State of Decay 2 earned its place as one of my favorite games years ago. As the updates continued, it further cemented itself there. I always say the best stories a game can tell, are the ones you generate yourself. Every community, whether you succeed or fail, generates those stories. From dramatic suspense where you rush to cure an infected survivor to the blockbuster action moments of bailing out of an exploding car amid a swarm of hungry zombies. It’s all there.

State of Decay 2 has some fun additions that can keep things interesting. Just not quite interesting enough (especially when contending with a clutch of performance issues).

State of Decay 2 basically takes everything that made the first game enjoyable, tosses in base building and more interesting NPCs. The combat is just as visceral and you’ll still fight to stay alive in this post-apocalyptic zombie-filled world. A tad repetitive at times but still has more than enjoy to keep you entertained.

I’m addicted to this game, especially playing it with friends. Playing solo gives you that constant on edge feeling, but when you’re playing with friends it can lessen that – unless your friends are just as on edge as you are.

Due to its numerous technical issues and underwhelming gameplay, it's difficult to give State of Decay 2 a wide recommendation. However, it's easy to see how the game will appeal to a certain group of players, particularly those who consider themselves fans of the original game. And, since State of Decay 2 is available through Xbox Game Pass, anyone who is signed up for Microsoft's Netflix-like game distribution service might as well give it a shot. It's likely that they won't be terribly impressed by the experience and won't keep it in their game rotation for long, but there's also...

State of Decay 2’s experience will boil down to how talented you are at surviving. The game challenges you to last for as long as possible. It has its moments where it can drag on, and if you’re after a game where you just want to kill mindlessly, this isn’t for you. Zombie survival simulator though? It does what it set out to achieve.

Finally, State of Decay 2 is a good game that lacks a bit of ambition when it comes to deliver certain things such as multiplayer and other core mechanics that could’ve been smoothed up. At any rate, it must be valued for what it is at the base: a game that is sold at $29,99 and, in the tradition of the original, will look into expansions in order to get bigger and more filled with content. It’s ages distant from the model of Sea of Thieves as it begins with a full slate of content you’...

State of Decay 2 is repetitive, but fun when it works. When it doesn’t, you'd be forgiven for a few rage quits. In a game where any misstep can result in losing an important survivor for good, to have this happen not due to my own mistakes, but a bug or glitch, is frustrating. The RPG progression of survivors mixed in with the community building makes the repetitive structure work and rewards players that wish to continue cultivating new communities. The game comes at half the price of most high-profile releases or as part of the Game Pass library and...

State of Decay 2’s zombie-infested maps are good places to scavenge, fight, and survive in. Combat is satisfyingly brutal and the special zombies inspire some real fear of permanent death, even though the Blood Plague turns out to be more of a sniffle. But the bugs are just as persistent as the zombies, and after a dozen or so hours the repetition of both eventually take their toll, making the appeal of replaying feel more limited than I’d expected for a sandbox RPG.

If you’re looking for a compelling and atmospheric take on the zombie genre that’s more Walking Dead than Left 4 Dead, State of Decay 2 is an imperfect but enjoyable sequel to the superior original. The gameplay loop of scavenging, crafting and killing can begin to wear thin, but the human element is capable of pulling you back in. Tackling the world with others in tow may decimate the game’s carefully constructed atmosphere, but those multiplayer shenanigans will probably be wild enough to distract from the host of technical issues that simply refuse to die.

As you can easily guess from its title, State of Decay 2 is the sequel to the zombie apocalypse simulator made by Undead Labs and released as an Xbox Live Arcade title for the Xbox 360 in 2013, before landing on PC as well.

State of Decay 2 improves upon its predecessor in almost every way. Although the game still suffers from a host of bugs and lacks much of a focused narrative, it succeeds at being a tremendously enjoyable and addictive experience.

When making a sequel, most studios make it a priority to build on the strengths of the original while patching up weaknesses. State of Decay 2 gets the first part right. Five years after the first game clawed its way to cult-favorite status, Undead Labs has released a follow-up that offers incremental improvements over its predecessor – and co-op – but the sense that this game isn’t ready for wide release is as tough to shake as a feral zombie.

State of Decay 2 isn't a bad game but it doubles down on too much of the first game's failings. For newcomers, the repetitive combat and mission variety, glitches and lack of polish can be a turnoff but the base-building and survivor management manage to shine.

A grotesque and bloated corpse – dead, yet still alive – shambles towards you, groaning gutturally. The dead have come back to life, and … Wait, you’ve heard this one before? You’re right, the whole zombie thing is getting a little played out. Metal Gear Survive, The Walking Dead, Dead Rising, there are a ton of properties that hinge exclusively on the premise that dead things aren’t staying that way. State of Decay 2 hits Xbox One and Game Pass this week and is the latest game featuring a zombie apocalypse. Though there are some smart ideas here, unacceptably low...

State of Decay 2 is the best State of Decay has ever been. The addition of a co-op multiplayer mode will appeal to anyone looking for a little shared zombie-survival; and you’ll find yourself getting surprisingly attached to your characters, despite the fact they have relatively little backstory. The amount of freedom is genuinely impressive, as is the sheer mayhem that the game can devolve into. True, its surfeit of busywork does it no favours, but if you can immerse yourself enough in the game to overlook that, you’ll find that State of Decay 2 offers more than enough to...

Having looted a nearby neighborhood, my vehicle loaded up with rucksacks of supplies and crafting materials, I slam the trunk down, fill the tank with the fuel I brought along with me, and hop into the driver’s seat. The horizon is littered with the mangled bodies of the undead, and as the sun sets, a zombie falls from the heavens right in front of my car. This moment pretty much sums up my time with State of Decay 2 – an engaging survival experience with some seriously glaring performance issues.

State of Decay 2 comes together as a game that feels designed for players who like to make checklists and chip away at long-term tasks. That notion might sound contradictory to existence in a zombie apocalypse, where death comes fast and often, but engaging with the game from this perspective makes its rough edges seem more like minor smudges. State of Decay 2‘s unique approach to survival and management might not appeal to everyone, but it certainly feels like an instant cult classic.

State of Decay 2 features hordes of undead creatures roaming around just waiting to take a bite, but it would be a mistake to simply rule it out as “just another zombie game”. Indeed, there are zeds to kill and plenty of tropes that you’d expect from the genre, but State of Decay 2 is about survival and the community that you can build when you band together with others. There are certainly some adrenaline pumping moments which quickly remind you that your life is at risk, but everythin...

State of Decay is a scrappy, somewhat coarse game on its surface level. Its systems are poorly explained, its textures lacking in detail, its gunplay entirely functional. But its systems have a clockwork-like beauty, interlocking with rare grace to create a vivid, meaningful world in which player-driven stories arise with delightful frequency. Its dialogue is passable, its pre-scripted missions workmanlike and its interface fussy. But look past the ragged façade and you'll discover one of the finest open world games yet made, an experience that trades cinematic sheen for a different sort of impact, one that leaves you grieving over...
