I’m distrustful of any follow-ups that reuse the original’s name. There’s an inherent mercenary quality to trading on an old title to try and lure in people who might recognize it and remember the good old days. In the age of undying media, when everything is recycled forever to keep an overwhelmed audience committed, sometimes even good work has to be mercenary. In calling its new game simply Samurai Shodown, SNK has made an honest declaration rather than a crass attempt to curry favor. This game is not a Samurai Shodown remake, nor is it truly a soft reboot. It...

Mortal Kombat 11 is an improvement on the Mortal Kombat formula in almost every way. The characters are fun to play, the graphics are amazingly detailed, and the sound design continues to be fantastic. The fatalities are the best the series has had. They’re all over-the-top and incredibly violent, but they’re not malicious. There’s a certain levity to them that makes the violence tolerable. The online netcode, lobbies, and other features are also very good. In addition, the story is a lot of goofy fun while also maintaining a certain level of seriousness that makes it a joy to play...

Mortal Kombat 11 maintains the franchise’s strong streak, turning in another fantastic fighting game. Although the current controversies with NetherRealm studios have sullied the studios’ reputation, the quality of their games in recent years cannot be denied. There were able to invent a narrative that is thoughtful and is full of stakes. Most of the characters have been fleshed out enough that you now care about them. We care about Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and the others after having spent so...

Starting its life back in 1992, a mere month before I was born, was the now infamous Mortal Kombat series. This is a franchise that has helped define fighting games as we now know them and it still stands strong as a pillar of the genre. 27 years later and we now get the release of Mortal Kombat 11. So how does it live up to such a legendary history?

Mortal Kombat 11 may catch some deserved flak for its microtransactions and Ronda Rousey's bland voice acting, but the core fighting is so entertaining than those issues will hardly to matter to most. Mortal Kombat 11 is simply full of things to do and will keep fighting game enthusiasts busy for quite some time. Future updates will hopefully continue to make progression more rewarding, but we've already seen enough of an improvement to wholeheartedly recommend Mortal Kombat 11 to both fans of the franchise and fighting game fans in general.

There is also downloadable content planned for the game, which only feels a little bit weird considering there are a number of characters you fight in the main story that aren't actually playable in the game. So, if they plan to sell us Cyrax or Sektor later, it feels just a bit shady to face fans to pay for them. Seriously, they have full move sets and everything.

It’s already been over four years since Mortal Kombat X turned up the gore factor for the fighting genre. Does the iconic brutal fighter still have some tricks up its sleeve, or has this world of microtransactions muddied things up too much? Read our Mortal Kombat 11 review as we see if NetherRealm’s latest has what it takes to keep fans coming back for more.

Those that can turn a blind eye to Mortal Kombat 11’s grind will have a good time turning their opponent into meaty bits. The core fighting engine powering this title isn’t drastically different compared to previous entries, but there’s no point in fixing what isn’t broken.

Mortal Kombat 11 serves up everything that you would expect from an MK game. Gore, broken bones, fatalities, brutalities, great combat, and a solid netcode. The Story Mode was entertaining for a bit but felt a bit cheesy. The Towers and The Krypt are things you could skip if you don’t care about cosmetics.

Nearly 30 years later, Mortal Kombat still deserves to hang in the top-tier of fighting games. With improved visuals, overhauled mechanics and exciting strategic potential, MK 11 offers a brilliant fighting experience. Unfortunately, the overall fun is bogged down with miserable modern-day business practices that frequently pump the brakes on your enjoyment. The Fight is the thing, however, and as long as the fists are flying, then Mortal Kombat 11 packs a helluva punch.

Mortal Kombat 11 is the best Mortal Kombat since MK2, a bold and bombastic entry that boasts a fighting model that finally matches the slapstick theatrics of gory Fatalities. It's further proof that MK, much like Street Fighter, has just as much relevance today as it did in the '90s thanks to the way its evolved while retaining its core identity. On Switch, it's a performance-first experience that nails 60fps, and boasts every mode and mechanic from other versions, only with a noticeable downgrade in the aesthetics department. The heavy-handed application of microtransactions makes customisation far less appealing than it...

In each new Mortal Kombat installment, we look on in horror as combatants are dismembered, mutilated, and devoured in disturbing and comedic ways. Even when their bodies are reduced to unrecognizable heaps of flesh and bone, most of these characters find ways to bounce back into fighting form for a sequel, making it seem like the war between realms will never end.

2015’s Mortal Kombat X signaled the beginning of an evolutionary turn for Netherrealm Studios’ storied fighting game series, featuring fresh new characters, a compelling story and the ability to select different fighting styles for every combatant. Mortal Kombat 11 continues this evolution, but not every aspect of the game is moving in the right direction.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or just looking for a story mode to grind, or even just interested in learning a little more about fighting games outside of simply mashing the buttons, there is something for everyone in Mortal Kombat 11 — or at least, everyone who can stomach the extreme violence and gore. These games have often been the safest buy for casual fighting game aficionados, and NetherRealm has knowingly played to its strengths while making smart, effective changes.

I got what I wanted from Mortal Kombat 11 - a great selection of characters, an impressive story mode, a pleasant combat system and bloody visuals. Unfortunately, I was also given a free grind that promoted grinding and a sometimes frustrating progression system.

Words can’t express how much I was looking forward to the full release of Mortal Kombat 11. At the risk of causing mass hysteria from all suburban moms from the early 90’s, I grew up loving these games ever since I was a little kid, playing Trilogy and Mortal Kombat 4 on my Nintendo 64 with my brother at the age of five. I was even a fan of the often criticized Mortal Kombat Armaggedon, as well as someone who’ll forever affirm that the first movie is one of the greatest and most enjoyab...

Mortal Kombat X was a landmark release in the long-running skull-crushing series, selling more than any previous entry and proving NetherRealm’s fighters could stand toe-to-toe with Street Fighter, Tekken and other competitors in terms of depth and polish. NetherRealm then upped their game another notch with the almost shockingly-good DC Comics brawler Injustice 2. Ed Boon and company have gone from the silly blood ‘n’ guts guys to arguably the leading fighting game developers on the scene.

Raiden has embraced the dark side, his humble white robes and beautiful blue lightning replaced with black armor and red bolts of vengeance. He will stop at nothing to protect Earthrealm from the forces of darkness, forces that his own hubris have created. Picking up immediately after the events of the previous game, the Revenant forms of Liu Kang and Kitana are building an army in the Netherrealm to invade Earthrealm. Raiden uses the power of Shinnok’s amulet to create a diversion while Sonya Blade, Cassie Cage, and Jacqui Briggs lead an all-out assault on Shinnok’s tower. Kronika, the weaver...

Mortal Kombat 11 is a nice send off to the 25+ year story of the series and it's NetherRealms best fighting game to date. It's just unfortunate that almost all of the single player content had to be filled with ridiculous amounts of grinding, RNG loot drops and unfair, unbalanced challenges.

It’s a rare fighting game that hits just about every note as strongly as Mortal Kombat 11 does. Everything from its methodical and deep combat to its fantastically absurd story mode and its rock-solid netcode, right down to its extraordinarily comprehensive tutorial is absolutely exceptional. It’s only when you get into its drawn-out progression that it trips up: the keys to unlocking Mortal Kombat 11’s rich vault of customization options are locked behind the frustratingly gimmicky and grindy barriers of the Krypt and Towers of Time. This series continues to prove that there’s real fighting depth beyond its notoriously gory...
