Reviewing a new Final Fantasy game is tough. Final Fantasy 16 bears the weight of expectation, a burden that comes with the territory of its iconic name. Each loosely associated entry redefines what it means to be a Final Fantasy, and every fan has a checklist of what aspects of the series need to come together to make the perfect experience. So, can it live up to the titans that came before it while carving out a distinct identity of its own?

Final Fantasy XV is about adventure and excitement. There are oddities, and it's not the FF you're used to, but it's a good time with some good boys, and has an unexpected emotional resonance to it. Sometimes it seems like it shouldn't work, but it does.

It’s not said enough – sometimes, it’s OK for games to get “fixed” after launch. Developers aren’t always able to control their release schedules, and when a game is better and more robust a year later, that’s a win for everyone. Look at No Man’s Sky, for example.  In the case of FFXV, it was already an excellent game. Now, it’s damned near perfection. If you’ve been waiting, you get a great port, and one that’s content complete and still expecting more updates this ye...

Seeing as it's been a decade in development, Final Fantasy XV is one of the most ambitious games ever created. Now that it's out, has this ambition steered the team in the right direction or did it get the best of them?

How do the adventures of Noctis and his friends hold up? It's full of surprises, for better or worse. It is, however, a road trip worth taking.

Final Fantasy XV exhibits some fun action combat and a few examples of good level design. However, it's lacking in its other RPG elements, especially the pacing of the plot.

Ten long years have culminated in a game that's a bit rough around the edges, but enjoyable. Kudos to Hajime Tabata for getting this thing done. For me it was enjoyable throughout, and I'll be seeing this one through until I have the platinum trophy, but I think that feat is reserved for only the most dedicated franchise fans.

Final Fantasy XV takes place in the world of Eos. With the exception of the Kingdom of Lucis, all the world’s countries and territories are under control of the empire of Nifleheim and their vast magitek armies. Noctis Lucis Caelum, the crown prince of Lucis sets out to marry his childhood love Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, but on the way discovers news of Nifleheim’s betrayal of Lucis on the day of the peace treaty signing. Thus his quest transcends into one not only of love, but of recovery...

Final Fantasy XV is a strange beast. I'll spoil the core point of the review by saying that this is certainly a return to form for the series. As part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy series, it can be closely linked to the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy of games. Of course, it used to be called Final Fantasy Versus XIII but was spun off of that and eventually spawned into a universe of itself, having an anime, movie and an upcoming VR game based around it.

To sum up then, Final Fantasy XV is by no means perfect – in fact it’s far from it – but it’s hard to not be enraptured by it. It falters in a few key areas but it has its heart in the right place, making it hard to bear a long term grudge against it. When it’s at its best, generally during the latter third of the game, the results are often phenomenal. At its worst, you’ll wonder how it can pass as a Final Fantasy game. On the whole though, the good far outweighs the bad, making Final...

Final Fantasy XV is a unique offering, both for the franchise and RPGs in general. Placing the onus on the relationships of your party, rather than the narrative, has meant that this is a game that strikes not just an emotional chord, but a personal one. While Final Fantasy stalwarts will likely balk at the action-heavy combat, the spirit of the franchise remains, and is better served here than it has been in many years.

The story, which is much better understood initially if you have watched the Final Fantasy XV anime, starts with Prince Noctis embarking on a road trip with his three trusted companions in order to wed his fiancée Luna. During this trip, his car, the Regalia (essentially the royal car) breaks down, his home is attacked, and he is left to figure things out with his three friends.

Final Fantasy XV had quite a lot to live up to after so many years, and while it may have taken a decade to get here, the journey was worth the wait with this phenomenal entry in the series.

We joke about Duke Nukem Forever taking over 15 years to release, but Square Enix has two games releasing this year that took close to the same amount of time. First up is Final Fantasy XV, which was originally known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, went on a hiatus, and then after discombobulated news, was reborn as Final Fantasy XV (FFXV). It’s been ten years since the original name was announced, and now that it’s finally here, was it worth the long wait?

As a game, Final Fantasy XV inhabits that special place that titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt; Fallout 3, New Vegas, and 4; and the Elder Scrolls games do. While you’re playing it, you’re an inhabitant of its world, and it’s a place that can be almost as vivid as reality at times, with its own history, lore, and culture. As a Final Fantasy, FFXV returns the series to the wonderment that Final Fantasy VII inspired in a generation of gamers. While it might not have the cultural impact of FFVII, it has the same precision and attention to...

Bold and brave, Final Fantasy XV brings back some of what made FF special to begin with. It's rough around the edges, but that's okay: where it counts, it's got heart.

When I’m riding chocobos across the beach at dusk with my three friends and hunting iconic Final Fantasy monsters in a huge, picturesque open world, Final Fantasy XV feels like nearly everything I could want from a modern Final Fantasy. But when it funnels me into linear scenarios and drab, constricted spaces that plunge the simplistic combat into chaos, my blood boils a bit. There is so much good here, so much heart - especially in the relationships between Noctis and his sworn brothers. It just comes with some changes and compromises that were, at times, difficult for this long-time...

As I’m typing this up now, I’m seeing a future where people buy Final Fantasy XV due to some of the more positive assessments (like this one), and walk away disappointed. Because if you loathe JRPGs, XV is not going to make you a believer. In a way it’s silly that Square spent 10 years making this, and it feels like a really shiny version of something it would have actually made 10 years ago. While a complete overhaul of the genre would certainly suit someone’s needs, XV suits mine just fine.

Final Fantasy XV is a road trip that comes dangerously close to running out of gas, coasting on fumes long enough to deliver a rich and rewarding open-world experience that embraces the bond of friendship just as much as the thrill of hunting for rare treasure and beasts. The concept of hitting the open road in a convertible with three friends is largely successful, consisting of pit stops at roadside dinners, detours to lakes for a quiet evening of fishing, campfires under the stars, and expeditions through the wilderness to find a landmark for a group photo. Final Fantasy XV...

Against all odds, Square Enix's second attempt at a Final Fantasy MMO is back for another shot at glory. Does it have what it takes to survive in a market that has changed significantly in the last few years, or should Yoshi-P have left Eorzea crushed beneath Bahamut's wrath?
