Rather than following gaming trends in search of profit, Capcom is beginning to create another of its own: high-quality, big-budget VR ports. After Resident Evil 7: Biohazard successfully translated Ethan Winters’ plight to save his wife into the world of virtual reality, the developer has done it again with the follow-up. While we feel some things could have been done better, Resident Evil Village in PSVR2 is even more intense than the flat-screen experience. It’s one of the launch games you need to play.

Capcom has created a luxurious VR experience for Resident Evil Village that grows in power the deeper you delve into it, It’s a tough one to get to grips with, but this is a shot in the arm for an already great survival horror adventure.

Reaching the credits, I sat back, exhausted and disappointed at where the series had ended up.

I got a story as confident as it is weird. I got a cast of characters with blistering charm. I got an experience that moved from the stuff of nightmares to the stuff of dreams — weird, haunting, and maybe a little deeper than I originally gave it credit for. I got a Resident Evil game. And it might be one of the best so far.

Resident Evil Village is the blowout-marketing success and eighth entry in the Resident evil series, and the follow up to the soft-reboot Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. You continue the journey of Ethan Winters, having taken the advice of Capcom colleague Guile, has gone home to become a family man alongside his wife Mia and daughter Rose.

Resident Evil is one of those franchises that is constantly changing and evolving over the years, constantly shifting between genres, and that’s part of the reason I love it. Every single game offers a new gameplay experience. It’s not afraid of mixing things up and breaking the rules, but it’s no lie it has struggled a lot. That was until the release of 2017’s Resident Evil 7, which softly rebooted the franchise and put it back on track. Now here we are with the 8th mainline title, R...

Resident Evil Village shines brightly as one of this year's early Game of the Year contenders. Whether you're a fan of the series or a survival horror fan in general, be sure to pick it up.

Resident Evil Village earns a spot right up there as one of the very best Resident Evil games in the franchise's 25 year run. Village is an amalgamation of what made Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7 fan-favourite entries. Though it also delivers on it's own ambition with new breeds of terrifying enemies never seen before in Resident Evil. The Village is a desolate, decrepit, dolorous setting but undeniably beautiful thanks to some of the best art direction ever seen in the series. In an age of day one patches and bugs, Resident Evil looks and runs flawlessly on...

To me though, the major difference is in execution. RE 4 is one of the greatest games ever but it is hard to argue that it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Whereas Village is short and beautiful, it continues the franchise’s story and leaves you with answers to questions you never knew you had. By far there are some stupidly absurd parts to this game, but it’s all explained and executed well. Resident Evil Village feels like a natural conclusion to RE7 - its dramatic beats and tender moments are blended with all that horror you’d expect while staying grounded. It...

Resident Evil Village is a great game that embraces the elements of the series that we know and love while also carving out its own space nestled deep in dark fantasy. In fact, this game beautifully finds a middle ground to please existing fans of the franchise but also serves as a great entry point for new players.

Resident Evil Village is a far cry from its more grounded and horror-focused predecessor, but in the end, it’s perhaps just as lovable. At times it feels like a greatest hits collection of some of the best elements of previous Resident Evil games, and while that leads to it not being wholly coherent, it’s not to its detriment. It may not be perfect in terms of combat mechanics and storytelling, but Resident Evil Village keeps you on your toes, with you never truly knowing what’s waiting for you around the next corner. And that’s why when playing it, the hours...

Resident Evil Village is an expertly-crafted narrative that seamlessly weaves subtle horror into action-driven sequences and backs it up with an excellent story supported by even better characters. An exemplary merit that Capcom still hasn’t lost its creative spark

Resident Evil Village is a great survival horror game that leans into the action and silliness of earlier entries in the series to mixed results. It's not as good as Resident Evil 7, and it's not as good as Resident Evil 4. It feels like a strange mixture of the two, and while it seems like it might be able to strike a good balance in its first half, the second half dashes any hope of that.

Resident Evil Village pulls the best bits from the series' past and recombines them into something fresh and surprising. It can’t maintain that momentum for its entire run, but Village’s heights are among the best in Resident Evil's illustrious history.

Resident Evil Village doesn't have the most engrossing or satisfying story in Resident Evil history, and its more action-oriented approach is likely to disappoint fans that enjoyed RE7's pure horror. However, Resident Evil Village is packed with replay value, rarely has a dull moment, and should leave Resident Evil fans excited for the franchise's future.

The Resident Evil series took an interesting turn with Resident Evil 7, moving the renowned survival horror franchise into a first-person perspective. For me, this risky move paid off. It provided players with a front seat to the horror show, resulting in a terrific ride… despite going off the rails in its third act.

Resident Evil Village is the tenth mainline game in the series and the second to use a first-person perspective. The game continues the twisted story of Ethan Winters, following the events of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Two demos showcasing the elaborate Castle Dimitrescu and the torn Village area have teased the intense survival horror players will face once again, but what they don’t show is the range of this explosive sequel. A spectacle that not everyone may want.

It jumps between gameplay styles more than I expected and doesn't scratch the same itch as its predecessor, but this is a damn good game that every fan of the series needs to play.

Are you brave enough to discover what lies waiting beyond the village? The frights and chills are so worth it, as the next entry in the famed series puts together satisfying mechanics and enthralling, scary story.

Resident Evil Village is a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7, and as such, it has big shoes to fill. After the bestselling but poorly received Resident Evil 6 (and some terrible spin-offs), Resident Evil found itself in a rut. Fortunately, Resident Evil 7 tapped into the franchise’s roots and combined classic survival horror with modern gameplay to revitalize the series.

Resident Evil Village is a good — but not exceptional — middle ground between the action-oriented RE4 and the horror thrills of RE7. While the game has some pacing issues and the campaign seems a bit shorter than previous entries, Village offers plenty of reasons to play through multiple times. It doesn’t quite live up to the sum of its parts, but it’s a satisfying survival horror romp that won’t disappoint fans of the series. 7/10.

Resident Evil 7 was a major gamble, introducing a bold new setting, mechanics, and concepts to Capcom’s then-flagging horror franchise, and thankfully, the big bet paid off. Since then, Capcom has largely been coasting on the momentum RE7 provided them with a series of well-made but not-terribly-risky remakes. Well, the time for playing it safe is officially over, as Capcom delivers its true follow-up to RE7 this week! Prepare yourself for Resident Evil Village.

Resident Evil Village may not quite live up to the highs of its terrifying predecessor but it's a still a solid entry in the long-running series that's well worth checking out. Eastern Europe makes for a fantastically atmospheric and surprisingly open setting here, it's chock full of delightfully oddball characters and features a handful of properly entertaining set-pieces to blast through. There may well be a few rough edges, with a rather painful protagonist and some duff boss battles to contend with but, overall, this is one truly messed up village that's well worth a visit.

The Resident Evil series has gone from a spooky zombie game, to mutated monsters, to crazed villagers and more. It seems like the team at Capcom is constantly trying to find new things that the series’ assorted viruses and molds and whatever other bio-enhancements can mutate into. Resident Evil Village is a foray into monster movie classics. The creatures you’ll encounter here are the savage and agile lycans, vampire-like maidens, and even some that meld flesh and metal in a rather Frankenstein-like way. While it’s another bold new direction for the series, Village is also home to plenty of classic...

Resident Evil Village is a great entry into the otherwise weird third trilogy of the Resident Evil franchise. Taking a lot of what made Resident Evil 7 work as a great horror experience and adding to it with things that people enjoyed about Resident Evil 4. However, Resident Evil Village does feel like by adding things from Resident Evil 4, that CAPCOM is about to remake some mistakes of old.

Resident Evil Village presents me with a conundrum I’ve felt all too often throughout certain eras of the franchise (particularly RE4): If I have the means to kill everything in my way at all times, why should I be scared? There are times it adequately answers this question and times where it does not. But that’s an ongoing issue with the balance of power in a supposed horror game. Perhaps more notably, I feel Resident Evil Village does great as an action game with solid horror elements. The combat is visceral and vibrant, the environments are splendid and mysterious, and...

Taken alone, any one slice of the game - like a single house, the village itself, even the way combat handles - has its issues. But combined, it merges into something that’s still special - even if it isn’t quite as brilliant as Resident Evil 7 or 2 Remake. It’s an easy recommendation - though if you didn't back in 2017, you might want to play RE7 first.

Roaming the streets of Resident Evil Village is like visiting a disturbing and deadly Disneyland, where every attraction is a house of horrors. I got just as big a thrill out of revelling in its frenzied violence as I did retracing my steps through the gradually revealed recesses of its sizable village setting to uncover the darkest story secrets of its monstrous main cast. Boss fights are a bit of a letdown but the great variety of enemies throughout keeps things tense, especially on Hardcore mode. The fact that it's very much a throwback to the fast-paced action of Resident...
