Blair Witch is great at building tension and letting you get lost in its unforgiving forest, but sometimes it takes that too literally. It mostly overcomes that, however, thanks to your magic camcorder and superb pooch.

The Blair Witch Project was a smash hit found-footage horror movie released in 1999, followed by a crummy sequel in 2000 that eschewed much of what made the original popular in the first place. There was a second sequel in 2016 -- confusingly titled Blair Witch -- which we'd forgotten about until we Wikipedia'd the franchise this morning to write this intro.

1999’s The Blair Witch Project is a film that captivated and horrified its audience when it debuted in 1999, spawning a whole Blair Witch franchise that has spun off into sequels and other media. Now, 20 years later, we have a game simply titled Blair Witch, developed by Bloober Team, the studio that brought us Layers of Fear, its sequel, and Observer. But how does it fare against those games? And better yet, does it stand alone as a competent horror game, or does it live in the shadow of the universe the first film masterfully created?

Polish studio Bloober Team is a curious case of a developer that decided to focus on one thing and one thing only: narrative-driven horror games. I’ve had a somewhat mixed history with their games, as I’ve never played anything from them that was just “okay”. It was either dreadful, like Layers of Fear, or surprisingly great, like Observer, one of the few games in which the Switch port ended up being the best of them all. Blair Witch is their newest project, a game based on the franch...

Blair Witch is an instant classic in terms of a horror game. It pulls off tension-building, forces the player to creep themselves out and does it all with a minimum of jump scares. The story alone is a reason to play. If you're brave enough.

So, is the Blair Witch game a good fit for a franchise many have mostly written off by now? As a fan of said series, I would say yes. It absolutely has its faults, with the poorly paced gameplay and story elements being the worst offenders, but the amazing set pieces and psychological horror do a great job of raising the heart rate of anyone willing to venture through the forest. Ultimately, there are a lot of interesting ideas here, but they simply don’t come together like they needed to in order to make the best of them.

In 1999, a small crew of people on a budget of $60,000 set out to make The Blair Witch Project. The film did exceptionally well, pulling in close to $250 million at the box office. On top of this, it was the movie that would popularize the found-footage genre, becoming one of the all-time greats of the medium. Fast forward to 2019, and Bloober Team’s Blair Witch looks to recreate the horror and feelings of terror that so many of us experienced two decades ago. While they don’t hit the mark 100% of the time, Bloober Team has created an...

Blair Witch brings the horror, but several gameplay and visual bugs drag down an otherwise scary walk through the woods.

Bloober Team has made a name for itself with psychological scares, but every attempt to replicate past successes with Blair Witch is lost faster than a trio of amateur filmmakers.

Blair Witch fails to impress at every turn. The story is interesting but unfulfilling, the environment is dull, and the creatures are boring. Worst of all, everything you do is very repetitive. I love horror games but the only thing scary about Blair Witch is how boring it is.

All in all, though, Blair Witch is still an awfully good game. Its unique story about guilt and PTSD, its flexible gameplay, and its inventive approach at horror all make it worthy of your attention. It is also the best Blair Witch-related thing to happen in 20 years, so if you’re already a fan of the franchise, I can’t imagine why you’d miss it. Prepare to be surprised, scared, and delighted.

Bloober Team is a company that has become a synonym of horror for many people. Blair Witch is their first game developed under a license, but the devs were able to turn that into their favor, offering another successful title. Is it their best game yet?

Believe me when I say Terminal Reality's three-volume Blair Witch series is a better use of your time. Or better yet, watch the original found footage classic The Blair Witch Project if you haven't already seen it. It may be hokey, but it's culturally significant – and you may actually walk away a bit shaken.

Blair Witch is lumbering and predictable, as horror often is, and the rattling moments come mostly from jumpscares. The rest is a tepid sort of horror. The labyrinthine forest, with all its swampiness, muck, leaves, and turnarounds, is a well-landscaped anti-idyll, and will likely be a good enough setting to lure in a few horror-hikers. There are also undoubtedly Witchy elements that have been completely lost on me, as one of the many who was nonplussed by the shrugging torch-up-your-own-nose summer camp ghost story of The Blair Witch Project. So Blairites (no not that kind) might get more spook for...

An uneven mix of tense psychological drama and buggy, half-broken gameplay mechanics but the end result is still one of the better movie tie-ins of recent years.

There's a lot of things to like about Blair Witch, from the way it invokes the imagery of the original film, to some inventive camcorder puzzles and intriguing depictions of trauma, but most of these aspects aren't given the time to really develop. There's the skeleton of a really good horror-based walking sim here, and while it's still worth checking out for horror fans, it feels more like a first episode of a series rather than a standalone game. A missed opportunity; all Woody and no real Buzz.

Despite being a fan of Bloober Team’s games, Blair Witch just doesn’t really work. There are far too many moments where you’re just wandering around frustrated in a forest trying to find something to do, and very few moments where the game does something unexpected to scare you. Clever gameplay ideas like the time-changing camcorder go pretty much to waste. Most importantly, despite a few good scares, in general Blair Witch isn’t really scary enough. It has really good storytelling mo...

Lionsgate was wise to let Bloober Team loose with its Blair Witch IP. It has treated it with respect, delivering a game that truly does justice to the source material. While its centre part lets it down somewhat, and Bullet’s pathfinding could do with a bit of improvement, it’s one of the scariest horror games ever made. And your reliance on Bullet, as well as the manipulation of found video footage, adds gameplay meat to what usually ends up being little more than a walking simulator. If you’re brave enough, you should definitely enter the woods and face the Blair...

If there was one game from this year’s E3 that pretty much nobody saw coming, it was Blair Witch. Coming from developer Bloober Team — the folks behind the likes of Layers of Fear and Observer — I had high hopes that the game could replicate the bone-chilling moments and tense atmosphere of the 1999 movie.

The Blair Witch Project movie changed the world of horror movies forever, bringing about new ways to make psychological horror movies even more frightening. While its sequels didn't have the impact of the original movie, the Blair Witch Project has influenced the way horror stories are told, and its influence is today even greater on horror video games.

The Blair Witch movie franchise started out strong, with the release of The Blair Witch Project. The pseudo-documentary became a cultural touchstone, with a companion website and TV special stoking the belief that the tale of three missing college students may have actually happened. A pair of follow-ups failed to capture the magic of that initial found-footage phenomena, because it’s tricky to pin down what exactly that magic is. Bloober Team takes a crack at it with its own Blair Witch game, telling an original story while tapping into the few common elements that the films share. The main character...

The Blair Witch franchise has never been able to capture the magic of the original movie in the years since, but this may be the closest attempt yet thanks to the effective use of the a psychological focused story and gameplay that feels fairly fresh within the horror genre.

Blair Witch is one of the most successfully terrifying horror games I’ve ever played. More so even than any of the Amnesia games, it made me feel like I’d been dragged feet-first through Hell by the end. Discovering Ellis’ troubled past and the often relatable demons it left him with grounded it all and made each eerie or excruciatingly frightful moment personal. Some small technical issues and poor feedback about progress on optional objectives aside, it’s excellently constructed from the tops of the trees to the depths of its madness. If you’re as much of a glutton for punishment when...

Blair Witch isn't necessarily a game many people will want to replay, especially because of a gameplay segment near the end that's just downright tedious. However, many will be satisfied by their initial playthrough, as Blair Witch is a consistently interesting horror story with outstanding audio and graphics throughout. It may not be quite as groundbreaking as the film it's based on, but Blair Witch is the next best thing to the original movie, and it's definitely worth checking out for fans of the franchise, despite its shortcomings.
