Gotham Knights is a dark, dense and surprisingly gripping action adventure that almost manages to step up to the level of the very best of the Arkham series. There's a cracking story to dive into here, a huge and wonderfully detailed city, tons of lore for Bat fans, brutally crunchy combat, four cool superheroes to get a handle on and some of Gotham's most infamous villains to take down as you fight to prevent an all-out turf war. We were slightly concerned going into this one but, as it turns out, we needn't have been. If you can ignore some...

Gotham Knights feels like a regression of the Arkham series in both gameplay quality and how it runs on Deck. While recent updates have made it better and more playable, it still can't perform in all the areas it needs to.

After playing Gotham Knights, I couldn’t shake the feeling that a lot of it had the air of an Arkham-verse fan game. While there is something there, you can almost reach out and touch the design-by-committee elements and witness the souls of some of the developers leaving their bodies. If you’re looking for another “Open World: The Game,” this one has you covered.

A decent superhero game with fun combat and story elements, but it struggles to live up to its Arkham series predecessors. An interesting game concept but it falls short in some departments.

In the end, Gotham Knights is, like the studio’s earlier contribution to the saga, Batman: Arkham Origins, a decent game haunted by the notion of not being the main event.

It has been over seven years since Batman: Arkham Knight graced our consoles. While not exactly a Batman game, Gotham Knights aims to fill the gap while Rocksteady Studios prepares their Suicide Squad game. But the Arkham series represents some big shoes to fill. Did WB Games Montréal hit the mark without Bruce Wayne’s assistance? Find out in our Gotham Knights PS5 review.

Here’s the most obvious statement I will ever say in this site, one that will also paint me as a boomer: I don’t understand social media at times. It feels like every now and then the internet collectively tries to overreact towards a new (or old) piece of pop culture, calling it “the worst new thing ever” from out of nowhere, most due to coattail riding and herd mentality. Liz Phair’s self-titled album from 2003. Nu-metal as a whole. Resident Evil 6. The whole Bayonetta 3 voice act...

Not unlike a costumed vigilante tasked with cleaning up a crime-riddled city, Gotham Knights has its work cut out for it. For starters, it’s a Batman game without a Batman, trading the Caped Crusader for an arguably less interesting quartet of sidekick protagonists. It also arrives in the shadow of Rocksteady Studios’ acclaimed Arkham series, considered not just the best Bat games, but some of the greatest interactive superhero adventures period.

Gotham Knights is a new breed of Batman game. Packing four unique playable characters, this open-world action game shines brightest when you’re experimenting with character-specific abilities or on patrol with a buddy in two-player co-op. Unfortunately, its rough edges leave a noticeable mark, and the poor writing and seriously disappointing performance on next-gen hardware hold it back.

There is a moment early on in Gotham Knights when it becomes unequivocally clear that this is not going to be an Arkham game. The moment itself isn't necessarily important from the outset, but what the moment represents most certainly is. Players are immediately made aware that they are no longer burdened with being Batman; that they no longer have to live up to his legacy. But they do have to live for him, and that is where our game so crucially begins.

Gotham Knights is a lot of fun, and for someone looking to mindlessly beat criminals as a superhero, it's an easy recommendation. Yet, anyone interested in anything more than that is going to face a lot of disappointment with its story beats, gameplay elements, individual features, and many other elements.

After getting past (or at least getting used to) the game's various snags, I did begin to appreciate some of the combat formula's additions. The Momentum system is a fun new feature that adds several extra attacks to each character's arsenal. Finding a combination of basic attacks and Momentum strikes that works proved to be one of the more enjoyable aspects of Gotham Knights and something that I definitely could not have gotten out of previous Batman titles. It doesn't have the same "ballet" flow that I would get out of the classics, but there's a lot more variety now...

With Batman dead, his four proteges have big boots to fill in Gotham Knights. Thankfully Warner Bros. Montreal has largely pulled it off, creating a Gotham City that's filled with things to do, and letting the four characters' contrasting styles show in combat and their personalities come through in the story.

It’s been over seven years since Batman: Arkham Knight and DC Comics fans have been pining for a big triple-A action/adventure game. After that lengthy wait, Gotham Knights is here to bring players back to a gorgeous but now Batman-less Gotham City. Fans can stop holding their breath — Gotham Knights was well worth the wait, even if it does fall into one of the biggest traps of the open-world genre.

Unfortunately, none of these pros are really enough to outweigh the cons. Gotham Knights isn't a total waste of time, but it is a bit of a headscratcher. By the time the credits roll, it's hard not to feel like the worst moments of this video game were the video game, and the best moments were the ones that were totally uninteractive. If Gotham Knights were a comic miniseries or, say, a television series on the CW, it would be easy to recommend. As a video game, though, it's more of an odd, u...

It’s hard to imagine what dying and then being resurrected by a magical chemical pool would do to a person, but Jason sure seems overly angry, so much so that he’s willing to use lethal force to protect Gotham. He lacks the kind of noble commitment to virtue that the rest of the Batfamily has, so he looks down upon them and stands apart. He thinks the others “don’t have what it takes” to do things right, so in most cases, he’s the biggest roadblock to these four heroes assembling as a proper team.

Warner Bros. attempt at getting things going again with Gotham Knights feels largely flat thanks to unwieldy movement and a world that is more “checklist” than immersive, but in small doses it can be fun, and the heroes all feel unique and work well in co-op multiplayer.

When it comes to superhero titles, many would consider the Batman: Arkham series to be the gold standard. Creating a captivating open world to explore with lots to do, many hidden secrets to find, and memorable, addictive combat—the Arkham trilogy is loved, and with good reason. Gotham Knights, from developer WB Games Montréal, is set in a similar Batman universe but with a co-op twist, and has the unenviable task of trying to meet the lofty expectations of its Arkham predecessors. Despite...

Gotham Knights is up there with Elden Ring as a Game of the Year contender. Its fast, responsive, and action-packed combat is surpassed only by a narrative that had me glued from the very first cutscene. A must-play for fans of open-world titles, and an easy pickup for anyone invested with the Gotham Knights or DC Universe.

Perhaps you could argue that the streets of Gotham feel a little empty at times, or that when facing off against a large number of enemies, the combat gets a little messy, but it’s hard to truly find fault with Gotham Knights. It’s an immensely enjoyable adventure from beginning to end, with lots to offer to Batman fans even though they don’t get to play as the caped crusader himself. Don’t let the lack of a performance mode put you off: with stunning visuals, varied gameplay and great online co-op, Gotham Knights is one of the best games of the...

Gotham Knights step out of the shadows of the Dark Knight and provide a breath of fresh air with four unique characters that provide a different approach to protecting Gotham. Gotham Knights' combat may feel stripped down, but it still provides some of the best melee combat on the market. Gotham City has plenty of crimes to solve and challenges to get through. It's just a shame some of its traversals can be so bothersome.

DC’s caped crusader is an icon whose legacy is evident in each form of media. From comics to the cinema, Kane and Finger’s masked vigilante has left audiences in awe since his inception in 1939. Although he has swooped on to consoles several times before, it was Rocksteady’s 2009 effort, Batman: Arkham Asylum that truly captured the essence of the Dark Knight. Due to its brutal ballroom battle system and gorgeous gothic design, the game became an instant hit, spawning several releases. An often-overlooked entry in the series is Arkham Origins. With its stellar story which features some of the...
