Metal Gear Survive had the potential to grow into something unique but now it’s just an uninspired mish-mash of poorly balanced systems that translates to an experience that feels like a chore. The story is frustrating, the only aspects that are great are the ones carried over from Metal Gear Solid 5 and the overall gameplay loop is monotonous. Metal Gear Survive ironically won’t survive the test of time, though in several years’ time you’ll probably not be able to play it anyway.

While it's a slow build and even by the end of the game some elements still annoyed me, I honestly had more fun with Metal Gear Survive than I would have ever expected and I'd like to see the game's formulas built upon.

You better have to choose if it’s worth spending your spare cash, because it might not be the game for you and it might be for others.

All of the issues that I’ve outlined with Metal Gear Survive essentially boil down to one thing: the vast majority of the game feels boring. It takes quite a long time for certain aspects of the game to stop feeling tedious, and its very easy to feel discouraged from playing altogether as it takes so long for the game to feel like its actually going somewhere. If you can be bothered to sit through hours of hunting, completing repetitive missions and accumulating skill points at a painfully ...

Metal Gear Survive is a unique entry to the series, it is not untrue to the series on many levels. Metal Gear Survive is a difficult and unforgiving game. Metal Gear Survive requires a lot of time, effort and patience to get the most out of it. It was touted as a Metal Gear zombie game, yet it really isn’t. So what is it then? Well, to be honest it is all in the name. It is a no frills survival game and trust me, you will have to play hard to survive. You will spend many hours gathering wat...

Most of you have probably already made up your mind about Metal Gear Survive. I think Survive has some redeeming qualities and, had it focused firmly on its multiplayer, I may have enjoyed the experience more. As it stands, there are just so many better titles in the survival genre, it's hard to recommend this game to anybody. I'm sad to say that Metal Gear Survive has squeezed any ounce of hope I had for this series I only recently got into.

No, it is not a good Metal Gear game. Yes it is somewhat difficult to love thanks to a laborious and shonky opening act. Yet Metal Gear Survive is a good survival game underneath the grime of its controversial existence. Whether people will give it the chance to show that is a whole other issue.

Metal Gear Survive is the game I want it to be about... 10% of the time. When there’s a rare section where stealth is the best approach. When I just manage to defeat the final wave on a protection mission, thanks to strategic placement of defences. When I’m thinking my way out of a tense situation, moments away from being overwhelmed - by zombies, rather than starvation or suffocation.

So, as this rather short paragraph on the story might let you comprehend, Metal Gear Survive is a decent effort as far as you realize what it actually is and don’t expect it to be a story-based entry in the series you loved and a game with its roots grounded in multiplayer. While the first part has never been meant to become a reality, the second is to a good extent what Konami longs for and will possibly be in the months to come. Today, it lacks ambition but does an acceptable job into rew...

Look beyond the title, a tenuous link to Hideo Kojima’s universe, and the fact it uses Konami’s wonderful looking FOX Engine, and Survive might as well be called “Survival Game #637”. But if it was, would you even be bothering to read this?

The single player, oddly, is the best part of Metal Gear Survive. I say “oddly” because it’s billed as a co-op game primarily. But the online multiplayer is just sort of “Horde Mode”, and we’ve all done that again and again for a decade now. Would I recommend buying Metal Gear Survive? Not yet. It’s not awful, but it’s also just so very mediocre that it doesn’t deserve the $40 it’ll cost you. On Steam sale, maybe when it’s $20 and you’re jonesing for a decent single pl...

Metal Gear Survive is the first entry since Konami and series creator Hideo Kojima’s contentious split, and it shows. It features a non-canon, spin-off story and veers away from its stealth roots in favor of a survivalist approach. But while that might sound like heresy to fans, the most damning thing about Survive is how it squanders its own promise. It buries Metal Gear Solid V’s fantastic core mechanics beneath an abysmal campaign, skewed survival systems, and a tedious grind for resources.

Konami's popular stealth action series has been entertaining gamers for over three decades. Now that Hideo Kojima has left the company, does this crazy spin-off offer a worthwhile experience or are you better off sticking to the classics?

Even with its budget price in mind, though, we can't recommend Metal Gear Survive to anyone, perhaps especially those that consider themselves dedicated fans of the franchise. The game flatout fails to capture the Metal Gear spirit, and while it has some positive qualities, they aren't enough to redeem it. Those that manage to stick with the game for the long haul may end up enjoying it a bit more than others, but most Metal Gear Survive players may find it difficult to force themselves through its tortuous beginning hours.

It’s a sad truth that still puts a pit in my stomach, but Kojima and Konami are done. Konami still owns the Metal Gear name though, and they still want to make video games for it. Please let them. A new Hollywood reboot of your favorite franchise does not retroactively ruin the quality of the old movies, and Metal Gear Survive does not suddenly make the Metal Gear Solid series any less brilliant. Metal Gear Survive, instead, stands alongside those as perhaps the strongest spinoff in the franchise to date. Metal Gear Solid as we know it may be finished...

When you ignore the shady underbelly of microtransactions and in-game purchases, Metal Gear Survive offers a fairly solid, if somewhat congested, survival game experience. It’s certainly not the best Metal Gear spin-off we’ve seen thus far – that honor goes to Acid – but it’s not completely horrible either. In fact, when you let yourself get truly immersed in the insipid and rote story Survive is trying to tell, the game does have its occasional flashes of brilliance.

Metal Gear Survive is an interesting amalgam of survival elements, small references to the series that influenced it, zombie games, and online titles. It's not a Metal Gear game, which makes me wonder why it was titled as such in the first place as it's not attracted fans of the series, and in fact has done just the opposite. It would have fared better, perhaps, as a new IP with less recycled assets. But as it is, it's an interesting and wholly engrossing exercise in survival that I enjoyed more with every hour that passed. Don't go into the game...

A Metal Gear game in name only, Survive is a decent – though often frustrating - survival game with a few unique tricks up its sleeve. While the Metal Gear name brings with it a certain weight of expectation, as long as you don't go in expecting Metal Gear Solid 6, you'll be fine.

Arriving with very little fanfare from both its core franchise following and Konami itself, Metal Gear Survive is going to be judged unfairly thanks to the baggage of Hideo Kojima’s exit and what the Japanese publisher has become in recent years. This spin-off ditches what made the Metal Gear Solid series so special for the most part, but what it retains and introduces amalgamates into something really quite fascinating. There will be those who write it off completely, but for anyone willing to give Metal Gear Survive a chance, what they’ll find is a compelling, addictive, and ultimately rewarding experience...

This whole affair has made me realize that perhaps these sort of premium minigames should be relegated to bonuses in major releases with real campaigns. Capcom tried to do the same thing with Resident Evil‘s Mercenaries and crashed and burned with their standalone 3DS release. Metal Gear Survive should have been a free-to-play game just like Grasshopper’s Let it Die or an actual Metal Gear release. It doesn’t accomplish either aim.

So much of Metal Gear Survive is repeating the same thing over and over again in single- and multiplayer. Defending the same points from the same zombies. Exploring the same zones for the same materials. Mining the same resources for the same small amounts of gear. But after learning the ropes and learning to set your own personal goals within that loop, there’s an odd comfort in the formula, and I can see myself returning to expand my end-game base out of my own completionist urges. Survive might not compare well to the tactical espionage action that’s defined the Metal...
