With all that being said, while I don’t think Stray is great enough to compete with the very best indie games released (both this year and the last), it’s still a good game. And for 30 USD it’s not going to break the bank either. Especially for those wanting a slightly different platforming experience, one without a bipedal at the helm.

The game opens with the type of cinematic slow pan you see in prestigious games from top-flight studios like Naughty Dog—except, instead of people, it focuses on a group of wild house cats. You can immediately tell these cats are all best friends, spending their days gallivanting around derelict concrete structures, evidently free from human masters who didn’t give them nearly enough canned tuna, probably, the jerks. It’s not long, though, until the cat you control is separated from the pack. It is a heartbreaking moment, seeing this small creature—who does not have a name but is modeled after one...

Stray is a phenomenal, if compact, feline adventure that captures cats perfectly – even if they do find themselves in a bizarrely beautiful robotic world.

The obsession with cats that seems to permeate the internet can be exhausting at times. Don’t get me wrong, I love cats and would personally have a cat in my home instead of a dog, simply because of what the animals are. Dogs are adoring creatures who need a huge amount of attention in order to live their best lives, and I’m already giving that to my wife, my kids and my game collection. Cats are warm bags of anger who intermittently decide who they are and are not annoyed by, and I can c...

Don’t dismiss Stray as merely a cat simulator, as this adventure game will appeal to more than just feline fanatics. While the chance to play as an adorable kitty is appealing, the real star of the show is the game’s richly-detailed cyberpunk world. Only Stray's short length and simplistic gameplay hold it back from ranking top of the litter.

Stray is a fantastic exploration game, and the execution of playing as a cat has paid off extremely well. Stray is a solid fit regardless of age, and its low cost is justifiable to the amount of content and enjoyment you get from the game.

Further enhancing the game’s atmosphere is its music, with a synth-focused soundtrack, ranging from heart-pounding and fast-paced, to subtle and mellow. While exploring and investigating Stray’s mysteries, the soundtrack lures you forward, subconsciously motivating you to press onward. It’s just one of the many things that add to the immersion, making Stray hard to put down.

Stray is a story of belonging and finding your way back home. This tale can be played on Deck fine at 30 FPS, but you may find a better experience elsewhere.

Everything in Stray works together so well; the characters, the story, and being a cat is so realistic and fun that it is so rewarding. I can't recommend this title enough; it is my game of the year for 2022 meow!

It's true that some may be underwhelmed by how Stray handles its platforming and by how short it is, but these issues are easily overlooked because of the high quality found throughout the rest of the game. Stray is a genuinely unique gaming experience and is worth checking out for the cat alone. Stray looks great, plays great, and accomplishes exactly what it set out to do. It's a must-play, especially since it's available at a budget price and can be played in its entirety with a PS Plus Extra subscription.

Has a game ever had a better selling point than “you play as a cat”? But Stray doesn’t just let you take control of a character who looks like a cat — it authentically replicates the dexterity and adorableness of one, too. As you nimbly explore its cyberpunk city from his unique point-of-view, you’ll meow, you’ll lovingly cuddle up against NPCs, and you’ll occasionally get your head stuck in a paper bag. It’s all very cute — that is until the alien headcrabs latch onto your furry skull and suffocate you to death.

Stray is certainly a game that grabs your attention. The core concept of a cat exploring a dark Blade-Runner-esque post-apocalyptic world is intriguing, and the game’s vivid, ultra-detailed presentation is pretty astounding considering this game’s the work of a small first-time studio. It’s no surprise Stray immediately jumped to the top of many people’s “Most Anticipated Indies” list.

Stray is a game about being a cat. You see, explore, and mess with the world in the ways only they can. Because you're doing so in one of the more densely-packed video game worlds in recent memory, there's plenty of room for kitty antics. Luckily, Stray wastes no moment letting you fulfill any feline aspirations you may have.

Cat lover or not, Stray is a wonderful adventure worth jumping into. You’ll quickly fall in love with your adorable four-legged protagonist, but it’s just a shame it’s all over so soon. We could have spent dozens more hours exploring the fascinating world experiencing life as a curious cat. As it is, Stray may be short, but it’s perfectly formed.

Stray knows exactly what it wants to be and delivers on that premise flawlessly. Despite the game’s short duration, it leaves a strong impact, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Although the gameplay is simple, it’s made up for by the game’s stunning world, charming story, beautiful soundscape, and immersive atmosphere. Developer BlueTwelve Studio are punching well above their weight with the game’s visuals, and thankfully it’s delivered in a virtually flawless 60 fps on PS5. Stray is absolutely worth checking out, particularly if you’re subscribed to Sony’s new Playstation Plus Extra or Premium services. For me, it’s one of...

It's hard to perfectly encapsulate what Stray really sets out to do, as it is a jack of all trades, but unfortunately a master of none of them. Certain parts of this game are near masterclass, like its stealth sections, but it finds itself lost within its own identity too often, and misses the mark on more than one occasion.

Stray has managed to meet the lofty expectations put upon it once it became known that you would take control of a lone cat within a dystopia punctuated by scores of neon lighting. While some may say that it’s hard to miss with a setup like that, what developer BlueTwelve Studio has managed to fashion from the composite parts is something truly special and has us yearning for more.
