A Plucky Squire might entertain a younger audience, but it offers little to engage those of a more mature disposition, which is disappointing coming from a publisher such as Devolver.

The Plucky Squire is, ultimately, an indie game that hearkens a lot of nostalgic feelings from previous generations. The blend of The Legend of Zelda's classic gameplay with the Paper Mario style of storytelling and characters is a pitch-perfect combo. Then, to pay homage to more modern 3D platforming, Jot going outside the book to traverse the desk makes for a great set piece. It's a testament to this game's fun and ingenuity that a few minor bumps along the way barely affect its overall qua...

The Plucky Squire is that clever. It’s a game that is impossible to dislike, young or old gamers, a breath of fresh air and a colossal display of creativity and talent. Finding a game that looks like it is a daunting task, and while it may not win a GOTY award because it’s not something designed for the masses and with AAA marketing, it will be game of the year for many, many players who love new and original experiences. The Plucky Squire is a story that is certain to have a happy ending, right as it should be, and...

The Plucky Squire is the story of Jot and his friends fighting an evil wizard, partying with a good wizard, rescuing friendly critters and creatures, and exploring a space they never knew existed. The transitioning from a 2D plane to a 3D one has been done before, but rarely, as well as The Plucky Squire, does it. The transition is smooth and quick and makes sense within the context of the adventure. It adds more to the game as well, allowing players a space away from the book that most of the game takes place in.

With great vigour and enthusiasm, the writer of this review sprang into action to get his thoughts down on the proverbial page. Feeling inspired by his time playing The Plucky Squire, the writer was bursting with passion, glee, and the childlike wonderment instilled into him during every minute of the game’s playtime. With endearing storytelling and one of the best concepts seen in recent gaming memory, the writer was enamoured and eager to share his thoughts in greater depth and detail.

Every once in a while, an indie title garners a significant amount of hype, and most of the time, it falls short of reaching its full potential. The Plucky Squire is one such title that is highly anticipated and for the most part, meets its expectations. While the game may not be perfect, it for the most part lives up to the hype as a vibrant, unique experience.
Read Full ReviewThe Plucky Squire can’t compete on either count. It’s a fantastic concept but a lackluster design that neither surprises players nor meaningfully empowers them. It’s a classic example of a game that must have made for a thrilling half-hour demo at the pitching stage, but that never quite found itself in production. For all its borderline-smug jollity and borderline-twee sense of wonder, and for all the careful craft and evident effort that went into its making, it lacks inspiration in itself, and engenders none in the player. The light bulb is there, but it never pops on.

While The Plucky Squire could have benefited from being fleshed out even just a little bit more, it still provides a unique genre-hopping adventure, one that perfectly captures a feeling a childlike wonder in Jot and the land of Mojo. With fun gameplay, cool puzzles and a great use of different mechanics and genres, and eye-catching artwork, it easily stands out as a storybook adventure worth checking out.

The Plucky Squire is a delectable indie hit that exudes charm from every pixel. Whether you’re turning the pages of its 2D sidescrolling adventure or chopping away at pesky foes in the 3D world, often mixing the two to solve its inventive puzzles, it’s all a complete delight.

The Plucky Squire is a delightful kids adventure with a fun and unique core mechanic that's been realised incredibly well. Jumping in and out of Jot's storybook to explore the "real" world, engage in light puzzles and face off against Humgrump's minions is a constant delight and, even though the game is never as challenging or as devious as we'd have liked, it's got a ton of heart. A must-play for kids, then, and a breezily nice time for any adults playing alongside them.

The Plucky Squire leapt out at us from the very first moment we saw its debut trailer, teasing the dimension-hopping capabilities of its central storybook hero. We're pleased to say the full game delivers on this core premise handsomely; Jot's journey across the pages of his book and beyond is full of unique moments and fun ideas. If you're after a family-friendly adventure, this debut title from All Possible Futures does the job with real style.

The Plucky Squire has a very slow start with excessive dialogue and over-tutorialisation, but once you get past that, it becomes an incredible, dimension-shifting adventure you shouldn't miss out on.

The Plucky Squire oozes creativity and charm on every page. It stands aside Balatro and Animal Well as one of the best indie games of the year.

Hooking me right from the start and eliciting pure joy all the way to the end, The Plucky Squire has gone the extra mile in rewriting what should be expected out of an action-adventure such as this. By drawing from classic inspirations and adding its own spin on things, this is a game that leverages its creativity in all the good ways, and ultimately writes a happy ending not just for Jot and his friends, but hopefully, also for the future of its creators.

We need more games like The Plucky Squire out there, games that aren’t afraid to take themselves too seriously. To push fourth wall boundaries past their normally just referential limits. It feels and looks incredible, the story never feels as if it’s dragging on, and it’s just a joyful experience to see firsthand or to play with anyone of any age. It’s a tale for the ages, and I’ll be singing the praises of The Plucky Squire to anyone willing to listen for a long time.

The Plucky Squire manages to expertly craft an adorably interesting story full of lovable characters, enjoyable narration, and near-perfect parallels between its 2D and 3D worlds. While some parts need just a bit more polish, it exceeded my already high expectations and gave me nearly a dozen hours of laughs, fun, and mental exercise. Plus, well, seeing its cast of cute little characters suddenly turn into buff badasses is a great bonus.

The Plucky Squire is a wonderful experience from start to finish. I just wish that the 3D sections were on par with those in 2D. Regardless, this is a title that everyone needs to play, because they won’t be disappointed.

At the end of the day, The Plucky Squire is an incredible feat. Even if it had stayed a 2D adventure, it's still a marvel to watch the story unfold through dazzling illustrations. The actual art within Jot's storybook itself is beautifully colorful. Once the game starts to mix in the outside 3D world, whether it's the rendered objects on the desk or the different art styles from some of the other worlds out there, it becomes a wonder to behold. It's not every day that a game can blend together so many different visuals, make them all look so...

The Plucky Squire is a game clearly made with a serious amount of love for the wonderful medium of glorious interactivity that is video games. And for it being the first title from development team All Possible Futures, it’s a staggering achievement in art, design and ideas. It’s just a shame the gameplay didn’t get as much attention as the nostalgia it so skilfully indulges.

I wasn't interested in playing The Plucky Squire just by looking at the screenshots. I found the art style slightly peculiar, especially when the main character wasn't in the storybook. Reluctantly, I loaded up the game and found myself having a great time once I got into it.

After spending hours into The Plucky Squire, collecting all its secret treasures and putting an end to Humpgrump’s schemes, I’ve found the game to be phenomenal. The Plucky Squire is both a familiar and predictable, and gorgeously ambitious and creative title. At its best, it's a dimension-hopping romp with excellent meta-writing, standout set-pieces and mini-games, and undeniably creative puzzle mechanics. However, the game does suffer from an aggressively accessible approach, which makes the moment-to-moment combat and exploration feel like a derivative Zelda-clone at times. Plus, each puzzle mechanic feels like an intriguing concept that has not developed to its full potential. That being said, The Plucky Squire is an undeniably feel-good and wholesome indie title deserving of your time and attention, and while some minor bugs...

The Plucky Squire is an entrancing meta adventure that draws you into the story with endearing characters, varied minigames, smooth mechanics and ever-evolving loadout. It's a little inconsistent with its hinting system considering how accessible it is, but the gripping narrative and smart interplay of 2D and 3D levels will have you amused right to the very end.

We've been absolutely spoiled by excellent platforming games recently, and The Plucky Squire is up there with the best of them. Controlling Jot in this fourth-wall-breaking adventure is an utter delight. It's a shame a few bugs persist, but they're not quite enough to stop The Plucky Squire being one of the highlights of the year so far.
