identity, however.

There are no redeeming features to be found in Fallout 76, and I’m not even sure if it can be saved. Technical issues just make what’s a boring and soulless experience at its core into something that’s simply more of an abomination. And even if you made Fallout 76 into an offline single-player experience I doubt it would set anyone’s world alight. Uninteresting mission design, borderline broken gameplay features, ugly graphics, and a whole smorgasbord of technical issues combine to make Fallout 76 one of the worst gameplay experiences I’ve had this generation, and I’ve played Super Street: The Game...

In an effort to do everything, Fallout 76 fails to do any of it well enough to form an identity. Its multiplayer mindset robs its quests of all the moral decisionmaking that makes the series great, and all that’s left is a buggy mess of systemic designs that never seems to work together and regularly contradicts itself. It all culminates in an aggravating endgame that’s more busywork than satisfying heroics. Bethesda missed the mark with Fallout 76, in part because it seems like it could never decide what it was aiming for.

Currently, the Doomsday Clock is set to two minutes to midnight, the highest risk the world has seen since 1953 when both the US and Soviet Union tested nuclear weapons within six months of each other. Originally, the clock was all about the threat of a nuclear apocalypse. Now, threats also include people who ignore the science around climate change, terrorism, nuclear proliferation and idiotic world leaders. Why do I mention this? Well, one reason. If Fallout 76 is indicative of the world I'll wake up to, I want to stay in cryosleep another 179 years.

Fallout 76 isn’t an inherently bad game. At times, it shows glimpses of what makes the Fallout series one of my personal favorites, as I wandered into its vast world, not knowing what I’d find within the tall skyscrapers of Charlestown or the swampy Mire in the east of the map.

Fallout 76 would have been best served by a longer, continuous B.E.T.A. cycle. Numerous small issues like bugs, stash size, push-to-talk, and other quality of life issues could have been identified before asking people to spend $60 and working on them after release. Despite this faux pas, there is still a tremendous amount of fun to be had either solo or with friends. Multiplayer is a wonderful addition to the Fallout franchise and the world created in West Virginia is unique, gorgeous, an...

The super mutants pressed their attack and my health worsened. As I weaved in and out of dilapidated buildings searching for a temporary safe zone to heal up and find a weapon that could handle this threat, the mutants’ numbers grew. They closed in on my location; their machine-gun fire intensifying, and their grenade tosses becoming more accurate. I couldn’t win this fight, but I was determined to go down in a blaze of glory, hopefully picking off a few before I collapsed. I aimed my firearm at the door, but they didn’t enter. For a moment there was silence.

While you can occasionally make your own fun in Fallout 76, this is still a game that is deeply flawed on multiple levels. While a lot of these issues can be ironed out by Bethesda in the coming months and years, there are some that are part of the game's DNA, and worryingly enough, define the entirety of the experience.

Bethesda for the longest time have been renowned for their single-player, vast open worlds. Other developers have previously helped them expand those worlds into a multiplayer space, such as Zenimax Studios with The Elder Scrolls Online. However Fallout 76 marks Bethesda’s first official foray into a multiplayer realm.
