There are lots of design choices I didn’t mesh with in Frontiers of Pandora. I love the world, but barriers blocked me from fully immersing myself in it, and it’s littered with activities and outposts plucked straight out of the 2010s and planted in Pandora’s soil.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora soars to new heights with its innovative gameplay mechanics and gorgeous world design. But I constantly found myself hitting walls and fighting against the game's combat instead of working with it. There were moments that I dreaded partaking in, and others that I reveled in.

James Cameron’s Avatar franchise has been crying out for a good video game adaptation since Day One. The IP has always been more about immersion and worldbuilding than storytelling, two things games do better than any other medium. Despite this, the interactive potential of the franchise has largely lay dormant (a forgettable Xbox-360-era game aside) until the recent release of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an astonishing achievement, with exquisite visuals and a remarkable balance between pacifism and action. This is an enthralling alien world that plays host to a unique FPS.

While I eventually began having fun with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the game was a very difficult nut to crack. Rather than being open to the way I wanted to play it, Avatar pushed me to find the way it wanted to be played, and then kinda punished me for doing so. Frontiers of Pandora should feel free and flowing, but I've found a lot of the experience to be restrictive and near-punitive. Once I pushed through the game's many barriers to entry, I started having a good time, but don't expect to just jump in and have fun. Like...

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora sticks closely to the established Ubisoft open world formula, serving up a lush environment in which players can get busy skulking around, levelling up, gathering resources and taking out enemy compounds. Stealth and ground combat get the job done without any surprises, aerial combat is turgid, and there's a reasonable parkour system in the mix. However, the narrative here is a letdown; it's bland stuff all the way along, side missions are cookie-cutter stuff and really - unless you're a huge Avatar/Far Cry Primal fan or a younger gamer, there isn't much here you haven't seen...

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a game this writer has been waiting a long time for. In many ways, it is the Hogwarts Legacy for fans of big blue folk and vibrant alien worlds. But with that apt comparison and Ubisoft Massive at the helm, does it do enough to stand on its own two feet? Or is it nothing more than a pretty tour through Avatar’s greatest hits? While it certainly is pretty and it does its best to hit those Avatar beats, Frontiers of Pandora actually won us over with one of the most enchanting open-worlds available on...

Every additional hour that I put into this game feels more compelling and immersive than the last. If you think you’ve seen all there is to see, trust me—you haven’t. The features, mechanics, and quirks of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora seem to grow exponentially rather than linearly, and I feel like Jake Sully in the first film scarfing down his meal in his human form so he can return to his Avatar body and get back out to Pandora. This game really is a gift that keeps on giving. In fact, I feel like I could write another 15 paragraphs...

I really wanted to like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora more than I did, but the game's various shortcomings make it difficult to love entirely. The exceptional graphics and brief moments of greatness make it worthwhile for Avatar fans, but most anyone else is likely to be frustrated by how close it comes to doing something special only to fall shy of it's potential.

To be clear, it’s still an enjoyable game whenever focused on the immersive appeal that comes with being a Na’vi, but it’s hard not to acknowledge the areas where it suffers and fails to knock out what makes the world of Pandora tempting to travel beyond its untamed sights.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora feels powerful when it lets you connect with nature as it offers you something unique only the world of Avatar can show. Once you leave the warmth of its natural beauty behind, what you are left with is just another open-world game with an overworked story of saving the world.

Between providing little value to the IP or otherwise squandering Avatar’s themes of environmentalism into checklist items in service of the stale Ubisoft open-world formula, Frontiers of Pandora leaves little to enjoy for fans of the franchise and even less for anyone who wants to see these games evolve past Far Cry 3. Stunning to look at, tedious to play, and with nothing to say, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora feels less like the game Cameron’s films deserve and more like a theme park ride that wears out its welcome far too soon.

Even with its faults, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a stunning visual achievement, much like the films on which it's inspired. Only here, a rich narrative pulls you deep into the Na'vi and explores more tangible means of fighting back against a colonial power that offers a cathartic experience... Blow up a pipeline, save an animal, and explore the vast world of Pandora. That's a heck of a way to close out a year.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora puts a bow on an incredible 2023 for PC and console players.  It’s the best type of Ubisoft open-world title.  One with a focus on fun gameplay, excellent storytelling, and respect for your time.  It is perhaps the best-looking game I’ve ever seen.  A delight for fans of Avatar, this game is so damned good that even one apathetic to the IP like myself couldn’t help but fall in love with it.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has some excellent mechanical depth let down by repetitive missions and a very safe story. When you’re flowing through the environment taking out RDA soldiers with volleys of arrows, it feels fantastic. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t provide many opportunities to use the full breadth of its systems. Still, it’s drop dead gorgeous and very fun for what it is.

Avatar exists through the sheer force of James Cameron’s will. I remember the original film as a vehicle for 3D cinema above anything else, including story. My husband and I streamed The Way of Water over two nights over some obligation to watch it, but fully aware that we weren’t going to cover a three-hour film in one sitting. We finished it merely because we started it, not because we wanted to.

Avatar almost feels like a testament to me getting older pretty quickly. Can you believe the original movie, that thing that was briefly considered the greatest cinematic achievement of all time or whatever, was released fourteen freaking years ago? And even when I thought the hype had died down in between the releases of the first movie and its sequel, James Cameron would eventually shut me up by breaking box office records yet again. I may not be the biggest Avatar fan in the world (I mean,...

It’s always a hard job adapting IP into video games. Harder yet is the task of adapting James Cameron’s Avatar, still one of the best-selling yet also retrospectively contentious franchises to date. With Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, this is, somehow, Ubisoft’s second stab at the series. Though it’s the most prolific, cinematic and biggest foray we’ve got yet, that’s not exactly saying a lot. Rife with bugs, an uninspired story and a dull quest structure make even the prettiest ...

The Avatar films are great fun but have never blown me away with original storytelling. Instead, the translation of familiar formulas into a vibrant and visually arresting alien world elevates the films. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora follows that same tack, featuring first-person exploration and combat that borrows liberally from franchises like Far Cry. But here, an enormous and detailed fantasy world breathes life into the experience, making it both more engaging and sometimes needlessly obtuse – but always with a flair for the source material.

If you’re a fan of Ubisoft’s open world formula, you’re going to love Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. No, it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t have to. The gorgeous world of Pandora makes for a fantastic playground that simply begs to be explored. You may search for flaws and futile comparisons to other games; you will find that exploration can be frustrating when you seem irremediably lost while trying to climb a mountain, or when you are tired of placing markers because the compass doesn’t work as it should.
