Helldivers 2 keeps kicking me in the rear end, and I can't help but respect it. Visiting its warzones often feels like a one-way trip, to the point where I'm surprised to make it through. My group chats are awash with war stories of hard-fought victories and those times I dropped an airstrike on my head.

Helldivers 2 is a team-focused co-op, third-person shooter about waging a galactic war against the enemies of Super Earth. Its moment-to-moment gameplay warps every match into a cinematic masterpiece unique to you and your squad. Every mission is filled with tense moments, epic climatic comebacks, and a ton of humor as you’re friend blows himself up because he held a grenade in his hands too long.

For the past month one game (at least one that isn’t called Final Fantasy XIV) has been dominating my time. Helldivers 2 is a game that I was following before launch, but had no idea how successful it would eventually become. I know it’s early to say that in the middle of March, with so many titles yet to come out, but this could very much not just be an early game of the year contender, but could go down as one of the best cooperative games of all time.

The novelty of Helldivers 2, like its in-game purpose, is reliant on multiple conditions working together in synergy. Said conditions haven't just been met but surpassed, in less than a month since launch. It's an outstanding achievement, one that has deservedly engulfed the conversation. Yet, the commitment to a live service model comes with compromises. It's the game of the moment, sure, albeit a fleeting one. Only time will tell how long the ships outside your window will stay in orbit — or if there'll even be a server to queue up for.

Wait a few days or weeks to buy the game if you can resist for now. There are frustrations to be had, but they're entirely due to the fact that this is such an amazingly fun and smooth co-op experience that too many people are all trying to play at once! Helldivers 2 is one of the most refreshing multiplayer experiences out there and easily the best PvE extraction shooter to date. Server issues aside, which eventually should be eliminated, jump into Helldivers 2 and you’re bound to have a good time. Its battles are challenging and engaging, it’s got a fun sense of humour, and it’s rewarding seeing your war efforts pay off. With no roadmap and little knowledge of what’s to come for Helldivers 2, it’ll be interesting to see where the game goes in the following months and possibly years. One thing is sure, though, and that’s that Arrowhead Game Studios has crafted brilliant multiplayer, one that puts the players first above all else. Helldivers 2 is some of the best fun we've had with friends on PS5. It's a simple and broad statement to start a review with, but in many ways Helldivers 2 is a simple game. This satirical bug-squashing shooter has its upgrades and customisation, but it's at its best when you're holding the trigger and not letting go. The beauty of Helldivers 2 is in its simplicity. You're just a single soldier tasked with the impossible job of contributing to a whole galaxy's defense.
