Assassin's Creed Valhalla sees the long-running franchise at an absolute high point. A much tighter, more refined and narrative-focused experience, it learns lessons from other recent open world efforts, removing much of the series' tedious open-world busywork and channelling its players through a genuinely excellent and intriguing adventure. There's still plenty of exploring, looting and collecting to be done here but it's so much more engaging, full of fun puzzles and atmospheric treasure hunts that make the downtime between story arcs all the more rewarding. This is Assassin's Creed looking and feeling better than ever.

Sadly, that string of hours, spent clambering up towers and defogging the map, bounding across the fields in a hopeful, happy loop, was the last of the fun on offer.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla builds on the open-world RPG structure of previous entries, and creates one of the most engaging experiences in the genre. While not a perfect experience of the base Xbox One console, it still holds up well as a late entry into the recent console era.

This game expands and builds off of the best parts of the newer Assassin’s Creed games and offers a gorgeous open-world RPG with a thoughtful and complex main story quest. The side quests and extra content encourage exploration of the different regions so that players really get to experience the masterfully created world in all of its glory.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla refined the new RPG formula started in Origins and improved in Odyssey. However, in an attempt to fix Odyssey’s shortcomings, the developers went too far to the opposite extreme in terms of progression.  Despite it, the game remains a treat both for the old fans and the newcomers to the series, bringing along a great protagonist, fantastic - if sometimes incoherent - story, living open world and refined gameplay.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla effortlessly plants its banner as the best open world RPG available for the new consoles. This Viking epic flexes its gore-soaked, tattooed muscles when it comes to world-building, and medieval England wows with its enchanting untamed vistas. It’s also portioned out at a steady pace and, if not for the repetitive, limited combat, Valhalla could have ranked even higher among our favourite games in the series.

I had a great time playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and was surprised by how much depth there was. This is Ubisoft’s best efforts yet at reinventing the series and Valhalla stands among the best RPGs in recent memory. Valhalla is still tied to the Ubisoft formula in some ways, but in other ways this is the largest departure from that formula an Assassin’s Creed game has gone.

Can’t get enough of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise? It has already been over two years since 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey graced the previous generation of consoles, if you can believe it. Curious to see if their take on living life as a Viking melds well with living as an Assassin? Take a leap into our Assassin’s Creed Valhalla PS5 review to see how well everything comes together on the next generation of consoles.

“Where fault can be found, the good is ignored.” – that’s a real Viking phrase, and it just so happens to reflect the repute of this game. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the twelfth instalment of the blockbuster franchise and the third of the series with an RPG focus. After a few years of ups-and-downs and some buggy messes, Valhalla doesn’t challenge many expectations. What it does do is present an exceptionally alluring and exciting world to explore, raid, and conquer. Assassin’...

The PS5 version of Assassin's Creed Valhalla is also a little less likely to have the technical problems that plague the previous generation edition of the same game. There appear to be less crashes and less graphical glitches with the new generation, although more complex errors like bizarre AI and physics issues still remain. From a purely technical standpoint, then, it's a good bet to play Assassin's Creed Valhalla on the new generation, providing those PS4 to PS5 upgrade issues don't stick.

Cut from the very best cloth of open world games, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a pleasure from start to finish. Though overwhelming in its early hours, once you settle into Eivor’s shoes, exploring England is an exhilarating journey like no other. Try as you might to focus on the main missions, the lure of exploration is too strong, and you’ll find pleasure in every tiny discovery. Is this the best Assassin’s Creed game yet? That’s difficult to say – but it might just be. Especially if you enjoy the beauty of British countryside and the contrasting brutality of viking combat.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise is one that I have a weird relationship with. For the most part I’m very critical of the franchise, even with some of the most popular games within them, whilst defending the underdogs. Brotherhood I have often said is one of the weakest games in the franchise whilst I avidly defend 2014’s French Revolution entry in Unity (after all the patches of course). There’s been a lot of inconsistency in the franchise until recently.

Swaddled with furs and tattoos – her Iron-Star flail swimming around her like the ill-behaved tentacle of an angry iron octopus – she’s a curious recruit to the Assassin’s Creed roster, not least because her propensity for violence makes her one of the game’s most unusual protagonists to date. She’s unimpressed by the pomposity of the Hidden Ones, and while she accepts the secret blade they offer her, she refuses to wear it on the underside of her wrist like the Assassins that have come before her. Eivor is a Viking, and as such, she has no desire to conceal...

But I also found myself making excuses for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla until I couldn’t any longer. It mimics the Odyssey formula but takes a step backward in almost every way. It sacrifices story for scale. It’s designed to discourage stealth in favor of epic battles. It’s true to the Viking experience, but it isn’t true to the Assassin’s Creed experience. That’s why it comes off feeling like the least essential game in the whole series. Impressive in some of its accomplishments, but inessential all the same.

Everybody has their Assassin's Creed. Mine might still be Black Flag. But Valhalla is basically Vikings vs. knights, filling out the other two sides of my personal trifecta. The assassinations might've gone soft, but the northern European world building hits hard.

The argument that Assassin’s Creed is losing its identity isn’t new, but with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, what remains from the franchises' origins is holding back the big picture. Valhalla pulls from every direction to provide a stunning, surprising world which is one of the best Ubisoft have created, but until they take a leap with the aged root at its core, greatness will always be out of reach.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise draws people in for many reasons. Over the years, it has provided stealth-focused infiltration, stylish encounters, high-seas adventures, and other elements – but not always in equal measure. Each installment hits different sweet spots for different players with varying degrees of success, but for the first time in the series, the balance feels perfect in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. With its engaging combination of combat, open-world exploration, crafted story content, and settlement management, this Viking saga is an epic with a little something for everyone.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla brings quality of life improvements to the new Assassin's Creed model but doesn't stray too far from familiar territory. If you enjoyed the last two games and want more of that, Valhalla is exactly what the doctor ordered, but there may be some who after spending 200+ hours completing Origins and Odyssey are burnt out on the format. This version does put less emphasis on the modern day lore and is more action combat oriented than stealth which may be off putting to people who prefer the classic Assassin's Creed titles. But those caveats aside, this is...

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla takes all the previous systems introduced in Origins and Odyssey, and streamlines them into a more focused experience. The game may have some flaws, and it's a shame to see the combat remains mediocre after all these years, yet Valhalla is easily the best entry in the recent trilogy. Grab your axes and shields: it's time to go a-viking!

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is my personal favorite of this new revamped trilogy of games in the franchise, but the reasons I enjoy it might be turn-offs for others. The improved combat and raiding with a platoon is the focus of the game, and while it is well-executed, it ultimately casts aside the stealth roots of the franchise.

Where AC Origins introduced RPG mechanics and AC Odyssey took a leap of faith in pushing forward, Assassin's Creed Valhalla brings back the general feeling of being an Assassin from the core action-adventure titles. It’s a shame that more care wasn’t taken to remove some of the silliness in the writing or to improve on the hit or miss voice acting. The combat doesn't feel like it's taken a step forward and, in fact, combat in Odyssey felt tighter. I'm still worried that the PC performance issues aren't entirely behind me, but I suspect those will get addressed in future updates. Ubisoft is known for their fun open worlds, but it appears that experience and previous stumbles have seen them take big steps forward, making Valhalla one of their best Assassin's Creed games in...

Assassin’s Creed Origins was an origin in more ways than one as it went through the beginnings of the Brotherhood and marked a new start for the series as a whole. Odyssey expanded upon that refresh to a fault and now Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the third iteration of this modern RPG formula. Vikings may be a promising starting point, but Valhalla is aimless and bloated beyond recognition, making for a dull and par for the Norse installment in the franchise.

Somewhere deep within Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, there’s a dazzling open-world spectacle with a handful of compelling hooks. That strong core is watered by an obsessively curated bounty of content that stretches the game — and likely players’ patience — to its limits. Still, few games offer the scope and consistency on display here, making it a perfect fixation to cap off a year that makes 873 A.D. look like a picaresque vacation.

For better or worse, the Assassin's Creed series has changed open-world games forever, with its unique mix of historical settings, parkour elements, and stealth gameplay. It didn't take long for the series, however, to become somewhat stale, mostly due to Ubisoft releasing one new entry in the series, or even multiple ones, each year, and not taking the time to look at the formula and improve it where needed. This much-needed hiatus only came in 2015 following the release of Assassin's Creed Syndicate, a hiatus that resulted in the development of the real, turning point for the series: Assassin's Creed...

Building on the strong foundations of Origins and Odyssey, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is in many ways a minor iteration of the proven formula. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a big, bold, and ridiculously beautiful entry to the series that finally delivers on the much-requested era of the Viking and the messy, political melting pot of England’s Dark Ages. It walks a fine line between historical tourism, top-shelf conspiracy theory, and veiled mysticism against the backdrop of a grounded and focused story. Fresh takes on several of the series’ established loot and quest systems help to keep the things fluid and nuanced, though progression could use refinement. There’s also a bigger than usual horde of bugs and blemishes to contend with from start to finish....
