Sea of Thieves is a great game that offers a lot. Between the PvE elements, PvP chaos, story missions, added content, and the upcoming Season 12, there’s a ton to engage with. Playing solo may be a mixed experience, but when it clicked, there was so much to enjoy with your time on the sea. Hitting the high seas with a crew is a genuine blast, leading to absolute chaos in no time flat.

Even after six years, Sea Of Thieves remains a great time with friends, and now, with the PlayStation 5 port, even more friends can join in the hilariously fun high sea adventures.

Players looking for a relaxing adventure on the Sea of Thieves open waters may explore the Safer Seas, where they won't be bothered by other potentially bloodthirsty pirates. The High Seas provide more dangers and rewards, but either mode will introduce the gorgeous art design and lighting of the Sea of Thieves vibrant world, which is capable of encouraging players to stop whatever they are doing to soak up the scenery. Attention to detail is so high in Sea of Thieves that players susceptible to getting sea-sickness in real life might experience it when sailing in the game.

Sea of Thieves has finally dropped its anchor in PS5 waters, bringing with it years of content updates, quality of life improvements, and some of the best-looking water in a video game. But is this now former Xbox exclusive still worth playing six years after its initial launch? And how friendly is it to newcomers like us? After taking to the high seas with a rag-tag crew on PS5, Sea of Thieves proves itself to be one of the most approachable live service games on the market, and one we can’t wait to see grow on PlayStation.

Rare's piratical playground looks lovely, but you have to make a bit too much of your own fun. The sound and the fury of the waves is lovely, but for Sea of Thieves to be properly good it needs to give the players more to work with.

If there’s one take away I have from my time with Sea of Thieves over the last two years, is that it’s been such a pleasure to see it evolve. I’ve been there for some amazing moments, from first uniting with another crew to take on a legendary megalodon, to battling relentless foes on a quest to keep every piece of treasure I could find. I’ve experienced the triumph of victory, the bitterness of losing everything as my ships sinks beneath the waves. I’ve enjoyed the quieter moments with friends just talking about life. I’ve undertaken amazing quests, solved unique...

Sea of Thieves has managed to successfully steer a course through turbulent waters during its first two years. Its once somewhat sterile and empty world is now full to bursting point with activities and distractions and it's got a sense of direction and purpose which mean players don't need to work nearly as hard to find ways in which to indulge their inner Black Beard. Tall Tales provide a properly meaty, narrative-driven campaign that works equally as well for solo players as it does for eager crews of four and that once empty horizon is now full of things to...

A year of updates has helped fill out its light content, but the real magic was there from the start. Rare’s take on cartoon piracy encourages you to behave as a cartoon pirate should: a little bloodthirsty, a little silly, and almost always drunk.

Playing Sea of Thieves feels a bit like working in a theater before the set has been completely built. There’s plenty of space to goof around and a few swords in the wings to have mock fights with, but none of its quite ready for show time. A lack of features and polish has frustrated some players, but those willing to meet the game halfway will discover a game that’s exciting and pensive in equal measure. Sea of Thieves is as fickle and changeable as the sea itself.

This historian notes the progression in the pirate's attitude. At the outset, she is optimistic at best and infuriated at worst. Her outlook seems to peak when she first joins a crew and sails with friends, but she cannot maintain that energy, and eventually devolves once again into frustration—primarily, it seems, with other pirates of the time, who show little to no restraint in their violence for no reason. However, she maintains a constant love for the sea, and seemed to greatly enjoy the time she spent in a full crew; even throughout misfortunes, such as lost ships and chicken...

Sea of Thieves was meant to be a return to form for Rare, a game studio with a loved history that had been relegated to Kinect-hell for years. How does it fare in the end? Kinect-hell might not have been so bad after all.

Sea of Thieves is a mixed bag of emotions for me. It's a great social experience to play with a group of friends and sail on the prettiest water you will ever see in a video game. It's also bogged down by tedious and repetitive voyages that reward you with meager pay. When you can eventually purchase an item, it will only affect how you look. If that is the case, it seems puzzling that I can't create a character I want to flaunt to any passerby. There is enjoyment to be found in Sea of Thieves, but not enough...

Sea of Thieves defies modern gaming conventions in brilliant and refreshing fashion, creating a fairly unique sandbox where you and your crew need to find your own fun. It might be in real need of more variety to the quests and activities, but Sea of Thieves’ curious charms are like a siren’s song that keep drawing me back for more piratical adventures on the high seas.

A uniquely open-ended online adventure with some of the best co-op of any game, but at the moment there’s not nearly enough content or variety to keep it interesting for long.

BOOM! On my command my first mate fires me from our port-side cannons towards Snake Island. Sailing gracefully through the air like an albatross on the currents of the wind I take stock of the situation ahead of me and my men. We would face an army of skeletons and a jungle of snakes. Taking the head of the skeleton captain for the Order of Souls wouldn’t be easy…  As I continued my flight towards and soon over the island it soon became clear that my first mate’s aim had been far less ...

Sea of Thieves is like the kiddy-pool at the waterpark. They’re both pirate-themed, they both feature fun activities improved by having friends with you, and they’re both shallow in the interest of keeping things entertaining without being dangerous. The stories Sea of Thieves gifts you and your crew are jubilant and silly, but many elements of the experience left me wanting, even when it delivered on the pirate life.

Rare unquestionably need to apply new meat to these beautiful bones. I've enjoyed the ambience of Sea of Thieves so much that I want it to be something that stays in my life for a long time to come, but, in its current state, I know that is impossible. There is a platform for wonderful things here, but if Rare don't build new things atop it PDQ, it will soon crumble forever.

Writing this review leaves me conflicted. On one hand, Rare’s latest open world exploration pirate sim is probably right up there as one of the most immersive games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. And on the other hand, the game simply suffers from way too many drawbacks that make it difficult to give this a wholehearted recommendation.

The foundation is great. The fundamentals are there. It doesn’t take much imagination to see how this game could blossom into something magnificent. But so long as it’s missing long-term depth and incentives to stick around past the first few weeks, Sea of Thieves will feel like a missed opportunity.

Jack of many trades, master of none.  Sea of Thieves has a beautiful, wide ocean to explore.  It's too bad that it feels about as deep as a puddle.

Sea of Thieves is a pirate fantasy sandbox with an enormous amount of things to do, made unpredictable and exciting by the addition of other players. Coordinating together across the deck of a massive pirate ship is pure chaos at times, but it’s also endlessly entertaining. The cosmetic-only progression system doesn’t give you as much incentive to keep playing as I’d have liked and its free-form nature left me feeling lost at sea at times – but if you’ve got a good group of two or three friends to play with, it’s hard to find a game as entertaining to...
