One of the biggest changes to the gameplay of the franchise is the higher emphasis on combat, which to be fair is handled quite elegantly. Faith has quite an extensive move set when it comes to first person combat, which in many ways is as fluid as the actual traversal mechanics that take the spotlight. Ranging from heavy/light attacks to traversal-based attacks and shifts in movements to avoid attacks, the game offers enough variety to create mechanics that don’t interfere with the core of the game, but strengthen it in multiple aspects. The only downside is that certain combat situations...

The original Mirror’s Edge has become a cult classic, loved by its fans but mostly forgotten by the general gaming population. Despite featuring many interesting and unique ideas (for the time) EA just failed to garner interest and the game just faded into the background, and this makes the sequel all the more intriguing. Even with little interest from the general game player DICE still brought us a sequel to the original even if it was many years later, and with it they brought us a fun and refreshing experience that leaves you wanting more for better or worse.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is best when you're on the move, climbing up a tall building and booking it across rooftops. When the world is like a puzzle that you are solving on the fly using all your skills. These moments are in the game, there just aren't that many of them.

As you’ve probably already gathered, Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is quite a disappointment, although that’s not to say that it can’t be highly enjoyable at times. When everything comes together as intended and you’re able to make full use of Faith’s repertoire of traversal skills without issue, there’s simply nothing else out there quite like it apart from its predecessor. Unfortunately, there are too many frustrations and banalities that break any prospect of enjoyment in the long-term. This is not the tight, structured experience that the original Mirror’s Edge was; more of a similar but heavily diluted one that offers more...

Faith is back to run another day after an eight year hiatus. The original Mirror's Edge was an instant classic with its unique art style and parkour gameplay, but times change quickly so has Dice been able to keep up with Faith?

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a brilliant free running game with simple and elegant controls, but is marred by clunky combat.

It feels like it was just yesterday that the original Mirror’s Edge was released, giving us the first ever first-person parkour game, giving the free-flowing exhilaration of leaping across roof tops, scaling tall buildings and sprinting across the city that we had never seen before. While fun, it was ultimately a short and linear experience that couldn’t quite carry the concept for an entire lengthy adventure. I loved it anyway, so when Mirror’s Edge Catalyst was announced eight years l...

There's a clear set-up for more stories to be told with Faith and the runners of Glass with Mirror's Edge Catalyst, and while it isn't quite as shiny and perfect as the city of Glass, hopefully in due time we'll get to see more from Mirror's Edge and experience the series at its full, untapped potential. Though it trips itself up occasionally with combat and a lackluster story, at a full run few games can catch up to Mirror's Edge for pure exhilaration and Catalyst is more than ready for the race.

Despite a largely uninteresting story, Mirror's Edge Catalyst offers fans of the original game everything they've been hoping for.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is a refreshing ad unique take in the first-person genre. During its shining moments you’ll find yourself cruising across Glass, effortlessly performing incredible parkour moves. The crushing weight of Catalyst’s poor story and uninspiring horde of collectables and delivery distractions cause Faith’s return to fall short. I’m not disappointed with Mirror’s Edge Catalyst but it could’ve been a much better game.

Catalyst occasionally infuriated me, and at other times simply passed me by in a blur, but on the whole I enjoyed my time with it. The movement is still wonderful. The world is still beautiful. There's still nothing else quite like it. It's better than the first game in most ways and there are still umpteen ideas in here crying out for a better implementation. So I'll end in the spirit of the game, with a refined version of what I said last time: Mirror's Edge Catalyst is good and you should probably play it, but damn, it could have...

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is at times an exhilarating experience, but poor combat and an anemic setting means its attempted great leap falls short of the target.

Admittedly, there is some fun to be had in all aspects of the game, but it’s not as rewarding as passion projects like this should be. For a game that only exists because a die-hard group of fans demanded it, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst should have been better. Unfortunately, it’s a mediocre follow-up at best.

But it’s been quite the journey, as Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is one of the toughest reviews I’ve tackled in some time. It was so hard to acclimate to the changes and suffocating AAA mentality after the original was near perfect, but I think once people get over that initial shock, they’ll come to adore it in spite of that.

Faith has finally returned with Mirror's Edge Catalyst. Is it a return to form, especially when her "form" was never all that fleshed out to begin with? It's certainly a decent waste of time, worth visiting on and off through the months, but nothing spectacular.

A better game than the original, but it still suffers from many of the same problems – with desperately uninteresting storytelling and combat.

Of course, Mirror’s Edge isn’t about the story, it’s about the immersion: the thrill of running, free, across the glass paved rooftops of a massive city. And that’s okay, because that’s exactly what the original Mirror’s Edge was. DICE may have failed to address all of the problems of its predecessor, but it completely re-captured what Mirror’s Edge was all about. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is a great way to bring new fans–and old fans alike–back into the world of Faith Connors. Now, I can only hope that we don’t have to wait another eight years to see Faith again.

At its best, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is a joyous flight across the rooftops of a gorgeous city, with a grace that belies the weight and impact of Faith’s movement, but DICE seem to forget this on a few occasions, dragging it down with combat that brings the free running to a halt. It’s a fantastic game at times, but just as with the utopian setting, there are problems that lie breath the surface.

When the first Mirror's Edge released in 2008, it performed so poorly on the sales front that it's really quite remarkable that Mirror's Edge Catalyst exists at all. While the original certainly had its fair share of issues, some gamers look back on it quite fondly – especially since there wasn't anything quite like it at the time, either in terms of gameplay or setting.

The original Mirror's Edge wasn't perfect, but it felt like something new when it released in 2008. The violence-averse platformer had a modern artistic edge and intricately woven levels that offered multiple paths worth exploring. However, its defining characteristic was a first-person camera that let players experience the thrills of urban exploration directly from the protagonist’s perspective. Fast forward to today, and first-person games are more diverse than ever. But Mirror's Edge still feels like an anomaly, seemingly leaving the field wide open for DICE's follow-up. Unfortunately, a sterile open world and excessive backtracking drain Catalyst of the fun found...

The staples of Mirror’s Edge remain refreshing and unique in the first-person genre in 2016, but Catalyst’s attempts to keep up with the open-world Joneses don’t always jive with its design strengths of movement and momentum. On top of that, muddy-looking console versions and a lame story filled with unlikable characters doom Mirror’s Edge’s return to fall short. I was so happy this game was being made, but in the end I’m just as disappointed in how it turned out.

Mirror's Edge: Catalyst rarely, if ever, makes as memorable an impression as its predecessor did. While it tries incredibly hard to do so, and succeeds in terms of world building and story development, it's all at the sake of nearly every other facet that players of the original may have held near and dear.
