It’s certainly not a game for those looking for a more relaxing trip through mythical Japanese inspired locales, but whoever decides to stick with Sekiro through its hardships are bound to experience one of the most rewarding and memorable titles of the year.

Sekiro is a game made for fans of From Software who wanted a little more control over their actions. Gone are the builds and playstyles from Dark Souls and Bloodborne but the sword combat is the best that From Software has ever produced along with some stunning level design. The difficulty is brutal at times and may not be for everyone but stick around and you’ll find a journey that will pull you in like no other.

There aren’t many developers that I have full faith in. Developers who I don’t need to worry about if the product is going to be of good quality and something I’ll enjoy. FromSoftware has yet to fail me, but I will admit my faith was a bit shaken with the announcement that Activision was attached to the game in any capacity. Activision doesn’t exactly have the best track record with publishing, but luckily their involvement was limited. I’m happy to say that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twi...

Ever since ending their Souls series, Hidetaka Miyazaki and his chums at FromSoftware have been branching out to new genres. Now that they crafted an action-packed ninja game, let's see how it holds up to their legacy.

More than anything though, Sekiro is a game that I am endlessly thankful for having spent time with the past few weeks. The moments of elation that I have had playing through Sekiro were unmatched not only in gaming but in my everyday life. It provided a sense of joy that comforted me and made me optimistic when I needed it most. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a game I will continue to look back at fondly for years to come because of this.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has FromSoftware's typical brutal difficulty, but honestly that's beside the point. What matters is the thoughtful, precision-based combat, smart use of stealth, and a skill tree that's trimmed of fat. This game shows what you can do with game design if you dispense with the extraneous and focus on strong core mechanics. It's a punishing, rewarding, and beautiful experience.

Fromsoftware’s gamble to put down the sword and shield and take us to the Sengoku Japan period, with a lovable one-armed Shinboi, has paid off. Simultaneously, being a fantastic hack and slash title with an outstanding combat system that forces you to do better that’s only matched by visuals and amazing sound production. Lots of action, with even more content to play through. Sekiro is one of the best gems of 2019, and I can’t put it down.

Japan’s FromSoftware has forged a reputation for making tough-as-nails games, mostly thanks to its more recent slew of action RPG titles: Demon’s Souls, the Dark Souls trilogy and Bloodborne. All make star features of their consistently challenging combat, opaque mechanics and deliberately obtuse storytelling.

I was playing on the PlayStation 4 Pro, and the game doesn't run at a consistent frame rate, which proves to be a problem. It is all about precision in Sekiro, and a dip in the frame rate can get you killed. The Deathblows can also be frustrating; a different color for the sweep, pierce, or grapple would have been nice. You can choose between Japanese or English dubbing as well.

Sekiro: Shadow’s Die Twice is following a legacy of phenomenal hardcore action RPGs from developer FromSoftware. This is a studio that has well and truly found their niche. They’re managing to not only impress gamers time and time again with every new release, but they’ve also single-handedly invented a new genre of games. It’s an incredible feat in the modern gaming world and one that proves how influential this team have become.

I had high expectations, but Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice lived up to them. In fact, in some ways it exceeded them. It’s not a perfect game, but it comes very close. FromSoftware, via Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Tenchu, and Bloodborne, has built this beautiful, mystifying, work of art. A work of art that demands your patience, persistent and the application of all of your skill to fully understand and enjoy it. But it really is worth the effort. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is yet another FromSoftware classic.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice stands tall among some of From Software’s most renowned titles. The challenge is clear and present, the story and mystery are equally intriguing, and the beautiful vistas and soundtrack work in perfect harmony. It might be entirely different to what came before it, but Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a near-perfect experience and a natural progression of the Soulsborne series.

Boasting the best swordfighting in the business, Sekiro is a game of rare but deserved self-assurance. You’ll despair as it breaks you down, but then you’ll exult as it builds you up. It’s a journey like little else in gaming, and if you’re up for the challenge, you absolutely have to play it.

From Software find themselves in a unique position. The Dark Souls creators remain one of the most distinctive developers around, and yet, most of their recent games have followed a similar blueprint. Plenty of fans are happy about that, as there’s still nothing quite like Dark Souls, but others would prefer they try something new. Well, it seems From Software is listening to the folks in the latter camp. Last year they launched the VR adventure Déraciné, and now we have Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

It's a bit of a tired point at this stage, but it's definitely true -- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a far cry from Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and anyone who ignores this will be summarily slashed to pieces. From Software's latest shares some similarities with its predecessors, but with combat, traversal, and character progression all very different, it's a new experience and a new challenge to face, even for seasoned players.

But I won’t tell you to stay away. Look at these bruises, look at these scars. Yes, Sekiro hurts. But look at this smile as well. Shadows Die Twice is a beautiful, masochistic misadventure. Some of its boss fights are so stupendous, I dare not speak about them. It is a test of mettle and nerve that proves From Software are still winning the arms race against us cheesey rats. A brutal master who snaps the shield and broadsword out of your hands, and looks you up-and-down for what you are capable of. No more blocking, chump. You’re going to...

In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the thread between life and death is tenuous. As the One-Armed Wolf, a loyal shinobi seeking to save a young noble with a cursed bloodline, you traverse a feudal Japan so saturated with the remnants of war that the idea of mortality becomes fickle: dead bodies blending in with the local flora and fauna, so many wounded soldiers sharing their last words that you could create a compendium of the lost. This is all underscored by a cruel and ultimately grueling irony—you cannot die.

This is a brutally unforgiving game that demands constant attention from its players, but it's the kind of attention that I have been all too happy to devote. Thanks to its stellar combat and memorable boss fights, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a proud reminder of the fact that FromSoftware doesn't require the crutch of an established formula to deliver an arresting experience.

Sekiro is a game a lot of people are going to bounce off. It’s one for the “git gud” crowd - for people who want a feeling of accomplishment, rather than the fake achievement you feel from finding some Level 20 Pants in most modern triple-A experiences. It’s FromSoftware at its most confident, at its most unapologetic. It’s Bloodborne but faster, with fewer crutches yet somehow more fair. It’s also one of the best games released so far in what’s already looking like a strong 2019.

I don’t think there’s a game in the history of games that has subsequently made me curse more or felt more rewarding than Sekiro. As a FromSoftware title, I expected it to be difficult. I would have been disappointed if it wasn’t. That didn’t stop me from shouting obscenities as Lady Butterfly stabbed me for the thousandth time or I was set ablaze by an enormous bull with a flaming hay bale on its horns. And yet, for each time I was impaled, sliced, skewered, or roasted, I learned something new. I took those lessons through more failures, making small...

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice manages to live up to its monstrously high expectations in nearly every way. Its high-risk combat system is as satisfying as it is punishing, and its level design begs you to explore every inch of the world. While its locations and enemies aren’t as varied as in previous From Software games, you’ll hardly notice when you’re locking swords with opponents across several beautiful settings. Sekiro tells an intriguing tale about loyalty and mortality packed with surprises and easy-to-miss side stories.

Death is one of many constants players have come to expect from a From Software title alongside a well-designed world, a gameplay loop that rewards risk and experimentation, and a fair challenge. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice mostly checks these boxes while delivering a new take on the traditional formula. While not original, Sekiro’s story provides greater context through its pre-defined protagonist and his motivations. The game is faster to focus on offense, but still retains that addicting gameplay loop players expect. Sekiro is difficult, perhaps unfairly so at specific times. The gameplay is overall satisfying, though there are moments where...

Sekiro evolves From Software’s formula into a stylish stealth-action adventure that, naturally, emphasizes precision and skill in its combat. It walks the line between deliberate and patient stealth and breakneck melee combat against threats both earthly and otherworldly. Its imaginative and flexible tools support a more focused experience that shaves down some of From Software’s overly cryptic sensibilities without losing its air of mystery. Sekiro is an amazing new twist on a familiar set of ideas that can stand on its own alongside its predecessors.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a truly new expression of the design philosophy that FromSoftware has spent years refining. Shifting gears a bit in the setting, story, and gameplay, the spirit of Dark Souls is still clearly the driving factor here.
