Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is the gaming revamp equivalent of the time Donatello took a perfectly good Volkswagen bus and upcycled it into the high-tech, tubular AF Turtle Van. Hitch a ride, dudes.

I’ve been eagerly anticipating Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge ever since it was announced. My lofty expectations were ridiculously sky high and surely a bar that could never be reached. So, it is a statement of the game’s quality that it exceeded even my wildest dreams. This is the best scrolling beat ‘em up since Streets of Rage 4 and in the top ten of all time. A nostalgia-injected nunchuck whack of love to the brain, Shredder's Revenge It is not to be missed. Cowabunga indeed.

Even for non-fans, you can beat the game in a single afternoon and have more fun than you will in most 50-hour open-world epics. If you’re looking for a new multiplayer game, Shredder’s Revenge is a must-play, thanks to its stellar combat and upbeat tone that makes it worth revisiting levels again and again.

While local co-op has been a staple of the series since the first game released in the arcades (as it naturally would be), Shredder’s Revenge cranks it up by allowing up to 6 players locally as well as online, which as you can imagine, gets as hectic as it sounds but in the best possible way. I didn’t get a chance to try co-op online, but traditionally, these games tend to have lag issues.Overall, Shredder’s Revenge is an exquisitely executed example of modernising a classic genre and making you feel like this is how you remember the older games looking...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a delightful celebration of the Heroes in a Half-Shell. More importantly, it’s simply a helluva lot of fun to play. It breaks little in the way of new ground, remaining rooted in old-school cool, but it does offer wild, satisfying combat, packed out with personality and charm. For anyone who ever jumped off a schoolyard wall — tree branch in hand — shouting “Cowabunga!”, Shredder’s Revenge is absolutely worth shelling out for.

To battle the forces of evil lurking within Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, players can choose between a wide range of characters with different stats and attack animations in either single player or online co-op. In classic TMNT side-scrolling fashion, players advance across each of the game’s levels by moving from left to right, with a vertical movement plane also allowing them to move up and down to help get the drop on enemies and collect power-ups. Players can string together attacks to form combos, automatically grapple foes to throw them into other enemies or even through the screen...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a fantastic homage to the classic TMNT games that players loved thirty years ago. It doesn’t do anything new with the beat 'em genre and could use an extra game more or two, but that’s ok; the game's core is still incredibly entertaining and is sure to satisfy fans of the Ninja Turtles. Shredder’s Revenge offers deep, fast-paced combat while being widely approachable to new players, and it's all packaged inside a loving tribute to the 1987 cartoon, teeming with personality and admiration for everyone’s favorite heroes in a half-shell.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a really good game in its own right, capturing the look and feel of the Konami-era arcade games that fans have wanted to see come back for decades. However, when compared to other fan-made efforts (You know the one I’m talking about), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge feels like it was just the same exact concept done with a bigger budget yet more limitations.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge feels like it’s designed from an Ninja Turtles arcade beat ‘em up template, which strips it of creativity and originality and makes it feel predictable and familiar. But the fluid combat continually sucks me back in, even though that also suffers from combat designs that should’ve been left in the past.

Reviewing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game (or any TMNT product in general) is something that will result in emotionally charged responses from me, be them positive or negative. This franchise was my childhood. It was my introduction to the English language, my introduction to the gaming world (TMNT II was the first game I ever played), and the first superhero franchise I ever got to care about, mostly due to it having a protagonist with the same name as mine. The reveal trailer for Teenag...

I will note, fans of the original arcade game might be keen to play this one on hard mode. I knocked the game out in a single three hour sitting without any trouble while on normal difficulty. Hell, I don’t even think I got close to reaching my last life or failing a stage ever. I still had a lot of fun breezing through the game, but those looking for that classic arcade difficulty might do best to start their first run on hard.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge caters to a specific niche audience, but couldn't have done a better job of it. The developers understood what made the arcade games great thirty plus years ago and build on it, creating a game that is rooted in the style of its predecessors with just enough modernization to feel contemporary. References to the classic games and cartoon are sprinkled throughout. Interactions with supporting characters like Vern and Irma are deliberately handled in a manner that would fit in during the 16-bit era. Shredder's Revenge does rely on nostalgia for the golden age of...

Tribute Games and Dotemu have officially brought back the beat-'em-up genre into the spotlight. Shredder's Revenge channels the greatness of arcade beat-'em-ups from the 80s and 90s to create an exceptional experience. Teaming up with friends and taking on the Shredder and his ninja Foot army will definitely put a smile on your face. With plenty of quality-of-life additions like unlockable skills and mission-to-mission quick saves, the only thing holding the title back is the lack of any unlockables and only two game modes to play through.
