After having sliced its way through Japan and Final Fantasy, Team Ninja heads to China with its newest action RPG. Does the change in setting bring about other changes or more like a new coat of paint?
Read Full ReviewWhen it comes to punishingly difficult but satisfying action combat, few do it as well as the Dark Souls series – and open world spiritual successor Elden Ring has raised the bar even higher. 2017’s Nioh came pretty darn close, and its follow-up Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty smartly builds on those foundations.

A disappointing follow-up to Nioh, that has most of its same qualities but, unfortunately, almost exactly the same flaws; with too few new ideas to make up for the lack of advancement.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty pushes the boundaries of a Souls-like game by introducing refreshing and unique takes on otherwise overused formulas. The emphasis on deflecting and the new morale mechanic makes for a challenging and rewarding combat system only to be further enhanced by the dramatic backdrop of the Three Kingdoms.

Much like Nioh, Wo Long is beautiful and intricate and offers a punishing combat system to satisfy your masochistic desires if you have a thing for Souslike games.

If you’re new to Soulslikes, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty might be the most fun and accessible one yet thanks to a number of features it implements.

Overall, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a great entry point to the Soulslike genre for those who found some of FromSoftware’s offerings unapproachable. While it’s not going to be winning any GOTY awards, there is still plenty of fun to be had in the challenging boss fights and unique layouts of each level. If anything though, this will likely just make fans of the genre want to go back and play an entry that does it better.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is one of my top 3 souls-like games and shines with its combat and setting, and if you are willing to compromise and deal with some initial issues, the game can be played on the Steam Deck.

I’ve been playing a lot of Soulslikes of late; in fact, I was bouncing between the sci-fi Scars Above at the same time I was engaging with Team Ninja’s latest, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty. While the former proved to be an ill fit for a genre that FromSoftware has made infamous, Team Ninja continues to carve its own niche into a genre that continues to grow in popularity.

The best way to describe how Wo Long feels is if you combined the visuals and swordplay of the Dynasty Warriors and Nioh games with a pinch of Sekiro. What then happens is that you have a game that is quite difficult, but oh-so-rewarding when you conquer the seemingly impossible.

It’s impossible to overstate the influence FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series has had on the video game industry, something that’s once again made clear with the arrival of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. The new action RPG joins a long list of “Soulslikes” that emulate FromSoftware’s punishing, yet satisfying difficulty while putting their own spin on the formula. Want a Soulslike game set in a sci-fi universe? Play The Surge. Do you like anime? Code Vein is the game for you. Ever wanted to put Pinocchio in the world of Bloodborne? Weird, but Lies of P is for you.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dark fantasy take on the Three Kingdoms. The difficulty is high, almost seeming insurmountable at first, but part of what makes Wo Long great is how the difficulty isn't unfair. The gameplay is structured where players are rewarded for learning the fighting style of their enemies and using their mastery of their own skills against them. It can be frustrating and requires patience to master, but it's such a great feeling to finally overcome a strong adversary. Challenge alone does not make a game great, but Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty excels in every area...

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a top-notch time-efficient action RPG with exhilarating combat and vibrant cinematic sequences, both of which are a step up from the studio's past titles. However, forgettable boss battles and lackluster loot leave much to desire, preventing this from being Team Ninja's finest.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a highlight reel of other Souls-likes, never managing to carve out its own identity.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a solid soulslike experience that serves up top-notch combat in a hugely atmospheric setting which incorporates real-life historical events, Chinese mythology and dark fantasy elements. There's a clever battle system at the heart of proceedings here with deflections, ripostes and screen-shaking fatal attacks the order of the day, whilst an innovative morale rank and recruitment system makes for action that's flexible enough to cater for newcomers to the genre. The narrative isn't particularly cohesive, and a handful of the missions on offer are a little too short for their own good, but overall this is...

At the end of the day, I absolutely enjoyed my time in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and am raring to go back for more with an additional unlockable difficulty level that has more powerful loot and difficult fights awaiting. The blend of combat, RPG elements, platforming, and a much more serious and interesting narrative makes for an engaging romp through the ancient lands of China, and aside from some small AI hiccups and design choices, there really isn't much there to dampen my revitalized love for all things Romance of the Three Kingdoms. All hail the newest and most polished...

As great as Team Ninja’s tidal, back-and-forth take on the Souls-like formula is, some small regressions keep it from landing a killer blow.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is an engrossing, dense, and hard-fought slog, but nevertheless a slog weighed down by some heavy recycling and inconsistent difficulty.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a wild combination of Nioh and Sekiro, two games that overwhelmed me with their level of difficulty. So I would never have expected that it would be such an easy run for me - satisfying, but monotonous.

Team Ninja’s latest action RPG is equal parts challenging and exhilarating, with unique mechanics that help even the odds in even the toughest of battles. A perfect new addition to a genre already stacked with quality titles.

Wo Long sees Team Ninja build on the core quality of the Nioh games. Its new systems, from the spirit gauge to morale levels within each stage feel well-considered and tightly honed to encourage exploration and bold, expressive fighting styles. Some old habits die hard, especially the tiresome loot gathering, but the game's core combat and traversal options always shine through.

I want to stress that Wo Long is not going to be for everyone. It can be extremely punishing, especially if you’re butting heads with the parry system. But the setting, the aesthetics, and action sensibilities from a learned team made it all worth it to push through and get over that hump. I hope Koei Tecmo has another one of these up their sleeve.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a fantastic spin-off of the Nioh series. While it feels like Team Ninja had a checklist of features to borrow from other games, in the end, everything feels fresh and exciting. Despite the performance issues and the occasional annoyance of AI-controlled players, I found myself immersed in the game for hours. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty transcends being just a Soulslike or an action game; it’s a genuinely fun and enjoyable experience. Now, can we get a sequel, please

I have never died so many times, and still been excited to jump back in and die again. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty may be my first completed soulslike, but it won’t be my last. If your game can launch someone into a new genre they used to avoid, it’s safe to say you’ve done something extraordinary—and Team Ninja has.

While it succeeds in its own right, Wo Long doesn't quite reach the same heights as Team Ninja's Nioh 1 and 2.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is an epic ass-kicking time. Featuring ridiculously cool characters, stunning music, and a deeply engaging combat system this one is an easy recommendation for purchase or downloading on Game Pass like. Team NINJA and KOEI TECMO have a winner on their hands with this new franchise, and I can’t wait to see more of it in the future.

It's been some time since the Japanese studio Team NINJA released a pure action game in the vein of modern Ninja Gaiden, as titles like the two entries in the Nioh series and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin combine the excellent action gameplay the studio is known for with role-playing game mechanics and challenging experiences inspired by FromSoftware's Souls series. The developer, however, did not forget their classic games and has now returned to a slightly more straightforward action game formula with Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, another solid game that fans of the studio will thoroughly enjoy, despite some...

Team Ninja return with Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, another highly challenging masocore game. The fast-paced, gruelling action game demands skill, strategy and mastery of many gameplay mechanics. Taking elements of their successful Nioh franchise, this experience is one for determined audiences.

All complaining aside, what ultimately makes a game great is whether it's fun, and I have to admit that, despite my frustrations, I'm not ready to give up. No matter how disappointed I am with the game and myself after each "Crushing Defeat," I find myself wanting to go back and play again, even if it's just to build up relationships with Liu Bei and Sun Jian, unlock their armor sets and weapons, grind for levels and new spells and, maybe some day, finally get to use that wizard's house key. It doesn't excuse the faults, and I will die...

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty shares some elements with Team Ninja’s Nioh games, such as randomised loot and challenging combat, but ultimately it feels very much like its own game. It’s faster-paced, has a unique morale system, and pushes players to deflect enemy attacks in order to succeed. What lets it down ever so slightly is that some of these new features often feel poorly explained and a little underdeveloped. Otherwise, this is fresh take on the Soulslike formula.

Team Ninja has streamlined Nioh with dashes of Sekiro, but it stands on its own as a Soulslike with, arguably, the crispest combat out there.

Wo Long is still an entertaining game to play through. Its combat is solid, making it closer to Sekiro, Ninja Gaiden, and even Onimusha, though I do feel some things could have been fleshed out more. Souls and Nioh fans will no doubt be right at home with this, as it certainly scratches that Soul itch, and for that, I do recommend you play the game at some point.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty differentiates itself from Nioh thanks to a few key mechanics, though the experience can feel a little linear and easy at times. Still a fun game for fans of Team Ninja, and faster Soulslikes in general.

A notable drop in depth compared to the Nioh games, Wo-Long still has some engaging additions inspired by Sekiro. I often enjoyed myself, but repetition and a horribly uneven difficulty curve certainly don't help.

A lot of companies have tried to jump into the soulslike (I’m not going to call it “masocore”, give up) bandwagon, but very few have managed to carve a niche of their own, making their games feel like an extension to the genre, and not just some average Dark Souls carbon copy. Out of those, Team Ninja might be the one achieving the best results. Their Nioh games were clearly inspired by Dark Souls, but they had their own level structure, hoarding system, and overall gameplay feel that m...
