Control is Remedy at its best: pulpy, weird, and immensely satisfying to play. Its setting is a potent concoction of '60s brutalist style and wacky sci-fi. Performance issues hamper the shootouts, and the characters are a little cold, but it's the setting and atmosphere that win the day.

I haven't found a more binge-worthy single-player action game this year. Control is wonderfully built, smartly written, and already dying for its season pass content.

The Lynchian-inspired visuals, SCP Foundation-inspired setting, and more make up a very unique experience, but severe performance issues really drag down what otherwise stands tall as one of the most unique, and entertaining games of the year.

One could easily make the argument that Control could very well be Remedy's magnum opus. Not only have they managed to craft a fun and insane world full of surreal delights and impressive visuals, but they loaded it with a massive amount of secrets to hunt for and paired it alongside some of the year's best combat. The end result is a superb third-person action game that you shouldn't miss out on. The game may end with a not-so-subtle hint at upcoming DLC set to come in the future, but the terrific gameplay leaves one wanting more. Plus, there's still...

Control is a weird, enigmatic, perplexing masterpiece. It’s also Remedy’s most well-rounded work yet. Like Jesse levitating far off the ground, Control signifies Remedy is capable of ascending to great new heights.

Control is an experience not to be missed. Remedy Entertainment has gone above and beyond to realize the game's paranormal-themed world, and the result is something so entrancing and bizarre that there's really little else to compare it to. It's proof positive that the whole can indeed be greater than the sum of its parts, but in drawing on the best that gaming had to offer, several technical issues managed to sneak in from beyond the void. Whether these glitches or bugs seem silly or nefarious will be up to individual players, but even the biggest bouts of slowdown don't...

The latest game by the creators of Max Payne and Alan Wake hasn't been hugely exciting before the release, which is a pity – because it's definitely more than just a solid shooter.

What I will praise highly is how Control indulges its own ludicrous nature every step of the way. I can't overstate the fact that it's a funny game - funny enough that the humour keeps you going from fight to fight, searching not for the source of your mysterious enemy, or for the answer to all the sub-mysteries surrounding Jesse, but for the next episode of the Threshold Kids.

Control's fun gameplay mechanics are buried under bad narrative and bad game design.

Control is definitely Remedy's best game since Alan Wake.  The sheer variety in the gameplay and fantastic presentation go a long way in making this an enjoyable experience.

While the game’s story has a few loose ends, the pacing is strong, regularly answering questions while offering new ones to uncover. Compelling characters and truly captivating ideas sell every part of the world and give it a unique charm. Add the varied, enjoyable combat, and Control is an easy game to recommend to anyone looking for solid action or an intriguing story.

Control is set in an engrossingly weird paranormal world that I couldn’t help but explore. Jesse’s versatile psychic skills and main weapon make for thrilling ranged combat. And thanks to a strong supporting cast, a well-written script, and plenty of intriguing breadcrumb trails, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my adventure through the shifting rooms of Oldest House. Jesse’s personal story feels like an afterthought next to that, but there’s enough to Control’s world that I remain invested in uncovering every secret, even though the story’s over.

The flawed storytelling squanders its full potential but even with a few missteps this is still one of the most enjoyable action games of the year.

Control is a short game and has occasional technical hiccups, but it's still a fantastic experience all-around and quite possibly Remedy's best game yet. The combat is exciting and satisfying, the game is gorgeous, and horror fans will enjoy the creepier elements. Control has shown promise since its surprise E3 2018 reveal, and we're happy to report that it meets expectations and even exceeds them.

When Jesse Faden walks into the Federal Bureau of Control and picks up the director’s handgun, she inadvertently assumes authority over the enigmatic government organization. The director’s gun is a powerful and versatile tool, but it’s also a deception; Jesse’s greatest weapon isn’t the one in her hand, it’s the one in her head. Control gives players access to a host of powerful psychic abilities that are as satisfying to use as they are to watch. So Jesse has the gun, but she doesn’t need the gun. Jesse is the gun.

Control is much better than its separate elements would lead you to believe. Even though combat can get somewhat old quickly and the story fell flat for me later on, I still never disliked playing Control at any point. It's yet another fun jaunt through a strange, offbeat world that Remedy has created. Control might not be my favorite game from the studio, but it continues to prove that there's a place for Remedy to continue making titles in the AAA space like this moving forward. If you have enjoyed past games from Remedy, you'll certainly find further enjoyment here...

But Control is so good that even when faced with such annoyances you just jump right back in. It’s like a Remedy greatest hits compilation, taking the best bits from all of the studio’s previous titles while adding a Metroidvania spin, and it really works. What’s even more impressive is that it feels fresh and unique. Thanks to the ever-changing and otherworldly nature of The Oldest House, Control has a varied range of environments that somehow feel cohesive. And while it has the usual mix of gunplay and powers, they combine to create combat that’s faster-paced and more frenetic than...

Remedy Entertainment is a studio with a storied history, so to say that they're at their absolute best here is no slight praise, and it's not praise that's easily given- but Control is just that good. Whether it's a story you're looking for, or engaging gameplay with mechanical depth, Control has more than enough up its sleeve to keep you rigorously engaged from start to finish.

Remedy returns with its strangest shooter yet.

After Quantum Break didn’t seem to do so hot as a Xbox One exclusive, development studio Remedy has returned to multiplatform with Control, another story-driven action game about paranormal phenomenon. Despite the pattern studio head Sam Lake seems to love following, he and his teams always find new ways to dress it up, and this time we’re looking at a sort of mashup, a blend of 60s-style government secrecy, interdimensional sci-fi, and uh, metroidvanias. While Control often gets in its own way with technical issues and weird map choices, it’s also a compelling romp through some creative lore that is...

Remedy always had a flair for the otherworldly, the supernatural, if you think about their portfolio of games. Even in Max Payne, their breakout title, they pioneered the slow-motion 'bullet time' effect in games modeled after the one seen in The Matrix movies. This allowed the titular character to effectively react to bullets while they were being fired, a superpower in its own right.

One of my favorite games on Xbox 360 was Remedy’s Alan Wake. It didn’t have the same gameplay and action as a Max Payne, but I was drawn into the character and the world almost immediately. Both the protagonist and myself trying to piece together the sci-fi mystery of the game. Admittedly, Quantum Break was not the next step I was hoping for, but its use of supernatural powers was a very fun mechanic and made it feel fresh.

It takes just a beat. I stop in my tracks and I look around the room. I know I’ve been here moments ago but the hallway I just walked through can’t have looped back like that. Wait, didn’t I exit through the door I just entered? Who was that janitor, was he even real? Was that lift always there? This all happens within minutes of starting Remedy Entertainment’s newest release, Control, and it sets the tone for the rest of your time in this reality bending romp through the FBC, the Fed...
