Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an incredible RPG that hits most of the right notes and great representation, and it's actually quite playable on the Steam Deck.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is more than just another release in a beloved role-playing franchise. It’s also the first single-player RPG from BioWare, a team whose bread and butter was once this exact type of game, in over seven years. With a beautiful collection of hub worlds to explore, fun and fast action combat, and a memorable cast of characters to share in the adventure, I was impressed throughout my long runtime with Veilguard. And though the central narrative left me wanting, the pers...

Dragon Age: The Veilguard stands on the shoulders of Titans with the previous Dragon Age series and even though the beginning feels a bit clumsy, the game itself delivers in spades.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn’t BioWare’s best work, but it’s good. Offering a beautiful world and a ton to do, heading back into Thedas is an easy choice for some. For others, the downgrade in writing and limited combat might be a dealbreaker.

Though Veilguard plays it too safe too often, this update on a Bioware structure is addictive. It takes a while to get used to its presentation, but once it starts dishing out punches there is no going back.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an exceptional-looking game with initially exciting combat, but it’s let down by uneven storytelling that makes it duller than it should be.

The Veilguard feels like a return to form for BioWare but issues (especially with the mage class) keep it from being superb.

Undermined by its own storytelling and technical troubles, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a tale of community but never quite finds its home.

The Veilguard is a beautiful-looking and highly enjoyable game, and a nice return to a more focused feeling RPG that does justice to both Dragon Age as a series and also to Bioware. It's fun to play in the moment-to-moment, the big decisions feel impactful and worthwhile, and fans of the series will be happy to be running around chasing after that lamentable egg of an Elf once more. It's no Dragon's Dogma 2, though.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an action-filled game that is fluid, crisp, and exciting. The missions are well-written and enjoyable, and the dialogue between companions is delightful. There’s a lot to like about The Veilguard, but there are a few bumps in the road. For older Dragon Age fans, it might feel odd to be planted in this mostly dungeon-based mission corridor, but the experience is never bad or feels like a grind and is mostly Bioware playing it safe.

When all is said and done, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a solid experience. It's flashy, pretty and entertaining, standing out through the combat and environments. It no longer feels like this sprawling world that we explore and save from the brink of destruction, but rather a small pocket that needs constant supervision. This is a more on-the-rails experience when compared to any of the past Dragon Age games. Considering the struggles that Bioware has undergone since Dragon Age: Inquisition, however, it's still awesome that we received a game of this quality. It doesn’t share much in terms of style...

It's taken a decade for RPGamers to be able to return to Thedas. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is clear in its attempts to emulate the impact of another BioWare title, with somewhat successful results.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an RPG that is easier to recommend for its gameplay than its story and characters. While the ability-focused combat is enjoyable, the fantasy narrative is generic and your companions bland.

It’s easy to see Dragon Age The Veilguard as a make-or-break moment for BioWare. For a long time, the studio was known known as the go-to studio for RPGs, with huge titles like Mass Effect, Baldur’s Gate 2 and Knights of the Old Republic under their belts. It’s been a rough few years since then though, and many would have us believe that the studio is on the ropes. So, is Veilguard a victorious recovery? Let’s find out.

The impact that Dragon Age: Inquisition had on the video games industry is still being felt to this day, particularly for anybody in the queer community. In 2014, BioWare created what many considered at the time a high-point for RPG storytelling; an incredible world to explore, compelling companions to spend time with and a whole heap of diversity and inclusion. It’s a high bar that has only recently started to be met, but to this day, Inquisition remains important to many. Ten years later,...

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a phenomenal return to form for BioWare. The story is well-paced and the cast of characters are the trademark BioWare staple of fully-realised, but it’s in the newly action-oriented combat where things truly shine.

This isn’t the end of Dragon Age that I was expecting - in this respect, the game must be rated low. However, as an action RPG with flair and a beautiful fairy-tale world, it turns out to be decent, and sometimes even more than that.

Despite being the fourth entry in the series, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is surprisingly approachable for new players, while still providing plenty to get excited about for those of us who have long held a fascination with the lore in this expansive universe. Developed by BioWare and published by EA, the single-player fantasy RPG offers everyone a chance to spend many hours as a hero in the world of Thedas. Dragon Age has always been known for having strong characters, whether a companion with a full story arc of their own, or simply a blacksmith in one of the towns....
Read Full ReviewThe biggest thing that bugs me about Dragon Age: The Veilguard is that it feels like the safest possible BioWare game. It follows a formula that I have learned to recognize since Mass Effect 2: Get a quest, go to a place, fight enemies in sporadic arenas along the way, fight a boss, do some critical dialogue, and move on to the next, with slight variations along the way. It’s a big river with the illusion of explorative opportunities and just a few branching canals. I think that would be fine if the characters were more compelling, but the quippy...

Dragon Age The Veilguard is a massive new world full of thoughtful stories, epic battles, and beautiful visuals to accompany them. This round of companions is among the most interesting, thoughtful, and downright charismatic, and adventuring with them made for an unforgettable journey.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn’t just in my Game of the Year rankings, it’s in my Best Games of All Time. BioWare has finally matched their recent excellent third-person combat with some of, if not their best, story work to date. This game is an absolute triumph for those old and new to the series.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard follows a group of heroes as they embark on a quest to protect the Veil, the barrier between the mortal world and the Fade, from collapsing. As the Veil weakens, demons and other supernatural threats begin to spill into the world. Players must assemble a diverse team of warriors, mages, and rogues to battle these dangers, uncover ancient secrets, and restore balance to the world of Thedas.
Read Full ReviewFor all the ways it frustrated me, I came away from The Veilguard with mostly positive feelings about it. Despite its quirks, combat is fun on a gut level, and building your character from the game’s massive skill tree offers multiple interesting playstyles no matter how you approach it. Though the narrative hands too much power to Rook in big choices and not enough in small ones, it’s full of great character moments with a compelling central cast. The series I fell in love with in the 2009 tactical RPG Dragon Age: Origins is hardly recognizable anymore, but what’s replaced...

It would be the euphemism of the year to say that for BioWare, a lot is riding on Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The once revered maker of roleplaying games like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age has stumbled severely with its last two games, Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem.

The release of a new Dragon Age title always sends ripples through the RPG community, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard arrives with the weight of both anticipation and skepticism on its shoulders. As BioWare’s latest entry in their acclaimed fantasy series steps away from some of its traditional elements, it raises an essential question: Can an action-oriented Dragon Age still capture the magic that made the franchise legendary?

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a compelling new entry in the series, taking the franchise in a new direction with more RPG-lite ideals. This decision will alienate Die Hard fans but will undoubtedly win favor with new fans willing to embrace the series. Veilguard has a fantastic tale to tell, a stunning fantasy setting to explore, a lovable cast of characters, and a dynamic three-prong combat system that offers smooth Archery, melee, and RTS mechanics. The side content and some visual details leave much to be desired, but overall, this big swing by Bioware might just usher in a fruitful...

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an approachable, expansive action-oriented RPG and feels like a true end to whatever the franchise was before. The book's not finished, but a significant chapter has closed. While Dragon Age: The Veilguard is undoubtedly different in many ways from its predecessors and takes lessons learned from Mass Effect to heart, there's a lot to love – mechanically and narratively – about the new normal and what is hopefully a foundation for what's to come.

Dragon Age fans will already have made up their mind to get Veilguard, I’m sure. I can reassure those series fans, however, that I think they’ll enjoy the game. It corrects a number of the mistakes that plagued the otherwise enjoyable Dragon Age: Inquisition, while retaining the elements of the series that make it what it is in the first place. For newcomers, starting this late in the series is not without complications. Veilguard takes place far away from the southern part of the game’s world, where the other games in the series were set, but Dragon Age is a...

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a triumphant return to form for BioWare. This is a top-class action-RPG that lives up to the Dragon-Age name whilst laying to rest the ghosts of Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem. With a roster of amazing companions to recruit, a mind-bending world full of exquisite regions to explore, and combat that raises the bar in every possible way for the franchise, this is the good stuff, thank you very much. We were worried, for sure — it's been a long time since the glory of Inquisition — but we've been served a follow-up here that...

It's been close to ten whole years since Dragon Age: Inquisition, if you can believe it — and it's fair to say that developer BioWare has endured a difficult decade. The studio effectively tanked its once industry-leading reputation with Mass Effect: Andromeda and ANTHEM — two titles that fell so far short of past standards that expectations surrounding the team's next project dropped to an all-time low.
