PSVR 2 landed on February 22, 2023 and one of the big announcements was the addition of a VR mode for developer, Polyphony Digital’s,  Gran Turismo 7. This was an announcement long in coming and one time, before COVID, the expectation was GT7 would be a PSVR 2 launch title.

Gran Turismo 7 is a welcome return for the series after the lackluster GT Sport, even though there are some flaws that are mostly associated with microtransactions. The visuals and racing physics are top-notch as always and the game's unique campaign that teaches you about the history of the automotive industry will keep car enthusiasts and newbies alike engaged for hours as they play through Gran Turismo 7.

Jeremy Clarkson once said in the launch trailer for Forza Motorsport 4, back in 2011, that we, lovers of speed, car enthusiasts, were an endangered species. In this day and age, loving cars is seen as being a villain to the future of the planet. As he masterfully mentions in that trailer, video games are the true modern safe haven for us gearheads, a place we can collect and race beautiful machines without feeling guilty, without worrying about the harm we’re doing for the environment. Nowa...

Gran Turismo has been a gold standard for the simulation-racing genre for over 25 years. The franchise has continually served as a showcase for PlayStation’s latest hardware both from visual and technical standpoints. Gran Turismo 7 is no different in this regard; the racing has never felt more precise, nor have the vehicles ever looked truer to life. However, in the time since that initial entry, the field has caught up to Gran Turismo. This new entry is still an excellent driving simulation, but it’s no longer lapping the competition.

Kazunori Yamauchi wasn't lying when he promised a paradise that celebrated car culture. Gran Turismo 7 is undoubtedly the most immersive driving sim out there today. It celebrates the series' rich history from 1997 and brings many new additions into the formula. For all fans, from those who just want to drive some cool looking cars to those who are die-hard competitive racers, this game has got something for you.

Gran Turismo 7 isn’t the second coming of racing games, and it doesn’t need to be. It still captures that feeling of spending hours and hours admiring your garage and flipping through car facts from a few of the best entries in the series, and still feels like a big-budget racer.

Gran Turismo 7 is probably the best racing simulation game on the market right now, something that every car fanatic needs to own. Gran Turismo 7 allows you to fine-tune everything from the motor, to the circuits, to the paint, and more. Everything can be made just the way you want it to be. Gran Turismo 7 is also the BEST looking game on the PlayStation 5… PERIOD. Everything is reflective, from the paint to the chrome on the wheel covers… It’s AMAZING. If you’re a racing fanatic, then this is the game for you.

Suppose somebody came up to me tomorrow and told me that I'm an incredibly sexy, intelligent and witty person. In that case, I'd think they were slightly exaggerating my qualities, were wanting something from me, and then I'd pay the relevant escort agency for the service of that fine person. Suppose somebody else came up to me and stated that the Gran Turismo 7 development team featured Roger Taylor heading up a group of people with mechaphilia; I'd believe that in a heartbeat while also telling them to get the hell off of my Hyundai.

Time will tell how fans will react to Gran Turismo 7's microtransactions, but putting them aside, what's there is still a deep racing game experience that will keep fans of the genre busy for hours on end. It's a gorgeous racing game and while it's not going to be knocking down any boundaries to convert non-racing game fans, Gran Turismo 7 should greatly appeal to its target audience.

Finally, Polyphony Digital takes us back to the future. Gran Turismo 7 recovers all singleplayer features fans loved the series for, and gives them modern look. But the game itself doesn’t feel modern at all, sadly. Forza got far away.

Gran Turismo 7 marks the series’ 25th anniversary, and this long-awaited PS5 sequel is both a celebration of Polyphony Digital’s trailblazing GT franchise and of racing in general. The Tokyo-based studio’s love of cars is infectious; I wish I could love anything as much as they clearly love sitting behind the wheel. If this isn’t immediately evident from its lengthy, historical opening cinematic, then it most certainly is when you hit the tarmac, the intricacies of each car’s handling authentically replicated across its shockingly photo-realistic tracks.

The first Gran Turismo title debuted in 1997, almost 25 years ago. It was the first game of its kind on home consoles. From humble beginnings with Motor Toon Grand Prix in 1994, Polyphony Digital, with Kazunori Yamauchi at the helm, built an empire. They used their obsessive attention to detail and love of cars to ensure that Gran Turismo is the undisputed yardstick when it comes to visual fidelity and near simulation-style racing on PlayStation.

On PlayStation 5, Gran Turismo 7 shines because it simply has no competition. Compared to the entire genre, however, this is a much-delayed premiere of a somewhat outdated game.

Has Gran Turismo 7 fulfilled all of our wildest dreams? Unfortunately not. And for some players the new career structure, unwieldy menus and drone-like A.I. might really knock their duck off. But for those prepared to scratch under the surface and accept that not everything can be perfect, there’s one hell of a racing game to be enjoyed here. Although to call it a racing game is perhaps reductive: this is about the love of cars just as much it is about racing them. Whether you want to learn about the history of some of the most iconic cars in...

If it’s ever tempting to think that Polyphony has been left behind by the times, we should remember that the Sport mode is its greatest achievement of the past decade, and that it remains without peer in its field. And if it seems striking that GT and its closest current mass-market competitor, Forza Horizon, now seem to be operating in different worlds — stylistically, philosophically, structurally — we should consider ourselves lucky to be able to enjoy two such distinctive approaches, both executed at the highest level. With GT7, Gran Turismo continues to be a glorious anomaly: a game made...

There are only a few first-party, flagship titles that have repeatedly set the bar for a shiny new console in the past, and Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo series has always been one of them. The PS5 has had quite a few releases already that tested its mettle (i.e. Horizon Zero Dawn Forbidden West for one) and pushed it pretty far graphically. Now, after 2,500+ miles of racing in Gran Turismo 7, it’s time to reveal what I’ve been up to in the revamped world of GT, and if this is the latest PS5 release to set a new benchmark.

There are labours of love, and then there's Gran Turismo 7. From famed developer Polyphony Digital and series creator Kazunori Yamauchi, it's abundantly clear every single member of the studio has a passion for cars. In fact, we might even be selling them short. Gran Turismo 7 is a game born out of love. It's just as much about the engines under the hood as it is about the drivers behind the wheel and the minds that crafted the motors. If you didn't already have an appreciation for cars before Gran Turismo 7, you almost certainly will after.

All in all, Gran Turismo 7 is looking like it could be the best racing game of 2022. There are so many other superlatives you can go with for this game like it's the best-looking PS5 game or it's one of the best PlayStation exclusives of this generation so far, but the important thing is that the game is just straight-up fun. Despite a few stumbles here and there, the shine of Gran Turismo 7 greatly exceeds the negatives and makes it a must-have for anyone that's looking for their next PS5 title.

While most of my thoughts above may be interpreted as negatives, I genuinely feel that Gran Turismo 7 is the PS5's killer app. It doesn’t offer cinematic visuals like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, nor does it carry the same core-gamer street cred as Demon's Souls, but it delivers an ocean of top-tier content for those who can’t resist the allure of horsepower. The presentation is a bit odd in 2022 and I would have liked to get ray-traced visuals in gameplay, but it doesn’t detract from the high you can get when shaving a few tenths on a flying...

Gran Turismo 7 takes everything that was excellent about GT Sport's fantastic multiplayer, high fidelity cars and circuits and innovative Scapes mode, and builds up a more traditional GT experience around it. It's got its own quirky new ideas which will likely be passing diversions to most, but at its core, this is the Gran Turismo you know and love. Broad and accessible, but with depth, nuance and competitive racing for those keen to find it.
